Colonoscopy : (

I am going to have a colonoscopy in May. May baby will be 3 months old then. The doctor recommended not nursing for 24 hours after the procedure since he will be giving me a seditive. My question is 1) Is that long enough? 2) Do I need not to nurse before hand when I have to take the laxative? I have to start the laxative at 7PM the night before the procedure, so I would only have one nursing in the middle of the night and one first thing in the morning before I have to leave. My baby doesn't take bottles all that well, but will if she is really hungry. I am just worried b/c of the procedure itself, and then if she will eat that next 24 hours, and if she will go back to nursing the next day? Does anyone have any advice for me???

What can I do next?

You can pump and freeze your breast milk to prepare for the time it takes for you to have this procedure and cover the feedings. I would be cautious on the laxative and ask your local pharmacists if this will impact your milk. They are very informative on such matters. Definitely wait on the post op time. I had a treatment while nursing and 24 hrs was enough time for the drug they used on me. You can ask the Dr what sedative he will be giving you and ask the Pharmacists too. I've had a colonoscopy too and it was a much needed test that isn't bad and much relief comes from the results. Hope all goes well with you and yours.

colonoscopy will be a breeze compared to the anxiety of the hungry baby. you will not remember a thing from the colonoscopy. YEAH!!
I would call the pediatrician and ask about the meds. pump and freeze some breast milk and offer a bottle. after all you don't want the baby to get diarrhea, or be sedated. she won't suffer from a day with out eating well.
now you might suffer with her not eating well for a day. but she won't. if she is hungry enough then she will take the bottle.
good luck,
L.

Hi S.:
I don't know about nursing the baby before or after but, to make you drink easier the "cocktail", drink it when its cold, it will go easier, my husband had a colonoscopy in September and he said it wasn't that bad. He was asleep when he had it.
Don't worry, the procedure is quick, and you won't feel anything.

I feel for you! I just had a colonoscopy a few weeks ago. I had a hard time drinking the "cocktail". I had to chug as much as I could then I sucked on a lemon wedge to get the taste out of my mouth. Remember you are basically forcing your body to have diarrhea for a day, so drink as much water as you can to ensure you don't dry up. I would call your pediatrician to see if you should nurse at all. I don't think that stuff will pass through your milk, but I'm no doctor.

I'm not nursing anymore but I did get really sick with meningitis when my oldest was still nursing. He was the same way with not taking a bottle. I couldn't nurse for a few days because of the pain meds. He wasn't happy with the bottle but we discovered he took one better from someone other than me. I didn't have much breast milk frozen so we had to give him formula for the first time too. He probably lost a some weight during the ordeal but he came through it just fine. And he went back to the breast with a vengeance. Of corse I had been "pumping and dumping", and if my production slowed down at all I didn't notice.

Good luck, the prep really is the hard part to that procedure. For the procedure itself all you do is take a nap!
