Chunky Spit Up

My 2 month old has reflux and is on medication for it (dosage was just upped). However, he still has chunky spit up a few days per week. When he has this, he is pretty cranky. I am breastfeeding and really watch what I eat. Has anyone else experienced this with their baby? If so, what helps?

What can I do next?

Have you brought it up to his doctor? I would think that a baby that's not on solids shouldn't have solids in his spit up. I think I would call the doctor and ask for his suggestions.

I know breastfeeding is best and I tried that route too but we had so many issues with my daughter and colic/reflux we think she's allergic to milk protein or something. She was the same way on reg. formula.

I switched her to Enfamil Nutramigen it's notorious for helping reflux, colic etc. Well it did wonders in less than 24hours. It's already predigested or something so it's easier on them. I don't really understand but I know it was a miracle for us. You could try it.

Chunks are partially digested breastmilk, so he's spitting/throwing up after his stomach has began digesting the breastmilk.

Are you switching breasts while nursing? If you are, stop. I know many many many moms (me included) who insisted their babies had reflux when all it was was too much/forceful letdown and too much foremilk. Its an old wives tale that you need to swtich breasts while nursing.... its not true. Babies need the foremilk to quench their thirst and the hindmilk for the fat to grow. Your milk increases by 20% or so with each pregnancy, so evne if you didn't have this problem with your oldest, you may have it this time around. remember onely one breast per feeding.

Otherwise, smaller meals, keeping him upright, don't let him get to the screaming upset stage, wear him in a sling to comfort him, and consider some alternative ways to help him with reflux... the meds for it are pretty harsh and coudl endup doing more damage than good.

My 10 month old has had reflux since birth and really, spit up a few days per week is not bad at all! My son, on the medication, was still projectile once or twice a day...and the reason it is chunky is because it is partially digested. So all in all, it sounds like the medicine is doing it's job for your son. My son's reflux got better when I switched to formula at three months because I started back to work - so maybe that would help your son? Good luck! I know what you're going through!

I have heard that chiropractic care can CURE acid reflux in infants. Then you wouldn't have to give your son all the medication. It's worth a shot, right?

Hi N.,

My Son had problems with spit up until he was one. The reflux med doesn't stop the spitting up, but he should be getting more relief. I would let your doctor know your son is still experiencing discomfort and they can change the meds. Also, the first thing they did with both my boys when they had reflux and discomfort was to take me off all milk products.

Good luck!

Breastmilk will curdle in the baby's stomach as part of the digestive process. Probably what you're seeing. This happened with my little ones when they would spit up a little while after feeding. Hope this helps.
