Christmas Gift for My Dad's New Wife

My dad recently got married (my mom died two years ago) to a wonderful woman who I like very much. I am struggling to come up with a nice Christmas present for her. I was thinking of trying to find a gift that I could give to them as a couple; maybe doing some sort of theme basket but I really don't have any set ideas. Money is tight so I don't want to spend a lot (I was thinking like only $20-$40). She makes good money and buys a lot of good quality stuff so she really doesn't "need" anything. I would appreciate any ideas you have!

So What Happened?

Wow Ladies all I can say is THANKS! I have so many awesome wonderful ideas. I made a list of a lot of your ideas and I will figure out what I want to do this year (I am not sure yet) and the rest of the items I will keep on the list for future gifts. Now instead of dreading buying something I am looking forward to it!

How about an experience? Take her out to a nice tea (ST. Paul Hotel, ie) with the girls (or the 5 yo.) or just the two of you, or both out to dinner.

Hi
Not sure where you are located but if you have a Hobby Lobby or Michaels, they have tons of items that are so easy to put together for gifts. I was thinking you could get the glass bulbs, could put a picture of them from their wedding in the bulb for their Xmas Tree. If she has everything and money is not a problem for her, I bet your dad and his wife would love something personal and made by your hands. You could also make two other ornaments for them with your daughters pictures in them. If you go to the store, they have kits or just ideas and they spell it out so easily that anyone crafty or not can do it. You can use glitter, beads, paint the inside, personalize with messages, etc. You could then even put them in a glass votive/vase to add an even more complete look rather than wrapping them in a box, etc. and then she could use that as a decoration. OR put them in a basket with tissue and other pretty xmas decor and ornaments with ribbon and stuff. The bulbs and other items are very cheap. Like $2.00 and up. Good Luck!

How about googling poems about step mothers or write one yourself welcoming her into the family and your heart. Put it on beautiful paper and decopodge it on a wooden box and line it with velor or velvet for a jewlery box... or you could frame it. It would be something from the heart and something she could charish as it isn't something she could go out and buy for herself. If you have problems finding a poem send me a message and I could see what I could come up with although I am not a professional when it comes to writing.

How about a fruit basket- Your can make one up with Fruits Mixed nuts and small candies. You can find nice baskets at craft stores or at the Dollar store- This would fit in to what you can afford to spend and add the person touch. I have made these for persons I don't know what to buy them and they just loved it. You do not have to be into crafts to do this. Get ideaa from your local grocery store as they sell fruit baskets every year. Good Luck and let us know what you came up with-

How about a gift certificate for a restauraunt they really like. How about home made gift certificates for meals at your house? Maybe a photography sitting for them? What type of stuff do they enjoy doing together? Since you like her maybe you can do it a type of gift that you all can enjoy together (mini golf, bowling, etc). The best gift you can give any one is the gift of time. It does not have to cost a whole lot. For my nephews one year my sister took them paintballing. It was a gift but also something they could do together.

My in-laws love getting baskets of food - locally made packaged stuff that they can try. If you know they like a certain thing, like grilling or cheese and wine, you could find a local product and put together a basket, or many will have baskets made that you can purchase. It's fun for them because they normally wouldn't buy it, and sometimes the containers are small/sample size so they don't have to have a lot if they end up not liking it.

Think about what you know about them and then you can buy a thoughtful gift or put together a basket. Do they love to drink coffee in the morning? Get some coffees and mugs in a basket for them. How about tea? Do they have a restaurant they love - put together a basket of those types of foods/seasonsing (mexican, italian, burgers, etc.). Does she like to cook - how about an apron and some new utinsels, people always love getting this type of thing. How about a magazine subscription? Sometimes people don't get these for themselves, but would love one related to their favorite hobby/interest.

HAve fun and be thoughtful. They'll love that you thought about them and considered they're interests.

Maybe a spa day for the girls- manicures or pedicures for the two of you for bonding time?? I always get my mom's boyfriend a gift card to a nice restaurant. Not that he can't afford it on his own, it just gives him an Idea of a new or different place to try.

How about a theme basket of Italian Romance? Line a basket with a red and white checkered tablecloth or placemats and napkins, add a jar of specialty store sauce (you can cover the lid with a piece of fabric and ribbon to dress it up, add some shaped pasta, some candles, and a CD of romantic music (I know it's cheesy). You could add in a family photo or '1st year together' Xmas ornament for their tree. Happy Holidays!

I recently married into a family myself. The mother is still alive though. The one thing that I love getting from the kids is a picture they have colored. I have a few of them in frames hanging up in the "art hall" I call it, the hall that leads to the bedrooms. They did a picture with all of us. They understand who I am and that they are loved by me.
The crazy thing about this story my mom married a man also married a man two years after my dad died, they to have everything they could want, well bigger is what her husband wants (toys). They always enjoy eating out so we always get them a giftcard to different places, or maybe a card that would be a girls day out so you can all get to know each other better.

Every year for my mom we get a calendar made of my kids' photos. They are really easy to do, and it's a HUGE hit. My parents love them.
www.snapfish.com and www.walgreens.com both do calendars. You can customize it however you want, add special family dates and birthdays and anniversaries, etc. i personally think it would also feel very "welcome to the family" to include photos of her, or their wedding, whatever you'd like. It's the perfect gift for grandparents.
(Snapfish has LOTS of awesome gift ideas, it's worth digging around on their site. All customizes, and unlike anything your new stepmom could buy on her own.)

I love the glass coaster set that you can slide pictures in the back. I have a set with my kids and each of the grandparents have been given a set. I found sets at dept stores or I'm sure you can find them online. The glass coasters are 4 in a pack and about $15. Print off 4 cute pics of the kids, slide the pics behind the glass- they're a great gift.

You could also get them a nice photo album for their new life together. There are some at craft stores that can be personalized with names and such. Many larger craft stores, like Hobby Lobby and Michaels, have on line coupons or coupons in the paper for 40% or 50% off one item. I do that for a lot of presents.

Hi M.! What I did last year for my parents and inlaws was a movie basket. I bought 2 red and white striped popcorn containers from Target (in the dollar section), a box of microwave popcorn, a movie (cheap on Black Friday), and a throw blanket (also cheap on Black Friday). It was a HIT! I think I spent around $25.00 on each one.
Good luck!

Good morning, M.! First off, congratulations to your dad! How about a basket with a nice selection of cards (homemade ones would be great - from you and the grandkids) with a calendar with important dates and a book of stamps? Be sure to ask her for the important dates in her life so you can get them on your calendar too and ackowledge those dates to make her feel a part of the family.
