Clowns, Pinatas, B-day Cake for Circus Party

I have three questions about our upcoming circus themed birthday party. My son is turning three. What age is appropriate for a pinata? The kid's will be from 1.5- 8 so quite a wide range. I thought IF we do one we'd let the youngest take a turn and then move up in age. Any thoughts? Is three too young? I don't want frustration for the birthday boy. Next, have you hired a clown in the DFW area? Any suggestions and what kind of price range? I found one with great reviews but he's $175 an hour. Are there less expensive ones that are still great. If we have a clown for entertainment should I still plan for games? He's here an hour so that takes up a big chunk of the time. I also need a cute circus cake and am not seeing any at the grocery stores. Any cake bakers on here? Would love to see pics and pricing. Thanks bunches. Can't wait to see your responses.

What can I do next?

I don't know what all you plan on having the clown do but there is a age limit on who can have balloons so you may want to think about that. My mom and dad are clowns so I have grow up around it.

I don't know anything about clowns or pinatas. However, Texas Star Bakery in Hurst has excellent cakes. They have done my son's every year. They are pricey compared to the grocery stores but they can and will do whatever you want.

There are Pull string pinatas available - I found those to be very good for the age range - little ones get so upset that their Batman or whatever pinata is being smashed to bits - but the strings offer the ability to keep the character intact - while still letting the kids have fun. If you have a friend who could do it - I would maybe suggest a face painter or maybe someone making balloon animals - I think Michaels has kits - my clown party experience with little ones ( 3 -7 ) turned out to be just that - she did a few tricks with a bird and bunny, but the kids were crazy about having their faces painted - the younger ones really weren't into sitting still to watch the tricks. Good luck and have fun!

3 is a good age for pinatas - they make them now where you can just pull a ribbon and the goodies fall out ... beware of the stick if you have little ones around, they could be an accident.

In my experience, most kids are afraid of clowns--so take them to see one before you book one.
Pinatas are accidents waiting to happen--the pull string for this age is ideal--if you do go with the stick kind, line the kids up far away, and eliminate the dash for candy until you give the okay.
I second the idea of a face painter, though! ;)
It's for all ages and sure to be a smash hit!

Hi, G.. I don't know about any clowns, but I do think that your kids are too young for a pinata. First of all, they're very hard to break and secondly, what will you do when someone does break it and all the kids scramble for the treats? Will the little ones even have a chance against the older kids? I'd save it for when they're older...

To answer your pinata question, I think you have a nice age range for it. Letting the little ones go first is a great idea.
2 suggestions- have bags ready for the kids with their names on them to give them to gather their goodies once the pinata is busted open.
And, it may help to explain to the birthday boy that HE may not be the one to actually bust it open- that it is an activity for all of the kids.

As for a clown, the going rate is anywhere between $150-$200 an hour. The younger ones may lose interest and/or not be able to sit through the entire show. I would invite the parents to sit with the younger ones as that will help.

Not sure you need too much more- children love to play outside if you have a playground.

Just my two cents.

I'm not sure about clowns or cakes...I just have an opinion on the pinata. I had a pinata at my sons 2 yr old bday party and he absolutely loved it. There were different ages like you say will be at your party. We let the birthday boy go first and then did youngest to oldest. My son didn't care that he was not the one to break it open because he was so excited about all the candy he was collecting. We did have a bag for each child to pick up their candy. If your worried about the older kids getting more candy, you could always have a bowl with some extra candy for the little ones to get some out of it. Also, if your worried about kids hitting the pinata you could always get one of those pinatas where the kids can pull a string. We've done that before and the kids loved it too! Goodluck!
