Cleaning Wood Blinds and a Good Mop

Hi Mommas!

We have wood blinds in our house and cleaning them can be an all day chore. Do any of you have any tips and/or suggestions that might make this task easier. I don't use any cleaning products on them, I just use a damp cloth now. They not only get dusty but dirty because they are white.

I also need a new mop. I currently use the swiffer wet jet but am not happy with it. Although the solution smells great! I just don't think it is getting my floor really clean. I have considered the shark. Do any of you use this?

Thanks for all the help and have a great day!

With the Shark, it must depend on the type of flooring you have. I have 18" tile and though I wanted it to be a great cleaning tool, it wasn't. It left my floors with streaks. A total waste of money!!!!!!!!!!!

Bed Bath & Beyond carries a couple of items that may help. One is a micro fiber glove that you can get wet and clean them with. The other is a tong like contraption that has a removable/washable microfiber cleaning cover on it that you can also wet. It reminds me of the clear salad tongs you'd see at a salad bar but with an extra tong so that it can grip the top and bottom of two blind slats at the same time. Neither are super expensive and I like the both. I also would advise you to vacuum your blinds first before using them. It helps cut down on the dirt accumulation on the wet cloth. Oh, and make sure you bring coupons along if you go there. They allow you to use expired ones and they let you use one per item even if it's on clearance or on sale. Good luck!

good thing you are no long using Swiffer, not a safe product. I do use their mop with a microfiber cloth and Melelauce floor cleaner. Works great, and the cloth goes into the wash (saves money that way).

I also use the shark steam mop and LOVE it! I have a two year old and 2 large dogs, so I am mopping a lot. The best deal I found was at costco. they sell the mop and 5 of the replacement pads for $70. In other stores you only get the mop and two pads for around $90. Also, if you mix a solution (I use mr. clean with febreeze and water-follow the dilution on the back of the cleaning solution. You don't want to use too much cleaning solution or the floors will be sticky) in a spray bottle and spray it on the floor as you are mopping, I think it gets the floors a little cleaner and you get the fresh scent. Happy mopping :)

Hello S.,
I had my hsband put some bike hooks up on the patio so i can take my blinds outside to hose off! wiping them seems to smear the dirt! so i take the hose to them! Summer time works best since it is so hot it dries them pretty fast! It does take a while to clean them but it works great! I also have the shark and mine has quit working after 1 year. before that i would just use my carpet cleaner on the tile floors! bit noisy but cleans great and you can just use water or i sometimes add lysol in the spot you put the cleaning solution! Good luck!

For blinds I simply use a feather duster on them every week. Nothing major or fancy in my dusting, just a quick swoosh up and down each side, then turn the blinds and do the other side. We don't seem to have dirt that doesn't dust off? Our blinds are white wood also, but maybe I'm just misunderstanding?

I have the shark and I absolutely love it. It is the greatest thing. I think that it is the only thing that really gets my tile floors clean. I definately recommend it.

I have the shark steamer and I hate it. It works ok for smooth, laminate floors but it's horrible on tile. And, it's pretty expensive and certainly not worth the money. Good luck!

Hi S.!

I was the same way about my floors. We went to Costco and invested in the Shark - a steam mop. I LOVE it! When Im done with the pads, which you will be disgusted at when you actually see how much dirt is on your floor :(, you can throw he pads in the wash and reuse. I think they come with five. It has a little compartment for water, but since I didn't feel that just steamy water was cleaning my floors, I add just a little Mr. Clean with Lavender fabreeze cleaner in. It smells terrific!

S.,

I use the shark and love it! The only downfall is the head replacements are a bit expensive but worth it. Its nice to wash the floor and throw it in the wash and have a clean start for the next time. The power cord I feel is long and it takes no time for it to steam up. My mom bought a different brand she saw on TV and I dont think it works as well.

If you use Basic-H2 (Shaklee) as the solution in that Swiffer Jet, it works great!
