I am thinking ahead of what kind of photo to take for our photo christmas card. Last year my son was in an elf hat sitting in front of a Christmas tree. Does anyone have any interesting/creative ideas? He will be 18 months old when I take the picture.

Thanks!

Pinterest has some cute ones. Like a baby tangled up in christmas lights.

You could sit him in a really big wrapped box like he is the present. theres more i've seen but i can't remember off the top of my head I'll add more if i think of it.

a cute pict of him in the snow would be sweet too.

Him in a Santa hat?

When my daughter was that little we had a picture of her sitting on a rocking horse in front of the christmas tree.

My daughter is 17. I 'ce always sent a card with a collage of pics of her throughout the year.

This year will be big since she's a Senior!

My favorite card we did was before we had kids, but we tried taking pics with our (rowdy) dog. We ended up with a collage of the "outtakes" and said something like "Oh well, we tried... Have a Merry Christmas anyway!". We have friends who did something similar with their two little boys. The silly pictures, or ones where someone was falling over laughing made it onto the card, and the formal, posed pictures didn't. I would think with an 18-month old, you could let him have fun getting tangled in a strand of lights, or wrapping paper, or something like that. Good luck!

I was so focused on trying to get the perfect Christmas card photo when my son was that age. It was ridiculous. I had the outfit picked out. Then he had a diaper leak. Picture got post-poned. Every year it seemed like something made my perfect idea of the perfect Christmas card photo always so difficult to achieve. Someone didn't save the planned outfit and it was dirty. Our son had an accident. The cat wouldn't join our photo.

On our fourth Christmas, after my son was born, the unthinkable happened. We all got terribly sick at the end of November when we usually did the photo, so it got post-poned until the first weekend in December. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Laundry had piled up when we were all sick, so the outfits I had planned for us to wear for the card ended up in the dirty laundry instead. I had wanted us to only wear Christmas colors for the photo. Instead, we wore what was available from our closet. I got more compliments on that Christmas card than any of my prior attempts at having the perfect card. It looked natural. It wasn't planned perfection.

After that year, it has been choose your favorite clothes to wear for the photo and let's just have fun taking a photo. We usually take our main photo for our Christmas card gathered around the Christmas tree. We also always include a photo of our Nativity Scene, with a scriptural quote. My favorite scripture to include is Isaiah 9:6. Then, we include two or three of our favorite snapshots from that year.

We live in Japan now, and in addition to sending Christmas cards, my family sends out New Year's cards as well. We usually make a collage of about 7-9 photos on the card with one of the whole family as the central focus. The photos highlight our year, and we include a brief description of our wonderful (and sometimes trying) year. You could do the collage thing for a Christmas card as well.

My advice is to make it natural. It is so much easier, and your friends and family will probably love seeing what really happened versus the planned perfect image. The around the Christmas tree theme and Nativity Scene and scripture make it like a tradition, yet the snapshots make it unique to each year. I really like how our past few years have turned out. It's fun to see how different our tree looks every year too. Good luck and remember that sharing our love with others is the greatest gift. It doesn't really matter if that card is planned perfection. It will be perfect if you are yourselves.

I did one with my son and a Santa hat.He also had a green/red outfit on. I just let him play with it, or have it on, and try to take it off. Taking photos nonstop. I picked out 4 really good shots and placed them on a photo card. I used Snapfish . It came out really cute.

my all-time fav was my niece/nephew, leaning in to kiss each other....with lit white lights tangled all around them. It was beautifully awesome. I think they were about 6 & 10.

They do photo cards each year, & I actually prefer the ones shot in nature over posed shots. Have fun & enjoy

18 months olds are full of energy and activity, try to capture some of that zeal. Let him shred wrapping paper, make a mess of bows and ribbons, get tangled up in christmas lights, surround him in unbreakable christmas bauble, get him with a string of popcorn, or cranberries, or whatever else, surround him with wrapped presents. Have him in and among a nativity scene.
Put angel wings and a halo on him, a santa hat, antlers.
Sit him in a christmas wreath.
Put a wreath round his neck.
have him reaching up for a kiss under mistletoe, or blowing a kiss.
catch him trying to catch bubbles in lieu of snow in front of a white background.
with a cup of cocoa and a messy mouth.
making music with jingle bells.
as a little drummer boy.
asleep with a caption of "wishing you a silent night".
With a bunch of lamps, or flashlights, "may your days be merry and bright"
lining up cars- lining up a great new year.
biting into a gingerbread man.

There are a lot of cute X-mas ideas you can set up with props around your home. Just make sure you've got strong light, that the house is tidy, and that you take a silly number of pictures because with little ones you'll be lucky to get a few good shots.

Ours is an october baby, the first pic was him naked with a santa hat on. The second year, he was sat on a red rocking moose in front of presents. This year, we'll have a shot of him surrounded by x-mas baubles.

Good luck to you and yours,
F. B.
