hi everyone. my husband and i are first time parents. we are cloth diapering using mainly prefolds and fitteds. we are having problems at night though. quinn seems to wake constantly in the cloth. i'm wondering what other parents have used (cloth wise) at night to keep their babies happy. my husband and i have caved and put him in disposables at night but i would really like to stop doing that.

What can I do next?

When I cloth diapered I used FuzzyBunz at night. They are fleece pocked diapers that you insert a prefold into. They kept my heavy wetters dry (and my bed also!) all night long.

Goodmamas are the best.
My sister uses cloth, but her youngest is now potty trained, so she is selling all of her goodmamas. She is a mamapedia mom, or you can e-mail her at

I'm cloth diapering my second kid, and I used cloth at night with my first until she was around 12 months. At that point, I just couldn't find a combination that would hold 12 hours of pee, so I used sposies at night.

With my current little guy, I've been using sposies at night as well. I find that if I don't, he gets diaper rash. He's a good sleeper, doing 7-8 hours from 5 weeks.

I wish I could help you, but I stopped feeling bad about using 1 sposie a day a long time ago. Besides, my first potty trained by 23 months, and I know it was because of CDing, and I am sure my second will train early too, so I've just decided that using sposies 1% of the time just isn't that big of a deal.

I use cloth during the day and G diaper inserts at night. They're fully compostable or biodegradable and also flushable, so you don't have to worry about landfills or stuff like that. Good luck! :)

try a pocket diaper like Fuzzi Bunz at night. You can stuff it so it is super absorbant, but the layer against the child is fleece, so it wicks the liquid away from the baby, so he always feels dry. My boys wore Fuzzi Bunz exclusively, and we never had any problems day or night. But the fleece inner will help him feel dry at night.

We use all in ones from bluepenguin.biz. They are amazing. You might try ordering a few of those for nighttime use and keep using your prefolds during the day. You can also order extra pads to use in the all in ones to prevent soaking.

KnickerKnappie Super-Do's!!! It's an insert for a pocket diaper (which I personally prefer immensely over prefolds and covers), lots of layers of hemp. I think I added a bit to it for overnight for a while but from 1-2 years just this insert got us thru the night. It's thick, but not like packing in enough layers with prefolds.
And with pocket diapers they have a layer of fleece next to the skin so they don't feel the wetness.

I love my BumGenius one-size diapers. Our daughter is 2 years old and we've been using them pretty much since day one. For overnights we either double stuff them or we add a couple of hemp liners (they're much thinner). Don't give up!

A cheap and easy option is to buy some fleece at the fabric store and put it on top of the cotton.

I like FuzziBunz and BumGenius pockets, which seem to wick away the moisture.

I can't really answer that b/c we just started CDing my LO. He's still in disposables at night b/c I don't even have all my CD's yet. But here's a link to the cloth diapering board I'm part of. I've gotten tons of help there!

We CD my daughter until she was 16 months old (we thought she was breaking out due to the CD's, but now realize it was the wipe solution I made!).

We used an All-In-One (AIO) diaper from www.twigandvine.com. They are diapers made by Amy, a SAHM and worked GREAT! We rarely had any leakage...even over night. We did put an extra insert in at night.

Amy's diapers are AWESOME and I plan to buy a smaller set for baby #2 due in April. They are much cheaper than most of the commericial brands.

Maybe you could invest in 2 or 3 of these types of diapers to use only at night?

Honestly, every time I use an occasional disposable at night, my son wakes up with wet PJs and sheets. Maybe its just the Seventh Generation brand. Anyway, I end up using them if I get behind in the wash etc. The thing that works for my heavy wetter is doubling up. I use two diapers - one cotton prefold and one hemp. Hemp holds a ton of liquid even though it is thinner than the cotton diapers. Hemp on bottom and cotton on top (its softer). I fold as normal and use a snappy cover. It does look really bulky but he seems to not mind it and is still as mobile as always. This works for us and his clothes and sheets stay dry. Good luck.

Try one of the pocket diapers that will wick away moisture and use the insert that comes with it along with 2 slim hemp liners. The hemp liners are fantastic because they don't add alot of bulk but are highly absorbent. I used thirsties fitteds with the liners at night with my son who was older and they didn't seem to bother him as far as wetness.

I had some fleece material that I had picked up on sale, cut it to the shape of the diaper liner and placed it on top of the liner. After several hours, I was so surprised that it felt completely dry even though the layers beneath were soaking wet. The fleece cut-out adhered to the micro-fleece liner quite conveniently, so I didn't have to do anything fancy to keep it in place.

Hi B.,

We use the BumGenius 3.0 (one size -- adjustable tabs), and put hemp inserts in (more absorbent) -- available at Be By Baby (at Roscoe and Lincoln -- www.bebybaby.com). We still have a lot of leaks (usually we wash pajamas every day) but I think that's due to the fit of the diaper with the thicker hemp inserts and not the lack of absorbency. Our daughter doesn't wake in the night because she's wet.

I've heard good things about Fuzzi Bunz. Any fleece-lined diaper will be moisture-wicking (unlike prefolds). And I also know of a lot of cloth diapering parents who resort to using disposables at night.

Good luck, whatever you decide!

I used FuzziBunz and BumGenius at night. I still prefer the prefolds during the day, but liked the wicking of the FuzziBunz and BumGenius at night.

Fuzzi Bunz with a two layer hemp insert! Works like a charm. I've actually had more accidents with a disposable vs. cloth

I really like the pocket diapers with hemp inserts. I like the AMP diapers with two three layer hemp inserts. I got my AMP diapers from snooty booty diapers. She also sells the two layer inserts. You could triple those to see how that goes. Just remember hemp needs to be washed 3 or 4 times separate from your other diapers (other laundry is fine) to get the natural oils out without coating your other diapers. This can cause wicking. At first they didn't seem that great but the more you wash them and dry them the more they kind of fluff and become more absorbent.
