Hi mommies! I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue. My 2 year old son keeps getting this rash around his mouth and chin that just doesn't seem to want to stay gone. I took him to his pediatrician and she prescribed some cortisone cream which helps, but it never stays cleared up for more than a couple days. She said it's pretty normal for kids to get rashes like this, but I just wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar experience and a treatment that may work better. The rash doesn't bother him, and it's not that bad, but I feel like it should clear up completely at some point ya know? Thanks for your input.

What can I do next?

My 22 month old son has the same issue and it is not teething, drooling etc. It is a red dot spotted rash all over his face at time but mostly around his mouth and chin. We were referred for food allergy testing(results will be back on the 22) but our pedi said food allergies in children this young are NOT usually on the face. We have also done extensive blood work to look for other signs. An over population of yeast can cause this too along with many other internal issues. Hopefully we can get the bottom of it because I am with you, it should clear up!

There are two things that come to mind on this, but I'm not a doctor, so it's still just opinion. First, does he bite his lips or suck on his lips at all? Does that even make sense? I have a nephew who was always chapped around his lips because of that.

After having my son, I got a rash that started at the bottom corner of my mouth and worked its way all the way around. From my nose all the way around to my chin was a flaky rash. It's called perioral dermatitis and flares up with products containing SLS (anything that lathers ~ face wash, bubble bath, body wash, toothpaste. . .. even my foundation has it). I had to start using all natural products that don't contain that ingredient. The doctor prescribed a crazy amount of antibiotic, but I got rid of it in two days of using my much less expensive natural products. Be careful, though, because some companies say they're natural, but I'm still finding that ingredient, so just be cautious. I don't want to "advertise" so if you would like to know more about what I used, just PM me, and I'll let you know. I was so sold on it, that it became my business, so I can also send you a sample of the baby line to see if it helps clear things up. Also, if you use bubble baths, cut those out and see if it helps some as well. Good luck!

Have you considered that it might be a food allergy? Allergies can give very different symptoms to different people. Does it seem to get worse when he eats a particular food, or at different times of the day? You might want to take your son to an allergist (and yes, they can start testing for allergies at his age). Hope he gets better soon!

Could it be a drool rash? My son gets them a lot. It is usually, but not always, correlated to teething. He may be a night time drooler which would cause the rash. You may not notice the drool during the day. If it is this, it will not harm him in any way and there isn't much you can do. Get some super absorbent sheets for his bed or if you can place a towel under his head when he sleeps. This will help catch and absorb any drool and keep it away from his face. (Unfortunately, I can't do that because my son is such a wiggler!) And yes, we were also told to use hydrocortisone or even just some diaper rash ointment or plain vaseline to create a moisture barrier where the rash appears. Good luck.

Hi J.,
Well my son did this for a long time too. I could not get rid of it and it seemed to move around on his chin area and sometimes on the side of his mouth. My doctor prescribed both cortisone cream and then a anti fungal but nothing worked. He was a very slow teether so I couldn't really tell if it had anything to do with it or not.It seemed to get worse after he was outside in the cool air. I tried ALOT of different creams/lotions but the only thing that seemed to help was a product that I ordered through Walgreens pharmacy called Resinol ointment used for rashes and skin protection. The poor guy seemed to have this stuff on his face most of the time until the rash just vanished as quick as it came on. It's also a GREAT product for diaper rash and for the whole family!
Hope this helps,
C.
