Hello!

I'm "newly" pregnant and while we were trying, I decided we would use cloth diapers.

Any input on brands, laundry soap, websites, etc. that can be recommended would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

Hi T.! There are so many ways to cloth diaper, it can be difficult to choose which way you want to go. I use cloth on my 8 month old daughter and I love it! I decided to go the "cheapest" route - diaper covers with Chinese prefolds. The Chinese prefolds are super cheap and super durable and the covers are nice because you can re-use them a couple of times before you wash them. I get the covers from www.wigglewormbottoms.com and the prefolds from www.greenmountaindiapers.com. I do have some Bum Genius 2.0 but I really prefer the covers and prefolds. Also, my daughter has NEVER had diaper rash. Never, and it's because of the cloth. One last thing you have to be careful of when washing cloth is that you don't use too much soap. Your rinse cycle should have no bubbles in the water, but you'll learn about that the more you read. Good luck!

We use cloth diapers... Fuzzi Bunz and have been very happy. The only thing we ever had to buy in addition is some more absorbant inserts (bamboo or hemp) for overnights. The standard insert that comes with them is great for normal day use, but you might need 2 inserts stuffed in or else get a super absorbant insert to use for a heavy overnite wetter. We really love them. We use Allens Naturally detergent with them, as I think it was recommended right on the Fuzzi Bunz website when we were 1st buying them. We bought locally from cottontailbaby.com She sells nationally, but is a mom from Clearwater. Excellent service! If you have any questions, please feel free to email me! I have been using cloth for almost 4 years... It has been great, and a $ saver!

i use the bumGenius one size pocket diapers for night time on my son who is going to be 4 in may. And have used them for my sisters baby when he was a not quite a month old. i use a micro fiber towel you get from Wal-Mart’s automotive section as a night time doubler. he never has leaks and they are heavy by morning. i got a starter pack which had several different types from the most basic prefolds and a cover to the bumGenius. i liked the prefolds but my hubby was just freaked out by them. i had less leaks with the bumGenius and they are just plain easier. i have 2.0 and 3.0 We have had the 2.0s for quite a wile and they are great for daytime also. I just use plain old tide powder to wash.

I use Bummis. I bought the starter pack before my son was born. Then when he grew out of the first set of covers that came with the pack, I just bought additional covers in the larger size and still use the original cloth diapers. They are probably the least "fancy" of all the brands out there but I really like them and have never had any problems with them. Many people love Fuzzi Bunz. I bought two of them to try and must have bought the only two that were made defective because they leaked every time that I tried using them.

You need to use low residue laundry detergent for your cloth. I buy "Charlies Soap" on line. Don't be shocked at the price...it seems high at first glance but it concentrated and lasts forever....you only use one pump for a large load. I wash diapers themselves in a medium size load and don't use an entire pump. One bottle lasts me more than six months.

Good luck

I have actually been researching the very same thing. I am due at the end of July, and I am thinking about cloth diapers. There is a lot of choices and information out on the web. From what I have found, I think I am going to have to find a local mom who uses cloth diapers to talk me through it. The choices are really overwhelming. Keep in touch with me, I would love know what you learn. I spent my entire day yesterday compiling a cost comparison of all the different types of cloth diapers to disposables and hybrids for a 24 month time period. (Yes, I'm a little obsessive). I would be happy to share what I learned with you. Let me know and I can email you the spreadsheet.

I had great luck using BumGenius with my son. They are one-size and seem to fit for quite a while. My son is very tall and we started having a problem when he got into size 18-24 months because the rise was not high enough on most cloth diapers. otherwise, I really enjoyed using them, especially at night. they really seemed to stop the issues with leaking at night because they are so much more absorbent.
