I'm looking to buy a tea set for a nine year old girl and I didn't realize how tiny so many of them are. Any advice on whether ceramic or porcelain is better? Are your teacups really tiny (holding 2 oz or less), or do you have cups that hold more like 3-4 oz? What is most popular for nine year old girls?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the info. Glad to know the small tea sets (not the miniature ones) are actually the right size. I saw a bunch of pretty ones on some different sites, but just wasn't sure.

This is also for the adopt-a-family program (you may have seen my PS3 post below this one). The nine year old girl said a tea set was her "dream item," so I'd like to get her one, whether she plans to use it or display it... I guess I'll never know. : ) She did also request dolls and barbies, so maybe she is still into that type of play regardless of her age. My own daughter is only five and she is all about pretend play with the dolls - I hope it lasts several more years!

My daughter has two sets, one very tiny (doesn't hold an ounce) and the other holds about 2 ounces. They are both porcelain and were gifts from years ago.

The set she used the most is plastic and holds about 4 to 5 ounces. I have not seen any porcelain tea sets in years so maybe check eBay or an antique store.

Here is a cute one and not expensive.

There seems to be a lot of tea set choices available.
Some are affordable, sturdy and basic while others are fancy and collectible (expensive and delicate) and not really meant to be played with.
Most of the time 'tea' is pretend or maybe just water - since you don't want kids spilling a lot - small volume is pretty normal.

no help as i haven't seen one in years, but i love that little girls still want to have tea parties. and that there are sets out there that AREN'T made of plastic.
i was such a tomboy that i had very few dolls or girlie things, but man, did i love my tea set. mine was porcelain, beautiful and dainty, but it was big enough to hold actual 'tea' (sugar water) and cookies.
i hope you can find a delightful one for your girl.

We have a couple of sets given to us so can't say where they were purchased dorm but porcelain is bigger hit here, we have both. Especially for older kids. We have a tiny set that was an antique like actual china set they mostly arrange and set up it's too small to use. So I'd go bigger depending on how they would play with it. Our larger set they actually fill with water and drink from for tea parties.

A tea set that is breakable is a nice toy to set up and never use. I don't know of any kids over age 3 or 4 that would play with a tea set though. Are you sure she wants one? I always think of those as something mommy and daddy play with them and their stuffed animals when they're very young.

Does she like to play with miniatures or does she want a real tea set? IMO, get espresso cups and plates and give her a "real" set. WalMart also sells a colorful tea set that is bigger than average. Just google for it. I wouldn't buy anything delicate for real play.
