Blow it off. A virus is a virus. Kiddos get this stuff everywhere this time of year. The toys they touch, the stuff they put in their mouths, the uncovered sneezes.... Tis the season. It's a pain, but don't blow it out of proportion. When they get older, it won't be so frequent. What you can do is keep them rested. Sleep!!!! Feed them well...veggies, FRUITS, plenty of vit C, good foods, WATER!!
Teach them to wash their hands and not pick their noses.
Hang in there. This too shall pass.

Try giving him vitamin C it could help, he may be low on it and it does help with congestion, cough and runny nose. But if you check and he is teething give him Humpries # 3 for teething relief your pharmacist will know what it is. It is behind the counter and no prescription is needed.

I'd try taking him off of all dairy for 10-14 days. If he has a sensitivity to it not even necessarily an allergy) it can cause a lot of excess mucus which can lead to nasal infections. Even if it turns out that he has airborn allergies, removing dairy can reduce his respiratory allergic reactions. There are plenty of alternative to dairy: soy milk, rice milk, soy yogurts, nut milks, etc. and all are fortified with calcium and vit D. It couldn't hurt to try. If it helps then you might have found a solution. If it doesn't, then you can cross it off your list as a potential problem

It may be allergies too. My son has had a runny nose and a bit of a cough for weeks now. There is something in the air bothering him though.

Hey there. My son did the same thing when he started daycare. (he was much younger) I think that just happens. With all of those kids playing, touching and putting things in their mouths it is hard to stop them from getting sick. Once his immunity adjust he will be just fine. It sounds like he is just getting regular colds. If he was having trouble breathing I might be concerned. i did put a humidifier in my sons room at night and that helped so much with the congestion. I am all for meds when my son needs them, but I would talk to your doctor first.

Good Luck. I know it feels horrible not being able to fix it. Hang in there.

Both of my kids (4 1/2 & 2) had persistent coughs & runny noses. They were never "sick" when I took them to the dr...it was severe drainage issues from their sinuses. Their doc prescribed Singulair for them through March (because the weather change is so up & down during this time). We have not had one problem since they've been on it. I also do a cold mist humidifier in their rooms every night. Together, these work like a charm. Good luck! :)

Have you checked to see if he has new teeth coming in? My daughter, 2.5, had this happen a month ago. It turned out her upper molars are coming in. If he's not running a fever or a very low grade fever and the snot is clear, it normally indicates something like this or allergies. If his snot has a color to it, then he has an illness.

It is so scary to me to read some advice on this sometimes. Medicine seems to be the common thread and that is frightening to me for a small baby. We see a homeopath and he has helped my son with croup, colds, viruses, etc...for 9 years. If you want more info you can email at ____@____.com

This recommendation may sound crazy to you at first, but please hear me out. Buy a Neil Med Sinus Rinse Kit, and rinse your son's sinuses when he gets up in the morning. You can buy the kit at Target, Walgreens, CVS, etc.; maybe even your grocery store (mine sells it).
I'll tell you about my experience with it before I tell you more about the kit (in case you don't know). I have a 5 year old daughter with a medical condition called Cystic Fibrosis which affects the mucous membranes throughout her body. Her doctor recommended that I rinse her nose (and mine whenever I need it) to get the mucous out and keep sinus infections at bay. Well, was I impressed!!! I also have a 2 1/2 year old, and I rinse her sinuses too because she kept getting ear infections and nasty colds. She was frightened at first, but when she saw what came out, and she found that she could suck her thumb comfortably afterward, she too was impressed. She was still frightened, however, but at the same time wanted to do it (like jumping off of a diving board for the first time). For a while, I had to wrap her tightly in a towel to keep her hands out of the way, hold her over my knee, and basically wrestle with her, but now, she asks me to do it. She'll walk into the bathroom, but her little blanket on the counter, and lean over the sink. Mind you, I HAD to do this to keep the family healthy. It was stressful at first. But, I'm totally sold on it and can't figure out why I'm only now finding out you can do this. It just makes sense.
I do have some tips: 1) Yes, you'll feel like your eyeballs are swimming, but you'll get used to it, 2) use fairly warm water, but certainly not hot. It will be much more comfortable than cool water, 3) plug the sink so that you can see the color and amount of mucous your son has and determine if he has an infection, 4) Try to be exact in your water measurement to keep the solution from stinging, 5) try not to be grossed out, 6) keep doing it!
My little one coughs until I rinse her nose in the morning, and then she's good for the day. It's also cut her incidents of ear infections and colds by more than half.
Now, for what it is. Basically, it's an 8oz. squeeze bottle. The kit comes with premixed packets of baking soda and potassium. You mix a packet with water in the bottle to get saline which is much more gentle on your sinuses. If you used plain tap water, if would sting really bad. There is a pediatric version, with packets measured for 4 ounces, but I found that I had to rinse her twice, so I switched back to the 8oz.
I hope this was helpful to you! Good luck.

Sounds like allergies to me. If the cough is not wet in sound, could be from drainage. I would try giving him some allergy medicine to see if it gives him some relief in a few days. Benadryl or Zyrtec.

I agree with some of the other moms, sounds like allergies. My son took Claritin ready tabs from the time he was 2 on, during allergy season. Luckily he doesn't need something everyday. I just start giving him claritin or zyrtec when he first starts with the symptoms. But, I do know people who have to take something everyday, year round. My pediatrician would have me give him a claritin in the am and a benadryl at bedtime to jumpstart the process of drying all the stuff up.

My 3 year old is going through the same thing and she's not even in daycare or preschool. It's just winter viruses . . . not a heck of a lot to be done other than treat the symptoms and pray for Spring!

Sounds like allergies to me too. Both my kids get it. I give Zyrtec over the counter every night before bed till symptoms get better. my son is 3 & 24# my daughter is 4 & 36# I give them 4ml or just under 1 tblsp. Allergies last longer than 1 week, no fever, lungs are clear. snotty nose congestion, teary glassy eyes. My daughter's eyes get a dark purply tinge to them kinda where bags would be. That is a tale tale sign of allergies. Could be from soaps, stuff in the air, things they eat.

have you thought that it might be allergies? at such a young age, it 's hard to determine what external factors might be upsetting his system (if it's in fact allergies, but it's worth considering.. my son had the same thing and I though what another cold......... turns out, while he does get colds, he is allergic to dust mites, hence the reason for his sneezing first thing in the morning.. We did all the things like encasing his bed and boxspring with lining that dust bites can't penetrate and it did help some, but now we give em children's zyrtec which has helped quite a bit. now that he older, I am going to have an allergy panel work up on him.
I definitely suggest your taking your child to a doctor who understands allergies.
Also, a child can have childhood asthma (my son had it) he has since grown out of it. He never had any major attacks, but did wheeze a little bit. Again, some children are able to outgrown the less severe asthma.. at least as I understand it.
in the meanwhile, why not try a children's allergist and relieve your mind.
best of luck to you

It might be allergies. Gross question, but what color is his snot? If it's green, it's an infection (usually sinus), if it's yellow, it's usually a virus, if it's clear or white, it's probably allergies. Usually the runny nose causes the cough because while your child lays down all night, that snot runs down the back of his throat into their lungs--causing a cough. If you're truly worried about asthma or bronchitis, then take him to the doctor. They can hear if his lungs are wheezing and diagnose him w/ those lung problems. Hope this helps.
