My dd didn't weigh 20 lbs until 18 months....just barely weighed 20 lbs finally! I was always worried and now i look back 6 months at pics and videos and can see what a little chunker she was. She is just small....and it's what makes them so darn cute : 0

I've never had that with my kids, but have friends whose children were like that. Compared to other average sized kids, probably, but honestly I wouldn't worry about it because every body's is different.

My son was a peanut. When he was 24 months he was only 22 pounds. Large bowling ball!! 5th percentile in height and off the chart low in weight. Now he's in the 40th percentile. There are online height/weight charts that you might want to check out.

Well it depends on your child's build. My daughter only weighed 20lbs by 14 months. She still has a thin build, all legs.As long as she eats well, I wouldn't worry about her weight. Most toddlers are grazers, they only have time for running around. Hope this helps!

My son just turned one year and he weighs 21 pounds. I think 17 pounds may be at the small end of the normal range. However, I wouldn't worry much about it if she eats and is otherwise healthy. I know someone with a two year daughter who has been diagnosed with failure to thrive. She barely weighs 20 punds. She's healthy, just small.

I wouldn't be too worried. Some babies are just small. Our daughter was in the 16 pound range from 8 months to 11.5 months, and she just now at 11.5 months is over 17 pounds. As long as she is developing properly, and the Doctors don't seem concerned I wouldn't worry. Our daughter has been in the 15th percentile for weight since she was a month old (she was in the 5th percentile for full term babies when she was born). Some babies just tend to be smaller, look at it this way, you can use the same outfits for longer stretches of time!

She is very small. The pediatrician can confirm if her brain growth is proper - that is what is important. If she does not eat well, you need to consider her diet - remove milk and wheat and be sure she is eating lots of high quality veggies, fruits, meats, rice, etc. If she has eating problems, you should begin by reading dietary changes to heal digestive problems. Get the graph that begins at birth and is marked at each well check. It shows her weight, length and head circumference. If it falls within the shaded range her growth is normal. If it is outside that range, see a developmental pediatrician. If you are in Georgia, take her to public health for a screening by Babies Can't Wait. Outside Georgia research for the state provider of IDEA Part C services for infants and toddlers. A great website is www.zerotothree.org.

you can chart her as others have said but dont get to wrapped up in it. all kids are different. my son grew very slowly the first year he was 9 lb 2 oz baby at birth so i think everyone expected him to grow big and fast. he was only 10th % for weight at his year check up and by 18 months he was 75th % the Dr wasn't very concerned but everyone else kept making comments about his low weight. i didn't worry much because he was eating and meeting all his milestones. and then he jumped right up the scale in his own time :) i think she will be fine kids are all different. my nephew is 8 and he is at least 8 inches taller then some of the girls in his class. i was always tall in school but now people have caught up to me. my dad was still 5'7 in high school and by the time he was 19 he was 6'2 people grow how they should when they should. if she is fine on other aspects then don't worry and enjoy your "little" girl :)

She does sound small but every child is different. My Daughter was only 19lbs at 1yr old but my son hit 20lbs at 9months old! Look back on family history on your side and her daddy's. Were you both small babies like that too?? If so, the not much to worry about, it's probably genetic. If not, then you need to work with the Dr's to find out why. It will require some testing for nutrition absorption and what not, but better to find out if there is a problem now than later.

Good luck

My daughter is 15 months and weighs 18 pounds. As long as she is roughly on the same growth curve she has been on for the last 6-8 months, she is eating/active, and making normal milestones I wouldn't stress. My daughter is apparently tiny despite me being 5'6" and my husband is 6'4".

Hope that helps!
Best wishes,

The statistics that Dr's use are just for guidelines , no-one can say exactly how heavy or tall a child should be at a certain age , it all depends on there genetic make up. My middle daughter weighed 20lb as 18 months , she is 4 yrs old now and still only weighs 33lb but is very tall (mom and dad both tall) , all you need to take into consideration is that she is gaining weight and getting taller , and use yours , your husbands and other close family members builds as a guide and not the Dr's check list or other peoples kids.

Hope this helps

My daughter weighed 18 lbs. 14 oz. when she was 12 months old. Her pediatrician didn't say anything about her weight, I guess that it was average. Your daughter should be eating table food and drinking milk. I hope that this helps.

Every single one of my five children weighed 18 lbs at their first year checkup. Even now my almost 4 yo weighs 25 lbs. But they are all healthy so I wouldn't worry about it.

Your pediatrician should be charting her, and if she is "thriving" she'll stay on the same growth "trajectory" irregardless of how she compares to other children.

For example, my daughter was 40-50th percentile in weight the entire tracking. She didn't reach 20 lbs until she was around 15 mos. My friend's daughter was also breastfed but was in the negative 5-25% her entire tracking. Both kids healthy.

Conversely, my son was also breastfed, on the same percentiles, but reached 20 lbs at 10 mos...Here's a good link for comparative between breast and formula growth charts.

It was such a drag to wait and change her seat forward:) Hope this helps:)

What does her doctor say about her weight? A lot of time we think our child is little/big for their age and they are really within the proper range. I say that b/c my son is 6 1/2 months & is 19lbs (and I just started him on solids last week) but he is not over weight he is just in the upper percentile for his age.

If she is eating well and is active and her doctor says everything is fine I would not be concerned.

We have to remember that everybody is not the same and I should not think that my son is over weight b/c he weighs more than some kids his age and you should not think that your daughter is under weight b/c she is smaller than kids her age.

I hope this was helpful.
