Not baked on or crusty just heavy filmy looking if that makes any sense. I'm going to try putting vinegar in it and turning it on for awhile. That was one of the two suggestions I found on the Internet. The other was use Oven Cleaner. I'm not sure I want to do that since the food comes in direct contact with it. Any suggestions as to what to do or am I taking the best route possible at this point? THanks!
Since it was what we had right now I tried Dishwasher liquid detergent as Janelle suggested and it worked! Thanks everyone! I will be sure to put water in it and heat it back up right afterwards next time!
You could try scrubbing it with baking soda and a little water. I like to use slow cooker liners when i cook in mine.
dishwasher detergent softens & removes everything! put some in & let it soak.
Mine has started to get that build up too. I've found that SOS pads help remove some of it. I haven't tried anything else to remove it either. I did recently buy those crock pot liners and I've used them two times now and they are quite nice and make for easy clean up! Maybe worth a try after you get yours clean or just to help stop the build up!

Do NOT use oven cleaner in your crock pot! If you washed it with soap and water; it is clean! If you want to clean it after the soap and water just use baking soda. You willl still have a "filmy look" but, the crock pot is clean. Don't use any chemicals. Hope this helps!

Us a Crock Pot Liner next time....prevents the mess and males clean up sooooooooooooooo simple. I think they are made by Reynolds and are found by all the sandwich bags.
Gross, I would never put oven cleaner in something that I was planning to put food in. I totally know what you mean by that film, my crock pot has it too. Here's a good trick. Make a paste with baking soda, some vinegar and water. Spread a layer of it all over the crock put. Let it dry, and then wipe it away with a damp cloth or sponge. This mixture also makes a VERY good NONTOXIC oven cleaner!
A scouring pad can also help.
A friend of mine, who is a former chef, swears by oven cleaner when it comes to this kind of clean up job.
After you are done cooking with your crockpot put water in it and turn it on high for an hour or so. It'll help all the caked stuff come off! Works like a charm! :)
I always let mine soak with hot soapy water, usually overnight. Then I scrub it with an SOS or Brillo pad. Mine are white and I haven't had any buildup.
