Ouchie!!! My husband had one on his bottom lip last week then we went out in the sun Saturday and he didn't use sunscreen (bad action on our part as he is VERY fair also) and now he has a really bad looking one coming on, on his upper lip even under his nose! HELP!
Anyone know of any tried and true remedies? He uses Abreva but it just does so so, I think.
Thanks....

What can I do next?

My husband gets them all of the time, and he's come up with his own special remedy. He scratches the tops off of them (or pops them depending on how big they are), then holds a swab with rubbing alcohol on them for a few minutes. He says it's really painful, but the cold sores disappear a lot faster this way. Thought I would throw this out, I know it's not for everyone. Good luck!

L-Lysine is found in the vitamin supplements. I take 3 tablets orally @ first sign of one. It will help with the healing of the tissue. Keep taking 2 times a day until gone.

Tell him to ask his doctor for a prescription of Valtrex. Then, the next time he feels the tingle of one starting, take the valtrex, morning and night. Usually all I have to do is take it one day, and the cold sore never even comes up. For now, keep his lips moisturized real well until it heals. I HATE them too!

According to Dr. Brouse "Citrus will slow healing....... Keep body well hydrated with pure water, herbal teas, vegetable soups and juices. Avoid soft drinks, processed foods, sugary foods, caffeine and high-fat or fried foods to reduce toxins and build the immune system."

Supplements can help build the immune system. Vitamin B and C are a good place to start for cold sores.

I would begin on a health and wellness regimen to build his immune system. One reason being any deficiency in our body opens us up to virus, bacteria, and other nasty things getting into our system. Building the foundation of nutrients at the cellular level can be achieve. Check out the Vita Lea and or the Vitalizer daily stripes for building the healthy foundation and then add a daily dose of NutriFeron that way any time something tries to attack him such as virus, bacteria etc his body will automatically kick in the ward off what is attempting to attack. visit the followiing website for more information.

In Holland where I am from there is an over the counter cold sore cream. Here it is prescription and called Zovirax. I use it at first tingle and can often prevent a break out altogether. Also, with age (I am 50 and have had them since about age 7) the virus also ages and lately I have maybe 1 breakout every 1 or 2 years. It has acyclovir in it, as does Valtrex which are tablets you take for about 10 days or so when you feel it coming on.
See a doctor, since herpes virus can spread to other areas (skin, eyes) when it may be called something else so I would have this looked at.

Go the Valtrex route...it helps tremendously and since I've been using it the last few years, my breakouts are less frequent. Another Rx that works really well is Denavir. It is an ointment containing acylovir. Anymore though, I just use the Valtrex. Have your husband be very careful around your children...Coldsores are very contagious and the initial infection from them can make you really, really ill.

Hi--
Topically you can get ointments with lysine in them---we bought one called super lysine and that helps it heal. Internally, Olive leaf extract is fantastic for cold sores.

Get prescription strength medicine from your Dr. Not only will it help the cold sore go away faster now that it's already there, it really helps them from coming on full blown if you use it right when you start to feel one come on. Hope that helps. Cold Sores are horrible. Another tip, kisses are off limits until they're gone.

My sister used to regularly get cold sores and she swears by lysene (sp) daily to prevent.
May not be very helpful now, though:(

I have had cold sores all my life. Off and on. I get them when I seem to get really stressed out. And the only thing that has worked for me is I pop the blister with a clean needle.(Soak needle in rubbing alcohol to clean) Sounds gross I know, leave the skin on after you pop it cause it will then turn into the scab. After you've popped it, take an ice cube and hold it on there for about 15 to 20 mins. You could do the ice cube before you pop it to numb it if you want. The ice calms the sting and helps to dry up the blister. Do the ice periodically until the scab forms. Once the scab forms than all you have to do is wait for it to heal. It works every time for me! And it shortens the life of the blister. It's usually gone and healed in about a week.
I swear by this! And it's free! Doesn't cost you a thing!

definitely lysine, an amino acid, found with vitamins. do a google search for lysine rich foods and also for arginine rich foods. you want to boost lysine and avoid arginine in your diet as well as take lysine supplements with outbreaks (or even preventatively if you are feeling sick). you have to experiment a little to find the dose that works for you but both my husband and i find it very helpful to prevent and also speed healing. good luck!

I've always had pretty good luck with Abreva, but only if I put in on AS SOON as I feel the tingle. If I wait till I see the bump, it's too late. Also, I put it on way more often than is recommended. I also use Carmex daily to help prevent. If the Abreva isn't working, I would think it's time for a prescription.

Good luck!

I have to take Valtrex for mine. The over the counter stuff does absolutely nothing at all for me.

Zovirax is also good.

Easy to call the doc and get a script for one of those. Usually you don't need to go in.
