Cloth Diapers - Homewood, IL

Hi Moms!! I just signed up for the "Changing Diapers, Changing Minds" program through Jillian's Drawers as I am expecting my second child in the next 3 weeks. I figured I would try out the bumgenius 3.0 on my 16 month old for nighttime because she's been a little rashy lately and I like the idea of trying out some cloth on her as well. Well, I have the diaper on its largest setting (she weighs 31 lbs and wears 24 month clothing) and it has leaked both times I've used it. There are inserts sown in...I really don't think there's room for a doubler in there as the diaper seems to be on the snug side...are they just not for her? Should I see about buying a different size/brand to try? They market this diaper as "lasting from newborn to potty training" but I don't see how that's possible. I'm afraid that this will discourage my husband from wanting to use cloth on the baby...and it has been a bit of a hassle. Any advice is appreciated...

What can I do next?

yay for trying cloth diapers :) i switched over with my third and love it...that said, i used pockets at first for nighttime (you are using an all-in-one??) and that stopped working when she started moving around more in her sleep...one method i know works wonderfully is a good fitted diaper, with a wool cover. If you check out diaperpin.com there are a TON of nighttime suggestions as well as tips for cloth diapering in general! i have soooo much info in my head so if you have any more questions i'd love to help just send me a message or email (____@____.com)

You are using the all in ones? I have a few of the BG pockets. They may just need more washing to reach peak absorbency. You may want to try a sized diaper too. My pre-schoolers still aren't potty trained at night so we use L and XL FuzziBunz stuffed with microfiber and hemp inserts for them. I would go ahead and contact Jillian's drawers and ask their opinion too. I haven't bought from them before but every cloth diaper business that I have bought from has been really great about answering questions. Good luck on your cloth diapering adventure. There is a bit of a learning curve to it but it is worth the effort. I wish I would have started sooner.

PS Are you using the BG on the baby too? They may leak because of being too big. Most newborns take a few weeks to grow into them. It might be worthwhile to invest in some pre-folds and covers. I never thought I'd like that type of diaper but I find myself using them more than any other. There are so many cute cover options too.

Hooray for you for wanting to try cloth! I use BG 2.0s which are pockets, not all-in-ones. For my 18 month old daughter we add two hemp inserts (in addition to the cotton one that came with the diapers) in her overnight diapers and only once in a blue moon have any issues with leaking. The hemp inserts are super thin and about as absorbent as the cotton ones, so it's like having a triple stuffed diaper with less bulk than if it were double stuffed. Good luck, and remember, even if you only use cloth during the day for your 16 month old and the newborn it will still make a huge difference to your checkbook and the planet :O)

I use cloth on my 14 month old during the day and some of what we use is BG. I rarely have any leaking problems. Are they brand new? Did you wash them per instructions? Also, I don't use them at night cause he wets too much. I use sposies at night rather than put huge bulk in a cloth diaper, which is really what you have to do to use them at night. 2-3 hours is usually what I get out of a cloth diaper, maybe 4 if he isn't wetting too much. The BG I am familiar with does not have anything sewn in. There is an internal liner but you are supposed to stuff them with a microfiber insert. I liked the BG for when he was little, but now we use more of the prefolds with a seperate cover, they just seem to fit him better. The BG do fit and work, I just prefer the prefolds and I feel like I can get them cleaner, where as the BG tend to take on some funny smells sometimes. My boy is 24 lbs, wears mostly 18 month and I do think they will work a little while longer. I don't know if it will go all the way to potty training, but I can see him wearing them til almost 2 at least. If you do decide to try prefolds, they do make the seperate sizes so make sure you size up at the appropriate time. The standard prefold size was getting tight on my son about 10 months and I almost stopped using them cause they were such a struggle to get on. But then I ordered the brown edge toddler size and they fit MUCH better. I get my prefolds at green mountain diapers, they are excellent quality. Right now I am using mostly litewrap covers in size large (20-30 lbs) and they work great. I also have used swaddlebees abc covers when he was a little younger (medium size) and those worked well too, but when I got the bigger prefolds I ordered a few bigger covers too. I don't use cloth all the time, when he has a bad rash and I was to use desitin I use sposies so I don't ruin my cloth, and at night and when we are traveling I use sposies, but it still seems to save us money and I feel like I am making an effort towards not polluting the environment so much.

I use fuzzi bunz on my son who is 6 months, I use two very thin hemp inserts and they hold for 12 hours at night (2 microfibers will do it too, but they're bulkier). I have the one size bum genius but they are not the all in ones, I have used all in ones before and did not like them. I like the pocket diapers and think they're really easy. I keep a few velcro around for care givers who find the snaps daunting and I know it's taboo but once a month I hit them with a tbsp of bleach and they don't smell (I tried oxiclean, not as effective). As for wipes I picked up a huge thing of washclothes from target for like 5 bucks and that has sustained us thus far. I encourage you to try cloth diapering but try a few different things and find what works for you. Oh...for older toddlers I found that target brand diapers were the only ones that held all night. But there again, it's different with every kid. Good luck!
