Other than the traditional turkey/dressing etc...what would make for a good Christmas Dinner?
Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions. Ok it's almost 7am Christmas Eve and getting ready to get out in the maddness at the grocery store. We received a spiral ham as a gift so we will be having that. My daugher requested some homemade mac/cheese. So along w/those I think I'll do baked beans, ribs and green beens (or some type of greens like collards/cabbage) and buttered rolls. French Vanilla White Chocolate cake (trying for the first time), pie (sweet potato/pecan) and maybe a peach cobble w/ice cream. I love that Sierra Mist Cranberry soda and a friend of mine gave me two bottles as a gift. I couldn't find it any where this year...thanks girl!
A rib roast! Roasted or mashed potatoes, steamed squashes, Good salad.
We sometimes eat Mexican Food.

My inlaws make
Clam Chowder and serve it with Crusty Bread and a salad.
Our Christmas dinner is always Prime Rib roast with oven roasted potatoes, green beans, dinner rolls and a few other "sides" that my mom wants to try that year.
It's a great alternative to turkey again!
We are having prime rib roast, baked potatoes, corn on the cob, green beans, salad, and rolls.
We wanted to do something different :).
The kids and I will make spinach dip, veggies and dip, and maybe one more appetizer.
We're also make 4 different kinds of cookies and an applesauce spice cake.
Here's our menu:
Roast leg of lamb with red wine reduction
Yorkshire puddings
Boiled red potatoes with rosemary
Roasted vegetables (onions, carrots, parsnips, fennel)
Sauteed green beans
Cranberry relish
We are doing fondue this year. :) We often will do ham with scalloped potatoes, green beans, rolls, carrots, salad. On Christmas Eve, we always have Beef Stroganoff.

Gumbo is our traditional Christmas Eve dinner. For Christmas day: this year we're taking turns with a yucky cold, and I'm not feeling too spry, so Honeybaked Ham is going to be my friend. We'll just have Pillsbury orange cinnamon rolls and cocoa for breakfast. For a "snacking" kind of lunch we'll have a tray of summer sausage and cheeses (dubliner, cheshire, pepper jack on some great crackers), some sliced baguettes with a warm spinach artichoke dip, and a few cookies around. For dinner we'll do ham, macaroni and cheese for the boys, mashed potatoes and gravy for hubby, spinach madeline, steamed green beans, a little cranberry sauce, spiced apples, and some rolls. For dessert: mince pie and leftover cheesecake with sliced strawberries on the side. (The cheesecake will be leftovers from Jeremy's birthday, on Friday).
It is NOT a low fat week in our house. We'll pay penance next week....until NYE comes around. :D
We are having a spiral sliced ham, home made mac and cheese (the kind with jalapeno's, corn and bacon along w/noodles and cheese) , baked beans and assorted appetizers.
We have a huge family party on Christmas Eve and have chili, beans, tortillas, chips, etc. We also have ham for the few people who don't eat chili. Then on Christmas Day it's just the four of us and we eat leftovers. :)
It's a good Texas meal, and since you're in Texas it might appeal to you.
I know several people who serve BBQ, too, another good Texas meal. ;)

Which makes me reeeeally strange up here.... but it's one of my favorite memories of living outside of New Orleans. And reading Gaston the Green Nosed Aligator!!!

Great ideas here so far! I always make a S. brunch (simple) to start and this year it will be green chili strata, sausage, fresh berries and something we call Lulu bread (my stepmother makes it and sends it but it's like banana bread with cherries and nuts, delicious).
Mid day we'll have some cheese fondue.
For Christmas dinner we'll have crown rack of lamb with side dishes. Last year I bought some beautiful small steaks and they were delicious.
Regardless, some of the most fun Christmas Eves I remember were in S. Louisiana with a Louisiana shrimp or crab boil, spread out on newspapers ands with paper plates! Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive to be memorable and fun!
