Our son continues to be sick with cough and runny nose. We don't know if its just the crazy weather, daycare or something else. He is only seven months has been on numerous antibiotics, already had ear tubes placed and still continues to be sick. Does anyone else have this problem with their child.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hey Mama's,

Thank you sooo much for all of your advice and ideas. I will take then all into consideration and hopefully in the end help my son feel better. I had never really thought of him having allergies. I thought he was too young, but I guess he really is not. Thank you all once again.

I had this problem with my son, now 2 and he simply outgrew it. We went to the ENT many times that first 18 months. Hang in there!

it sounds like he may have allergies and possible asthma, maybe antibiotics aren't what he needs but antihistamines, and a reduction of his irritants such as carpet and animals. my nephew went through the same thing, and once he turned one they put him on a daily allergy medicine and he has been great now.

It sounds just like my son. In fact, at 17 mo. we are still dealing with it, and have to go back to an ENT tomorrow, for possilby another surgery! We are on allergy meds., inhalers, and have been through numberous antibiotics too. Good luck and let me know if you find a cure.

Is it a dry cough?

My daughter had a cough like this that started about this same age and she had wheezing. She also had a runny nose. We went to numerous doctors, tried everything like you, even experimental medicines. We had her tested for allergies (we had to beg a doctor because she was so young, they won't normally do it) and she was allergic to everything under the sun. Finally, we found a doctor that diagnosed it as "reactive airway syndrome", which is when they are highly allergic and so the little sacs in their lungs stick together. Their mucus is very thick and gummy. We got a nebulizer with albuterol to use in it and it worked. We had to use it at first, every two to four hours until she was about a year old and then it went to twice a day until she was three. The daycare wouldn't do it and so we just had to do it in the morning and at night. By the time she was three, it became less frequent and by five, most of it disappeared. She is 13 now once a year has the same cough. I guess she has outgrown most of the allergies to food, but maybe not to certain season allergies. We still have to pull out the old nebulizer occasionally, but now she is healthy and fine. I don't know if this is the problem with your baby, but it would be a good idea to ask your pediatrition. I remember that they had a nebulizer right there in the office that they tried on her the first time and we were able to see results immediately. By the way, she also had ear tubes and a procedure where they went into her nasal passages and scraped out the gunk. With the RAS, something that goes along with it is the very thick mucus that simply could not be cleared on its own. The procedure and nebulizing helped her a great deal - I feel that it probably saved damage to her lungs.

Good luck,
M.

Hi E.,

This sounds just like my son. I would look into if your son has allergies and also see if getting his adnodes taken out is an option. My son has allergies and his nose was constantly green for the first 3 years of his life, then we had the tubes put in along with his adnodes removed and he is a different child now.

Best of luck!

Hi E.,

Sorry your son is continually sick! Mine is too. He's 3 months old and he is mostly likely catching his colds from his 2 year old sister. It's very frustrating! He sounds so horrible, his breathing is so raspy and the coughs sound almost like he's choking. He hasn't had a fever with it, so I guess we just wait it out. We try sucking out his nose but nothing ever comes out. He's so congested but somehow seems to sleep just fine throughout the night. My daughter started back at daycare the week before Christmas when she caught her cold. And since the 31st, they've both been in daycare. He's on an antibiotic now but not sure what it's called.

I think the cold is a combination of the weather and daycare. Our Pedi said this has been one of the worst seasons for colds.

We went through this - and continue too - on a much smaller scale now! He saw a specialist and now he takes "vitamins" which is actually chewable Singular. It helps - but God help us if the wind decides to blow hard one day!!!!! Good Luck. I also agree with Michelle and work with her - it really has made a difference in our house!

My boys had something similar but their symptoms were skin & breathing related. They had terrible eczema & asthma. We didn't know what in the heck was causing their symptoms. They had been on antibiotics, steroid creams (several different prescriptions, been tested for allergies, etc. They didn't get any relief until we switched over our cleaning, laundry, bath & body products to ones w/o formaldehyde, chlorine bleach, ammonia, & phosphates. Now they are so much better! I would really recommend looking into this as a possible cause. :)

I read that a vaporizer may help...not sure for infant, but did help my toddler. It keeps her room moist and we added the vaporsteam stuff and it cleared her chest. Now she is fine, with no medications. WE have always used a humidifier, but seems the vaporizer works better.

So many children are allergic to formaldehyde and bleach. A chronically ill baby/toddler is a sign(especially ear problems) I am a parent educator and help parents learn about removing household triggers and toxins which will strenthen a child's immune systems and prevent allergies and asthma etc.

I am very sorry to hear he is sick. You may really benefit from this type of approach to wellness. Unfortunately doctors treat the symptoms and never really look for the underlying causes of so many childhood conditions. Good luck to you, M.

My son is the same age and has been the same way. We recently saw a pediatric pulmonologist (he also aspirated meconium and had some lung problems at birth). He's now treating my son for asthma and reflux. He said asthma in young babies often doesn't show up as the typical wheezing and instead is evidenced by a lingering cough (totally what my son has).

In addition, there is a link between asthma and reflux. I never thought of my son as having reflux (he spits up but not excessively), but the dr. said often babies try to produce mucus to offset the stomach acid from reflux. There's no way for the baby to tell its body to just produce mucus in his stomach, so the baby's body produces excess mucus everywhere ... hence the runny nose (and congestion from time to time in our son's case).

My son is now on an inhaler and two reflux meds. It's too early to see any improvement (he's only been on them a few days), but I wanted to pass along our situation to see if it sounded like yours and may want to be something you discuss with your pedi.

In my son's case the cough and runny nose is because he's sick but not because of a cold. Your son could be the same way and maybe that's why the treatment he's had to date isn't working. It may not be treating the right cause of the problem. Good luck! :)
