Hi T.,
I am not responding to your question, I have a question for you. I am new to Underwood and I don't know many people. I have four kids a 10 year old boy, a 7 year old boy, a 3 year old boy, and a 21 month girl. We are done having kids let me tell yeah. My question is does your daughter babysit or know anyone who does? Thank you for any help you can give me.

My great uncle used to have a chinchilla farm. They are not very nice. They bite. Granted, he wasn't raising them as pets... they became coats :( but he and his daughters treated them well, and they were still mean. The ones at Petco are bitey too - and they are raised to be pets. They're cute, soft little buggers, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Hi T.,

We had one at the school I went to for Small Animal Services. It was abandoned and adopted by the vet tech program. They aren't very nice and cuddly like they seem. They're very cute, but other than that, they generally will just stay in their cages and enjoy dust baths. If you want a "pet" of the chinchilla type, go for a bunny. They can be litter trained, are usually sweet (if you get them from a good breeder who has handled them) and can roam free around the house like a cat after their litter trained. And they're fun and cute. Just make sure you read up on them as they get urinary tract infections very easily and it can be deadly to them. And don't feed them alfalfa and pellets - they're full of calcium which causes the UTI's.

Here's a link to vets in each state who subscribe and care for rabbits http://www.rabbit.org/care/vets.html

ASPCA Website about rabbit care http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pets_rabbit...

I'd personally, steer clear of a chinchilla especially with kids, and opt for a rabbit.

I'd do some research before you get it. My son is wanting a pet for his birthday & I'm wanting another pet. Right now I'm researching the pets I'm thinking about before I chose one. Here's what pets I'm looking at:

dog
ferret
guinea pig
chinchilla

Hi T.! I had a male chinchilla when I was growing up. They require ALOT of gear and special care. Mine got out a time or two and talk about a workout trying to catch him! They can run so fast that they can run sideways up the wall!! They also live a VERY LONG TIME, so this is a very long commitment you are making to this animal. I noticed when I got older and paid less attention to him he got very angry and would bite when anyone tried to hold him. I don't think they are a good pet for kids because they are very fragile and strong. They also can't get wet. Their coat is so dense that they can get a fungus on their skin if they get wet. So you have to give them a lava dust bath that they roll in and it drys the oil in their coat. It's actually very cute to watch. They are a amazing little critter, but they require alot of time, money, and attention for them to be a wonderful pet. I hope this info is helpful.
