Child Reverted Back to Wetting Pants

My 3 yr old has been potty trained for months now. However, the past week she has barely used the toilet. I'm going through 5-7 pairs of panties a day! I don't understand why she is doing this all of a sudden. Can somebody please give me some advice on what to do. I've never seen this happen before, especially after a child has been potty trained as long as she has! I'm so confused.
Thank you in advance for your help.

P.S. This is only happening at home, not out in public or at other houses. I've tried putting her back on schedule of going every hour, but it is not working.

When my children were in preschool, the teachers would tell us moms that:
1) the children are busy and forget, so bring extra clothing( I think this has something to do with the weather too)
2) when the child is at home, go back to reminding every 30 - 45 minutes to make a bathroom trip so there are no accidents
I hope this helps!

It sounds like your daughter is wanting some attention. Do you have a new child, have you moved, or has there been some change in your family life? These can start some of these. Also you might need to have her checked for some kind of infection.
Good luck.

Take her to the doctor to make sure she doesn't have an infection. My daughter went through this earlier in the year and I thought it was due to other stress/changes in her life, but she had an infection! We've been fighting these all year now b/c I feel like we waited too long the first time to take her to the doc and there was a little damage to her bladder that is taking time to heal. It definitely could be something else, but make sure it isn't this.. Good Luck!! =)

I wouldn't say it is unusual for children to "backtrack" so to speak over potty training. Don't be alarmed.

Look at the events before the past week. Has anything significant happened or changed? Something stressful might be at the root of her regression.

I have a 7-yr-old boy who went for months without wetting the bed at night. When he started wetting the bed again, usually because he didn't go to the bathroom "one more time" before falling asleep, and when I got tired of changing and washing sheets, this is what I did. I went to the store and bought a package of "pull-ups" for bigger kids (I found "disposable pants for 85-125 lbs kids!).

Then I had him wear his new "nighttime underwear". He kind of had fun the first night but complained that they itched and weren't comfortable. Well, I then gave him a choice. Either he went to the bathroom (and "at least tried") right before bedtime or he put on one of the "new nighttime underwear". I even let him wear his regular underwear underneath (since it was the sheets I didn't want to get wet!). Then, I would let him resume wearing just his underwear at night. When he wet the bed again, I told him he had to wear the "new nighttime underwear". That would last a night and he hasn't wet the bed again.

I'm not saying it would be that quick for you and your girl but it's something you might try.

From what I've heard, you should emphasize that this isn't a big deal. Make it matter-of-fact and keep the rules simple.

After that advice, take what you think could work for you and your child and leave the rest! Follow your heart and mothering instincts!

Good luck!

We just went throught this same thing a few weeks ago! Mine is 27 months and had been potty trained for 2 months. It was very difficult to handle at first because I was so used to her not having accidents. We had no changes and I couldn't figure out what was causing the difference. The only thing I could think might have been the cause is that she is wearing jeans more now and she cannot get them off herself. Maybe she just felt overwhelmed and didn't know what to do. I don't know, but here's how I handled it and it worked: I just remained really calm. When there was an accident, we cleaned it up quickly and took her to sit on the potty anyway. We reminded her that she goes in the potty and not on the floor. I didn't shame her and I tried really hard to not get upset or say anything about it. We started taking her to the potty every hour again and when she went, we brought on the celebration. We went back to stickers and dancing. It worked and she is back to no accidents at all.

My first advice is take her to the pediatrician for a checkup make sure there aren't any physical health issues causing this to happen; there could many explanations for this, some extremely simple, others more critical.

I would take her to the doctor, there is a good possibility that she has a UTI (urinary tract infection). This is a common age for girls to get those and this is one of the first symptoms...if it goes on for a few days she may develop a fever as the infection moves up into her kidneys. If a UTI is the problem, an antibiotic will solve your problem quickly.

She may have a UTI. Take her to the doc to rule this out first.

Talk to her about it. It will be a reminder to her.

Watch to see if she is absorbed in a task when it happens.

Watch for an infection.

Set a timer to remind her to try and go. Reset it after she has tried to go.
