I'm sure it's been asked before and I thought I've read to use vinegar but how do you do it? just run an empty dishwasher with vinegar in the detergent holders? thanks in advance!

On HGTV they suggested putting powdered lemonade in the soap dispenser. They said the citric acid takes care of the hard water stains and is cheap too.

they make dishwasher cleaner, we buy it at walmart. It works pretty well, just run it through an empty cycle.

I have always used the dishwasher cleaner made by Jet Dry. It is a small white bottle that you put upside down in the silverware rack, and then run the dishwasher through its cycle. Incidentally, I just had an issue with my dishwasher (a small plastic piece broke off and jammed the spinning arm) - anyway, the repair man who came recommended using dishwasher cleaner every month because we have such hard water here. Just passing that along FYI! :)

There's a product sold at pool supply stores called Mucuric acid. A plumber recommended that we try it before buying a new dishwasher and it works like a charm. You have to let the dishwasher fill half-way and then you open the door and pour in about 1/4 of a gallon and shut the door and let it run the rest of the way. Be careful not to let the fumes get in our eyes nose or mouth while you pour it in and open a window if you have one while it's running, because the fumes are strong. (You also do this with an empty dishwasher).

We have super hard water where we live and we don't have a water softener. Vinegar doesn't do it for us.

Yes you can use vinegar! I use it all the time. Periodically, I just pour vinegar into the dispensers and run that through. Other times I do put detergent in one dispenser (the one that has the little door that locks) and put vinegar in the other compartment. It really does help and it is ultra cheap too! Good luck!

When I got my new dishwasher the guy installing it said to put a small bowl of cider vinegar in the middle of the top rack and run it on normal cycle. I haven't tried it yet though.
