I know this may be a ding dong question, but this is my first time buying clothes in the bigger boys sizes for my son. It was so easy when he was a toddler etc, because the sizes matched their age.
Now, that he is growing out of his 5T's, what size do I start with now? The 5T waist fits him still, but his pants are too short. He looks like Urkle. LOL

JF: Thank you for that tip. You're absolutely right about how sizes different by different makes of clothing. Just because a six will fit with one make, doesn't mean it will fit with another. Goodness...this should be fun. LOL
Most pants now have an adjustable waistband inside the pants. It is a little elastic strip that attaches to a button according to the size they are at. They work great for my daughter who seemed to need the length of the larger sizes but not the width.
My oldest son has this problem. He needs an 8 in the waist & a 10 in length (he is 8 y/o). So I buy him 10 slims or 10 regular with the adjustable waist (incase he grows in his waist). Go to the boys section with him & have him try on a 6 slim. I buy ours at Walmart with the adjustable waist (there is elastic in the inside of the pants with a button: you unbutton the elastic, pull it as tight as needed & rebutton it).

The sizes still are close to the age. You just now go to a different department and buy size 6. It does seem that the length is too short while the waist in the next size will be too large. For that reason buy pants with the adjustable waist. The waistband has elastic in it with buttonholes on the ends and buttons inside the pants on the waist band.
And some brands are longer than others. Also size 5 may be longer than 5T. The difference between toddler and boys sizes is the amount of room available for diapers. It helps to know what length you need and measure.making sure that there is some extra length to allow for growth. I'm glad that it's now fashionable to roll up the bottom of pants even for adults. :)
I've also found that it's important to dry clothes on low. When the temperature of the dryer is hot clothes tend to shrink in length but not in width. Over the years I've found that my t-shirts become too short. I have a friend who never dries knits in the dryer. Her t-shirts look nicer and last longer but for me it's to much of an inconvenience.
Interestingly, we were at Children's Place a few weeks ago and overheard a similar question. Our son is getting into 5T for the same reason, he has really long limbs and is outgrowing things in the arms/legs before the waist.
The store clerk said that the Boys' 5 is actually smaller than the 5T. We kind of scratched our heads on that one......we didn't ask for clarification.
I don't know if you shop at Carters, but we've found their sizes to be more generous in length and have been getting as many things there as we can with the 20% off coupons they offer.
We've also had good luck at Kohl's, and the Boys' Department there has a much better selection than the Toddlers. But, finding the XS seems to be trickiest.
Hi G. - you would just move on to 6, 7, 8. If your child is a normal weight/height, he will just about match the sizes. Different stores have different cuts - my first was tall and pretty thin although not a slim. He couldnt wear Gap because they were too boxy. He grew out of Children's place quickly because they were cut too slim. Lands End fits pretty big as well. My oldest likes to wear track pants alot - I found that Walmart has a good selection and most are under $10. Their Faded Glory brand is also pretty reasonable for jeans and khakis - usually under $10 too but the khaki's fit bigger so he wears a 6/7 in those where the track pants are 8. just to contrast - we had a pair of 7 jeans from Kohl's that he grew out of last year. We have a few brands we like and stick with them
Most stores, especially those online, will have inseam and waist dimensions to help you fit.
The boys section of clothes start at size 4. Toddler clothes tend to be wider and shorter than the regular sizes to fit diapers and pull ups so be prepared to try things on in the dressing room. Bribe with a treat to the nearest ice cream store after he cooperates, if he likes something else better than ice cream then insert that place instead. The sizes will be diferent and the cut will be different too. Boys wear clothes are slimmer and longer than toddler clothes. They have slims, regulars and full cut added to that too. Girls are lucky, at 5 they can wear anything from either department. The toddler stuff may be a bit too short in the waist but still usually looks okay.
Extra small is a 4-6
Small is 6-7
Medium is 8-10
Large 12-14
Extra large 16, also is pretty much the same as extra small mens or small mens.
I am having the same problem. The waist but they were too short I had my son try on many sizes and found that size 6 slim works the best. You can get them at Old Navy and The Children's Place although they are tough to find in the store. I ordered online. Just a word of warning, the sizes vary by manufacturer. I just bought a bunch of clothes for my 6 year old who recently outgrew his 5T's. I have to return some of the shorts because, while they are all the same size, some are too snug. Unfortunately, he's getting to the age where he has to try stuff on.

Try XS (4/5) at Children's Place. That worked for my son after the 5Ts. Or straight 4's might work from elsewhere....
