Children's Clothing Needs

Last week there was a question about items that mommas like to have for children and things that were not needed somewhere along the line I misplaced the question. I have a chance to make items and put them in a local store for children. What things would you have liked to have gotten or would have used from newborn to 5? Thanks. So far I have made up pillowcase dresses, nursing pads (cotton/washable), burp clothes several sizes, bibs and have considered bedding blankets/sheets. At one time I had thought about making coth diapers but there are so many types out there. Your ideas will be greatly appreciated as I am an older mom/grandma and there are a lot of new things on the market from when my kids were young. You mommas rock.

Have you ever thought of having a store on Etsy?
www.etsy.com

It is for crafts people and artisans to sell their wares.
VERY nice site and VERY good place to sell things.
I have bought many things from there.
Quality things.

Another idea: what about "sleep sacks" or swaddling type blankets?

I agree about nursing covers. I found a free template for nursing covers online. I am no seamstress, but it would be nice to have some non-flashy somewhat fashionable nursing covers out there. The ones I saw when I was pregnant were cheaply made and made of silky bright fabric. Hello I don't want to bring attention to me! Some more subtle color would be nice. Pale greens perhaps, so for a boy or a girl, or to match mom's clothes better. The one I bought at a craft-store was hand-made and the gal even sewed a little pocket in there, I guess for my nursing pad or for a washcloth in case you needed it.

I like onesies that say funny things on them. Or cute things. Like "Born in April" or "Daddy did my hair."

One very hard thing to find that you might consider making are toddler bedding items. You can go anywhere to find a fitted sheet for your crib mattress, but you cannot find a flat sheet that fits the beds. I bought a twin sheet and cut it and seamed it. I much rather would have bought one ready to go that matched the fitted sheet. Same for mini pillows and pillow cases. My 92 yr old grandma made my 3 yr old son a pillow and two pillow cases. PM me if you want the dimensions. He loves the pillow and I love it too. It doesn't fluff up on his face. Unfortunately, the pillow cases aren't made with very soft material. She did an aplique on one pillow which makes the pillow more rough right on his face. :(

A lot of those sound really good for really little ones - babies. Thinking of my 3 year old, fashionable little shirts and/or dresses would interest me. Little headbands/hats with cute flowers would be interesting. My 3 yr old loves jewelry. I don't know if that is something you are able to do (or if that is even along the lines of what you're asking). I'm too tired! I can't think of anything else at the moment...except little sundresses. Love those. Oh, and those little bolero jacket things. Those look cute with dresses and some clothes.

Nursing covers were hard to find with my first one and you still can't find many locally, just on etsy. I have boys and it is hard to find anything homemade for them, it is mostly little girl stuff. Some items I have looked for but can't find at homemade stores are flannel p.j. pants for winter and shorts in the summer.

Sleep sacks, I wish i could find them big enough for my 29 month old who weighs 28 lbs, nursing covers, I so wish I'd had cute ones, I just used receiving blankets, and cute blankets for cribs and toddler beds.

Non diaper bag looking diaper bags!

My mom makes quilted bags and they FLY out of stock.

Also, I had someone make & give me two blankets made out of very thin material...almost like t-shirt soft stretch knit/cotton. They were my FAVORITE baby blankets of all because they were light for summer and not bulky. I've never seen them in stores.

make swaddle me's they are very simple, and you can use valcro to fasten.

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=swaddl...

make with left over flannel sheeting or cotton for summer

you can make over sized swaddle blankets - 45 x 45 inches. The ones in the stores are waaaay to small and does not last. they are only 30 x 30

make wash cloths from towels. wrap matching colors in a bundle with some ribbon.

Make taggy blankies. approx 20 x 20 inch squares, then sew labels or different textured ribbons on the edges.

pillow cases with taggies also works. You pin the ribbon sticking out like a tag, then sew the two pieces of fabric together.

make over sized pillows, kids love to flop on huge pillows scattered on the floor. Make bright fun colors!

hoody towels - use an adult towel, cut the top off and make a triangle hoody, sew back on. Sure you can find a pattern online somewhere

make cute tote bags from scrap fabric

diaper bags are always adorable and are now more fashionable
monogrammed shirts for little ones, like toddlers. you can add cute little things onto socks
hair bows are pretty popular too
you can add lace, ribbons, etc to little girl's shirts
add bows to barretts
maybe even necklaces made with ribbon, etc
if you have a good printer, you can create cute bag tags with monograms for the diaper bags
you can make thank you cards or invitations too
I use small cards, business card size, that say "a gift from..." and my child's name. I put them on the gifts that my children give at bday parties, it is cuter and a lot cheaper than buying a card.
