My husband and I are expecting our fourth child I believe in December, I will find out for sure on Thurday what the due date is. We have kept our secret from friends and family since we found out 2 days after Easter. We are thinking about breaking the news to our families on Mother's day, but would like cleaver ideas on how to spill the beans. My parents live out of town and won't be able to join us on Mother's Day, but my in-laws will be joining us for a BBQ. Any suggestions would be great!!! Thank you in advance, C.

So What Happened?

Wow!!! I have had so many wonderful suggestions so far, now I just have to decide which one to go with lol! I had a couple of responses that had mentioned.. wow your last two will be really close in age, and I couldn't figure out why it was the last two getting pointed out age wise when they were all about 2 years apart.. I then looked at my profile and saw my mistake. I updated my kids ages and when I did that, forgot to remove months from my youngest son!!! Lol.. guess its the pregnancy brain already kicking in! My youngest is a year and a half, not one and a half months like I stated. I had to laugh at myself! Anyway, I am so appreciative of everyone's support and wonderful suggestions. Thank you soo much, I will update you all again after Mother's Day

The way we told my in-laws... we bought onesies and wrote 'Grandmas Favorite' and 'Grandpas Favorite' on them with fabric paints. You could send those to them and tell them not open until Mothers Day... something like that. This is their first grandbaby here, so we got LOTS of screaming (excitement) and tears. :) It was pretty fun.

Let us know what you decide to do!

I like the scavenger hunt idea. Have them end up in the kitchen at the oven. Inside the oven have a hamburger or hot dog bun inside. See how long it takes people to figure it out. Congrats and good luck!

You know when you ship multiple packages you write...1 of 4. 2 of 4? Why not get your boys to make their own shirts. Have the oldest's shirt say 1 of 4, and so on down the line. Take a picture of them and email or mail it to your parents. Tell them not to open it until the day of the bbq. And have the boys wear it to the bbq.

You could take your ultrasound pictures and put it in a frame with "Christmas 08" and place one on each table. Mail one to your parents.

Get a bunch of balloons, have your sons make little notes that say..."Baby on the way." or something cute. Have them either tie the note to the balloon ribbon or put them inside the balloons. Have your boys walk around having out balloons. If you put them inside, have everyone pop them all at once.

How about asking your mother in law to help you in the kitchen. Put a "bun in the oven" with a note that says...Due in Dec. Have your mil open the oven and find your bun in the oven. Do the same for your mom, just send her a picture of the bun in the oven.

You could do a photo collage or photo slide show. Have it be of your boys this past year. And then add in a picture of your ultrasound.

good luck...have fun. I am impressed you have kept it to yourself. I would have already spilled the beans.

A cute Mother's Day gift would be a frame with 4 slots in it. You could include new pics of the three kids and then the fourth hole could have a cute little card slipped in that says "reserved for baby #4...due 12/2009". Or something like that. Congratulations!

Congratulations! It sounds like you have at least 2 children that could participate in the fun. You could have them hand out gifts, such as baby booties or diapers to everyone, or they could tell everyone while you record their reactions, (that's what we did), or have them hold up a sign that tells them. Any way you do it will be a memorable moment. Have fun with it!

I made my last pregnancy announcement by not saying anything at all. I simply wore a T-shirt that said "GOT BABY." Some of my family picked it up right away, but my Mom (of all people) was the last to realize what my shirt meant! Of course, everyone was happy!

I've always sent flowers - from the baby! The time I was due at Christmas included a poem... I remember the ending was "From the little miss that you'll meet on Christmas!" 10 years later my mom still thinks I'm pregnant if I send flowers! I had 4 babies in 6 years and knew my parents would actually NOT be very happy about the 4th, so I waited until I was 5 months pregnant to tell them - I'm a wimp, huh? I had 3 little boys and the 4th was a girl, so everyone was happy! :) ENJOY!

Have your youngest where a shirt that states "I am the big brother/sister" and wait until one of your relatives reads the shirt and figures it out....

This went off really well for my sister-- no one read the shirt for like an hour, but when they did everyone celebrated.

Our announcement was made at a family event too. I had a shirt made for my daughter that said "I'm gonna be a Big Sister May 2007" the family had a great time waiting for the next person who arrived to notice. For those that couldn't be at the event, I took a picture of her in the shirt and emailed it to the other relatives w/ the subject "Kate's (my daughter) Big News" I did the shirt at an emboriery place where they do team shirts and stuff (because I ran out of time), but you might still be able to order from (or get ideas) from one of these sites.

It was pretty cute how it registered when we read the shirt.(B I would suggest you put one all all three kids that says, I am going to be a big brother/sister, AGAIN on Mothers Day when the grandparents come over. Then take pictures of the day and e-mail to the other grandparents.

We told our family about our pregnancy on Thanksgiving by inviting them all to a birthday party for the newest family member. My girlfriend did the coolest thing to tell her hubby she was expecting again. This might be a fun way to tell your family. She took a picture of her 2 little ones holding a sign that said "Mommy's having a baby!!!" and gave the pic to her hubby in a card. The funniest thing was that he was mad that she told the kids first...she just laughed at him and reminded him that the kids couldn't read yet!! If your whole family is getting together for mother's day then you could make a card and have them all open it at the same time. Or If you are really sneaky like me give them all cards and in the card tell them not to tell anybody because it's a secret! Then you can see who cracks first!! Good luck and congrats!!

When we announced our first pregnancy (which was also kept a secret the entire first trimester) last Mother's Day 2007, we invited both our mothers and immediately family to a luncheon. Everyone who was important to us was there to learn the special news. We gave each mother a gift that was a "Grandkids" frame with a sonogram of the baby. They were instructed to open it at the same time. My mom figured it out immediately and it was a delightful way for everyone to hear our news.

Buy an "I LOVE MY GRANDMA" frame and put the baby's ultrasound in it. Give it to your Mother-in-law for her Mother's Day gift. Send the same thing to your mom with a note saying Don't open until I call you on Mother's Day. Call your mom while everyone is there, put the phone on speaker and have both moms open the "gift" together. Make sure you have a video camera on hand!

Both me & my husband's families live out of state. Last year we told them on Mother's Day that we were expecting our first child by sending a Grandmother's card to them for Mother's day & signed it Love,...(we taped the ultra sound photo inside of the card). My OB was great, he gave me a disk so I could make reprints. I was 3 months when we broke the news.

A friend of mine broke the news that she was expecting her 4th by dressing the children in shirts that read "Eeny, Miny, Miney" & Mom wore one that read "& 1 More"

Good Luck!

One of my friends years ago announced her pregnancy to her husband by putting a pair of baby booties in his lunch box.
When he opened it at lunch time, he was thinking, "What the heck?"
Then it occurred to him what she was telling him and he called her.
It was such a cute way....
Maybe you could do something like that??
If you give her flowers, you could tie a pair around the stems with ribbon....so they hang real cute, not wadded up around the stems :-)
Just a thought.

I'm a mom of 4 children too.
It isn't easy no matter how many children you have to let family know there is another one on the way. Families worry so much. Was this planned, can you afford it.....etc..
One way you could tell them is to find out what the sex of this baby is and make up a t-shirt or since you are wanting to let them know on Mother's Day, a cute card saying there is a new family member coming and the due date. It would be cute if you had a name for the new baby too. You could introduce the new little one by name through a card too.
I hope this helped a little!

Hi C.,

Here is what I did, and it was so much fun! I made the good news into a scavenger hunt (you can say it is a game your kids like to play with you). Each clue (small hidden post-its) offers a short riddle to lead you to another place. Finally the players arrive at the destination where you have a clever way of breaking the news on paper or with some symbol (maybe four small socks, etc). With me it was as simple as a positive pregancy test and my husband still looked baffled. Catch it on video if you can. It is a blast!

So everyone found out by asking her what her shirt said. When I was pregnant the first time my husband had kind of a strange way of telling everyone. When we got together and everyone had drinks without anyone seeing he dropped little party favor size babies in everyones drink. I really like the shirt idea! For me I think the last 2 times I cryed and asked her for advice! (she had 4 kids, and now I do too!) My sister when she got pregnant with her 2nd had the older one wear a "big brother" t-shirt from babies r us (they had lots of sizes). The whole family event nobody noticed. Even the brother in law said "why is he wearing a short sleeved shirt when its so cold outside" obviouslly noticed the shirt, didn't read it. When the day long even was comming to a close my nephew finally went to grandma and said "look shirt". That was it. They all started crying! Get a picture of your kids with their shirts on and frame it in a "baby" frame and send it to your mom. Or send her a care package of baby pees, baby carrots, baby corn, preggo spaghetti sauce, see if she gets the hints. You can even get omaha steaks to deliver baby back ribs.

There are some great ideas on here already, a few to add;
* We found out at Christmas time so on Christmas Day we put our 2.5 year old daughter in a shirt that said "Big Sister" and she gave my mom a gift that was "Baby's First Christmas" bib. We did the same thing for my in-laws but with Thanksgiving.
* Our daughter (2.5 years) told her little friends by sending out a Christmas card, on the back it said "I'm excited to tell you, I'm going to be a big sister in 2008!" We ordered them from Vista Print.
* We gave each grandparent photo frames that said something about "grandparents" for our first child.
* We have a friend who borrowed a double stroller, they put their son on one side and sign on the other that said "coming in Sept 2007."
* We have a friend who put their 18 month old daughter in a "big Sister" t-shirt to tell everyone, like you at a family BBQ, it took them so long to put it all together!! Funny.
* We have a friend who made a video. They had just moved so they were showing their new place. The last room was the kitchen, where there was a "bun in the oven..." CUTE!
Have fun announcing your new addition!

I always love ideas like this! I just had a baby 2 months ago but never surprised anyone with the news but I always thought if I was going too I would get a copy of the ultrasound, any ultrasound Ive had of the baby, make as many copies of it for however many people you are going to surprise then frame them and wrap them up. When it comes time to the surprise, gather everyone around and announce you want to give them all a little someting and have everyone there open their presents at the same time. Hope this helps! P.S.-You can also always have your youngest child wear a Im a big brother/big sister shirt and see who is clever enough to notice!

When we knew our parents would be cooking, we put a "bun in the oven". The Dad was a little slow, but my Mother-in-Law got it right away. She saved a crumb and put it in a scrapbook ;)

Hi C.!

Here are a few more ideas...

*Wrap two "Baby Alive" dolls in Christmas paper. Mail one with a note on it that reads "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL MOTHER'S DAY". I would try to be on the phone with your mom and dad and ask a relative or neighbor to be there with them to record this very special/expensive/elaborate gift opening. Record your in laws opening the other one.

*Another option. This is a true story...I was once at a hair salon getting my hair done (husband/wife owners) when a wacky looking (clown like) "doctor" came running in wearing a white doctors coat, stethescope, etc.. I thought that it must have been someones birthday. He put on a funny little show and had EVERYONE confused but very attentive! After feeling the mans forehead, he then wrote the owner a prescription, handed it to him and it said "Bethany is PREGNANT!". He was floored and and said in a quiet voice to his wife, "Your pregnant?" and the entire, busy salon roared. Pretty cute! You could actually do something similar for your BBQ on Mother's Day. I wish your parents were there too!

Have FUN!!!
