Colic Baby Help Please!

Hey mamas!
My good friend has a 9 wk old son with really bad colic. He was born 5 wks early but didn't have any problems and has caught up in weight. He seems to have bad gas and reflux which makes things worse. She's been nursing and giving him formula to keep his weight on.

I feel so sorry for her because he wakes up sometimes every hour at night and cries all the time. I can't give much advice because my daughter never had these issues. She's tried gripe water, Highland's colic tablets, he's on reflux medicine, and she recently got colic calm which does help some, too. He's not too much into paci's but like his thumb so she's thrown her hands up and let him suck that since it calms him.

I was wondering if anyone had any other tricks or advice I can give her about him? Other than the colic he's perfect. Any suggestions would be great!! Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Just a thought... what about eliminating dairy and soy from HER diet and if she is still needs to supplement with formula switch to a hypoallergenic one.
I have a 3 month old and we were going through something similar but we also had some suspect diapers that tipped us off on the dairy sensitivity. It's so hard seeing our children in pain and we want nothing more than to bring them some comfort. It might be worth a try just to see if it will bring them both some relief.
Someone also mentioned white noise that is very helpful too!!!
Sending ((hugs))

I had 2 daughters who both had colic at 3 months. It's very difficult and sometimes there isn't much you can do. I breastfed them both and was eating right. Has she discussed it with her doctor? Every child is different. Mine didn't have any problems sleeping at night. Maybe he has a milk sensitivity? I found what works during the crying fussiness is we bought a Baby Bjorn carrier and she loved it when we put her in that and walked around. Wish I had it for my first daughter.

Have you tried a different formula? We went through 5 formulas prior to finding one that worked for our baby girl. We finally ended on Similac Sensitive which is lactose free.

Hi - my name is A. and I had some of the same issues. My son had low blood sugar when he was born so they gave him formula. I nursed him and gave him formula. The doctor said the combination of the 2 could cause very bad gas for the baby. I stopped the formula and just nursed, but I had to remove everything gassy from my diet, broccoli, milk, chocolate (all the good food groups). I can honestly tell you I never ate healthier, all organic and lots of cammomile tea. Additionally, I jused the baby Bjorn and whenever he got fussy (after meals) I would put him inside that and walk him. It all worked and he started sleeping longer and giving me time to breath. Oh, yeah lots of prayers. I even had his pediatrician praying for us.

Good luck to your friend.

A.

Does she elevate the head of his bed a little? It should help some at least. I feel her pain. My last one was colicky and a bad sleeper, too.

I definitely relate to your friend, having two extremely colicky babies myself. I remember reading The Fussy Baby Book by Dr. and Mrs. Sears (who refer to these as "high-need babies"). There were a lot of great tips in there. We bounced with our babies a lot on an exercise ball- it was one of the only things that calmed them down enough to fall asleep. With both babies, I cut out dairy, and anything that could cause gas- broccoli, spicy foods, etc. I ate very bland. They also both needed white noise to sleep, and swaddling was key. High-need/colicky babies flail their arms more than a typical baby due to an underdeveloped nervous system, so being wrapped up tight with arms pinned down helps to soothe them and keep baby asleep longer. Since he likes to suck his thumb, she'll have to wrap him with one arm partially out so he can get his thumb- she should still wrap his arm just with his elbow bent, so his hand rests near his mouth.
My daughter outgrew the colic at 6 months, my son at 7 months- which is longer than the typical colicky baby. Best of luck to your friend. Tell her not to be afraid to lay baby down and walk away for a few minutes to breathe and regroup. It can be very frustrating when your baby cries all the time.

Have her check the library for the video & book "Happiest Baby on the Block" by Dr. Karp. Very interesting stuff, and offers techniques to help the baby be comforted. Sucking is totally normal and she shouldn't worry about that - it's a primary comfort mechanism for babies.

Hi J.,

Has your friend taken him to the dr? There are things dr's can prescribe to help. The formula could be a contributor. Our saving grace was the fan motor on our cooktop. The white noise was soothing. Swaddling can help if he is startling himself from his arms/legs moving.

I hope you find the answer you are needing. Colic is rough on everyone.

Some things you eat like beans can give your baby gas also, and if they are out in the wind at this age and their face not covered up they get colic. Lay him across her lap on his tummy and pat him, the warm of her on his tummy helps along with the patting. I really noticed the wind and what I ate with mine.
On one of my children that hadn't had colic I thought he had it all night one night and come tofind out he had an ear infection when I took him to Dr.He would cry like he was hungry, and when I tried to feed him he would only nurse for a bit and cry again, but it sure seemed like colic, but guess it was ear and throat. Hers does sound more like colic though.

My 2nd son had reflux. I am sorry that they are going through this. It's really hard. I would suggest bugging the doctor until a medicine that works can be found. We ended up using liquid Zantac that worked. It took him some time to get used to of the strong peppermint favor. I used some Cherry flavored Supreme Mylanta in small dosages between med times to help. It doesn't contain aluminum. Also keeping him in a almost upright position can help. Sometimes sitting up to much like in a car seat can make it worse. I used something called a Tucker Sling in his crib that helped him so much to get some sleep. I found a used one on Craigs list.
Bottom line you have to get aggressive with the doctors sometimes to get them to help. My doctor really didn't seem too concerned because he was still gaining weight but he didn't see or hear him cry all day and night either. After alot of sleep loss I didn't care who I offended anymore and put my foot down and got some help.
My son also enjoyed his fingers for sucking but I would really recommend trying to get him to use a paci instead. Later on you can take a paci away but not a finger. ")
Best Regards,
C.

Refer your friend to the book "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Harvey Karp. It includes the 5 S method - swaddle, swinging, shushing, sucking (pacifier) and putting the baby on the side or stomach. Works wonders! And, I highly recommend white noise - hair dryer, vacuum, dryer or a $20 noisemaker with heartbeat, rain, etc.

Good luck!

My daughter had really bad reflux issues and I've had friends with colic babies. Here are my recommendations:

-even though they say wait 30 min before putting the babies on their bellys...WAIT as long as possible! She was very good about lifting her head up and stuff so I didn't give her a lot of tummy time. That really seemed to help the reflux/fussiness. I even let her sleep in a swing or just propped up so she wasn't laying down. Look at reflux like heart burn-where it bubbles back up and causes discomfort when you're laying down.

-I've heard Dr. Browns bottles are the best for reflux/colic.

-Try a warm tummy wrap. You can get them off of http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/search.jsp?N=0&Nt...

Hope this helps.

I know people that have given original limu for their babies for all kinds of things. It works great with reflux and might be what the baby needs. You just put some in a dropper and give it to him.
My website is: www.discoverlimu.com/jcarden and I have some testimonials from people who have given the Limu to their babies and how well they did with it.
It is a vegetable from the sea in a liquid form, not a medicine. The main ingredient called fucoidan has been tested in over 780 independent researches and works with your immune system to help your body fight things off.
Please give your friend the info and tell her to call me with any questions.

My pediatrician told me I could have taken my daughter to a chiropractor for her reflux....of course this is after the fact, but I have heard that for colic too. Apparently something is off and once they are 'adjusted' things clear up! Maybe some has experience with this to verify.....I know I would have tried it had I known.

You've gotten a lot of good advice already, but here are a few I didn't see. I learned about these with my dd (now 3) who was born 2 mo early. The I was getting up every hour too, sleeping on the couch with her on my chest...so on. The dr's kept saying it was colic or reflex (tried meds) and eventually they sent us to chirldrens med. for a swollow exam. Turns out that there was a muscle in here throat that didn't close right when she swollowed so we had to thiken her milk. It calmed her down. (one of the signs is projectil viomiting after/during feedings).
For reflux I've heard the Tuckers Swing work very well, though I don't think it is cheap. I used baby swing a lot with both kids.
I hope things get better for you soon.

Colic is so tricky. I think babies usually don't cry unless something is wrong (tired, in pain, overstimulated, etc.) and if a baby is crying ALL THE TIME then it is usually pain. I read an AWESOME book called "colic solved" by Dr. Bryan Vartebedian. It answered a million of my questions and is a great resource for me. I hope it helps you.

I would try a chiropractor. We have a great one, Dr. Merideth in Grapevine. Her office is called Hands On Health. Also, cutting out all dairy, (and make sure you read all labels) might help! Good luck to your friend!

Hi J., To settle the baby with colic tell your friend to get some herbal catnip or peppermint tea as any herbal mint tea will help settle the baby with colic. Put a few leaves in a cup and let it stand for a while and strain it and put about an ounce of tea in a bottle and add cooled boiled water to this about an ounce and put in a little honey to sweeten it and let the baby suck this and it will help bring up the wind and settle the baby. The tea doesn't need to be strong just fairly weak also get her to check the formula she is using as a supplement to make sure it doesn't have any extra things added to it such as extra iron or other things like this as some babies can't take these extra supplements. Tell her to drink plenty of water and eat plenty of salad vegies and get some alfa sprouts and use these as well as they will help enrich her own milk and help satisfy the baby. Only drink decaff coffee and don't drink any soft drinks as they have a lot of caffenine in them. Drink lots of water and eat a lot of whole grains such as oats, corn, beans, and eat lots of spinach as these help with milk production and she can use alfa sprouts on a sandwich made of wholegrain bread and if she will put molases on the bead for a snack it will help her drink more water. I wish you all the best. Ed

you might try looking into a type of allergy...i had a friend who the dr. said her baby had colic for 5 months! the baby cried so much, and the drs. all said "just colicky".....she switched peds, and they immediately did some testing, and found out he was allergic to milk and soy...(also had some swallowing issues)...put him on a thickened special formula, and he was a totally different baby after a weekend!
she could also try a different reflux medicine...all 3 of my boys had bad reflux, and one time they gave me a medicine that wasn't working so we switched back...so some meds may work better than others for different kids...

Try a little rice cereal. A doctor may say she's too young, but older mammas (my mom!) told me to try it on my colicky son at that age and it really helped. It helps weigh down the formula. My son was 3.5 weeks premature and the flap at the base of his throat wasn't quite strong enough to prevent the formula from coming back up. You can have a swallow study down where they take an xray of his while he eats (not as scary as it sounds) and they may tell you to weight his formula with a special nectar. Anyway, I would ask for a swallow study (there's a place in Plano and Presbytarian hospital that can do it) and try rice in the mean time--especially at night! Hope that helps.
