My favorites were Fuzzi Bunz too. I liked the Bum Genuis when mine was older but he was really tiny so I couldn't use them until almost 6 months on him and even then they were pretty big. My second child was a lot larger and the BG fit a lot sooner. I have a bunch that I'm trying to sell still if you're intested in trying some used ones out first. Personally, that's what I wish I had done with mine because they are so expensive new and they don't stay new after one use :) I didn't really think of that option though but all mine are stain free and look brand new. I have sold quite a bit already (all my BG are gone) but I have massive amount of Fuzzi Bunz and prefolds (my prefolds were rarely used) and I have some covers too. I also have a word doc. that I created that explains the different types. I can send you that if you're interested and you can pass it on - I loved cloth diapering and really miss it!! We use bum genius 3.0 and also have a couple of their AIO. They just came out with a BG 4.0 that is basically the same with a few minor upgrades. I really like them. I have tried fuzzi bunz, kissaluvs (sp?), Gdiapers, and a couple of other SAHM made diapers and I ended up selling them and going back to my BG's. Getting started cloth diapering can be overwhelming if you don't have someone with experience to help you out. Which is I volunteer to lead a local cloth diaper group based out of Plano as a part of the Real Diaper Association. We don't have our next meeting until after you are due but if your interested message me and can get you setup on our email list for information about meetings.

As for washing. Newborn poop is water soluable to just throw it in the machine, after solids are started just dump the poop in the toilet before washing. Once in the machine, cold rinse, hot wash with an additive free detergent, and an extra rinse if needed to make sure all the detergent in rinsed out. Drying temps will depend on the type of diapers. Usually a medium heat.

Personally, I primarily use prefolds with Thirsties covers but I tried every kind of diaper and they all have their up and downs. I like prefolds because they VERY cheap and easy to care for.

You may also want to considered getting started with a cloth diaper service for the first couple of months to try it out and buy your own to wash after life has adjusted to the newest member of the family. I use bum genius all in one. They fit her best starting at 10lbs. She is 6 months old now and they still work great. I like the all in one's so that you only buy them once and they are supposed to last until she is potty trained. I would recommend getting white so that you can bleach if necessary.

I use bum genius, an all-in-one. As do most of my friends who cloth diaper. It works perfect for us, but I did not start my son on the cloth diapers until he was about 3 months old. I am not sure how they work on newborns. Most people I know who use them for newborns have two sets (one when they are tiny then a set when they get bigger). I also recommend bum genius because they have a 1 year warranty. A few of our diapers elastic has gone out in the leg area and we just send them in and they give us back a brand new one. I soooo know how you feel! There's so much info and many different kinds.....overwhelming. Fortunately, the hard part seems to be getting started. Once you are in it, it gets much easier. That being said, babies are shaped different. In addition to boy vs. girl- leg shape, pudginess, etc. can all be a factor. I know that cd's are more expensive upfront, but I would suggest buying one of each brand (after you've narrowed it down a little). My SIL did a lot of research before purchasing the FuzziBunz. She ended up having her son leak quite a bit and happened to get one BumBenius from a friend. Turns out, the second cd worked better for her son's "build". If you can narow it down to a couple prefolds, AIO, etc. I would buy or register for one of each. Once you get your little one home and try them out, you will know which ones you'd like to purchase more of. Just a suggestion.....good luck and congratulations!!!

I've been using cloth diapers (prefolds and Thirsties covers) since my daughter was one month old. I've loved it because we have had few blowouts. For a long time, I would use Swaddlers when we were not at home (and still use Cruisers on occasion), but I've gotten some pocket diapers and love using them at home. However, when we're on vacation, I do use disposables!

I went to a local boutique type store in my town. Their best seller is the fuzzi bunz one size. If you have small babies then they'll probably look a little big for the first couple months. I'm doing it old school with just the cloth (most use as burp cloths now) for the first month. After the baby is born I'm going to try a 3 week trial and get a whole set of different diapers to try. I hear you can also do this online, but I don't know what website. You'll be able to find out if you like snaps or velcro and disposable inserts or cloth inserts. I was told that if you breastfeed, the poop just washes out in the washer.
I too am doing this for the first time for #3. I hope the best and just take it as it goes.

I'm using Bum Genius on my second kid. They aren't good newborn diapers, mind you, but supposedly the new ones will work better. Fuzzi Bunz are great too. If I was you, I'd do a trial pack. Jillian Drawer 's does it, as do many of the online retailers. Different diapers work better for different kids.

I highly recommend buying all-in-one, one size. Very economical. I also recommend pocket diapers, because they do the best at keeping the pee off of the skin.

I used fuzzi bunz small for our baby for the first two months of her life. Then I switched to bum genius- one size. They are wonderful, work great, easy to clean. When we travel I use my cloth diapers but also have gdiapers. They have flushable and cloth inserts- they work very well. I love cloth diapering. If you have any specific questions , let me know. Basically I just second what everyone else has said! It is tempting to just go buy a bunch of one kind but it is really risky! I cloth diapered my first son and have just had another one. I am finding out that the diapers that worked great for my first don't work so well for my second, so I am so grateful I have a bunch of different styles. Newborns do best with just prefolds and covers, it saves you laundry too. That being said, I hated how bulky they were on my new little baby and bought a few trimmer pocket diapers and I am glad I did. Good luck! You will find a method that works for you after a while, no two moms cloth diaper the same!

There are a whole slew of moms who work from home making cloth diapers. If possible, I would stick with those rather than mass produced diapers.

I don't like much clean up so I used gdiapers. They cost a little more, but it was worth it to me. To flush the liners you tear a strip off and dump them in the toilet and they break apart. My husband refused to do it because he didn't like the idea of touching the liners when they were dirty, but I still liked them better because even if you throw them away they break down in 60 days as opposed to 500 years for disposables!! You can order them online which is the best way to go, but you can also buy the inserts and starter kits at Whole Foods. www.gdiapers.com

The "best" cloth diaper really depends on your personal preferences and lifestyle. Personally, for newborns, I love prefolds with snappis and velcro covers. You are changing so many diapers, and prefolds are so easy to care for. When my babies get a little older we transition to one-size diapers. Usually pockets and all-in-one's. Some of my favorites are Mommys Touch, and the BumGenius organic all-in-one. I love that the Mommy's Touch pocket diaper has an opening on each side, so you DON'T have to worry about pulling out the dirty, wet insert before washing. It will come out on its own in the wash. The BG organics are SO trim. And they have snaps, which I like, because my little girl can take off velcro by herself, but not snaps.

I really love Thirsties diaper covers. They adjust in size with snaps in the front and Velcro across the waist so they last a long time, making it even more economical to use with them, I also like some cloth diapers that were given to me. They are cut to be preshaped and have a flannel backing. Super easy.(sorry I don't know the maker)

I've tried a few different diapers. My favorites were Fuzzi Bunz and the fitteds with a fleece cover that I made myself.
There is an overwhelming amount of information. It is easy to get confused. I would suggest you sample a variety. You will find that you have your own preferences. Also, not all babies are built the same. What works well for one, is not always the best fit for another.
