Yup. And have you noticed how many kids have peanut allergies? I am 34, and don't ever recall seeing as many obese children or children with fatal food allergies as I do now. My friend sent me this video (she has 2 small boys as well) and it made so much sense to me. It is a bit long, but watch it. I am doing the Leake's family raw food diet now - although I've always tried to be organic.

Seriously, watch it. I was so impressed and moved with this!

Check out this web site its called "Super Kids Nutrition"
Yes I saw the information you are refering to. Unfortuntately many people dont have their kids play outside. Many kids eat a diet of processed food and sugary type drinks and snacks.
I personally dont have a problem with cookies. I always offer fresh cut veggies or fruit first. We do have sweets maybe once or twice a week after dinner. 1-2 cookies each after they eat a healthy dinner.
Take a family bike ride after you start a week or so it will just become second nature to exerise as a family together.

I am an obese mother and do everything in my power to make sure that my children are not overweight. So far so good. I know I need to take better care of myself and have started doing so, but isn't it funny that I have been taking GREAT care of my kids for the past 9 years? They always get their fruits and veggies because I don't want them to have to face what I have been facing all my life. It pisses me off when I see obese kids, and I see them all the time, because an obese kid means a bad parent (IMHO)

Go to a mall or somewhere else that families congregate, and you'll see obesity, at all ages. My ex-husband is obese and I'm concerned about his influence on our daughter. And I haven't seen any low-fat menus at our school, either.

We will soon see our nation's life expectancy drop, as the effects of increasing diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease cause this next generation to die younger than before.

I was an obese child (like 285pds before I turned 18) and turned into and adult with an eating disorder and a very warped view on thinness. My family is very into food. They can turn any conversation into something about food. i don't want my kids growing up having the same problems I have had, and try to make sure my son has plenty of healthy options, but at the same time letting him have the occasional cookie so he learns about treats in moderation.

Last year when my son had his 7th grade physical the pediatrician ordered his first cholesterol screening. The Pedi was shocked when my son's cholesterol came back with in normal limits. I was shocked that the pediatrician would be shocked that a pre-teens cholesterol was normal!

I agree, I've also been contemplating the epidemic of peanut allergies as well.

"Obese children have as much plaque in their neck arteries as middle-aged adults, according to a study presented this week at the American Heart Association meeting in New Orleans."

"High blood pressure and high cholesterol, which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). In one study, 70% of obese children had at least one CVD risk factor, and 39% had two or more."

"Approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese. 1 of 7 low-income, preschool-aged children is obese. "

I didnt know but im not surprised, just look at kids meals and menus and what they serve in school.

Food is so important and america needs reform. The best way to protest is what you spend your money on. Supply and demand control the world. Im not going to buy my kids "crappy" meals and im going to pack their lunches myself.

I just heard somewhere that it's predicted that this generation of children will not outlive our generation, so they are predicted to die younger than we will due to obesity. It's a very scary statistic and thankfully my boys are very active. I do feel good that the company I work with is working to reduce obesity in adults and children. Both my husband and I have lost weight recently and I want our kids to see that we're setting a good example for them.

Great comments everyone!

I read somewhere that childhood obesity appears to finally be leveling off, albeit still at very high levels, but at least it doesn't seem to be endlessly increasing.

For anyone who is interested, including Beth and Christy P. -- I have attached links to a number childhood obesity studies/articles/resources from the American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, the New York Times, US Department of Health & Human Services-National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, and the Center for Disease Control.

That is so disheartening. Even kids who are not obese can be very unhealthy due to bad diets and lack of exercise. I get irritated by all the commercials now that are touting their foods "now" being natural or simple. WHY did we get away from that in the first place? It's like everyone stopped caring and we all bought the fake, cheap, easy food or ate at the fast food places. I'm glad to see people paying attention now and hopefully parents can help turn things around. I see a lot of kids now teaching their parents about health and nutrition since its become taught more in schools. It's also hard to get past the food people in poverty are exposed to. A major food bank in my area is now contracting to get more and more fresh produce, lower sodium foods (ditching the pasta and noodle dinners), beans, and whole grains. They even provide recipes for pantries to hand out with the foods. But, then there's the battle of getting the recipients to eat this healthier food as well and not see it go out in the trash or come back to the pantry as a donation. It's been about convenience for us for too long and we really let things get out of hand.
