I am having a big problem with my son. He is not eating like he did a couple of weeks ago. He started a preschool two days a week at the first of the month and the first week went well. Well, the next week he got sick and had Croup. Well he is better now but he is refusing to eat. He went to school today and they said he was upset most of the day and didn't eat there either. I just don't know what to do. This has been going on since Saturday. I first thought it was the meds he was taking but those ended on friday. I am just hoping someone might have an idea or should I take hime back to the docter? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank You

after meds, or after being sick, appitite sometimes isn't up to par for a few days, and he may just not feel good yet, just getting over being sick. Also after being sick they may have a day or two of wanting to be with you, so that could of been part of the upset at school.

when it comes to our children's health why take chances? Call your peidatrician and tell them what is going on. If they are worth their money they will be glad to talk to and give you advice WITHOUT an office visit unless they think there is something more serious wrong that needs an exam. Even then if it is related to the previous visit your insurance should NOT be charges and neither should you.

Hello L.,

he might still have an upset stomach. is he drinking enough? or maybe he's drinking too much and it's ruining his appetite. it might take a few days for his apetite to come back. if he's allergic to ragweeds, they're kind of high right now and he might have drainage into his stomach. depending on what medication he was on...he could still have residual effects. follow your instinct. if you think he needs to go back to the doctor, take him. I hope he is feeling better. Good luck! ~C.~

Hey L. my name is Pen I had a son with eating issues when he was very young. One thing you might try that will get vitamins down him is to get him some pedi-sure. It comes in several flavors. The doc said it was good when he wouldn't eat and after drinking some for a few days he would start eating again. Hope I have given some help. God bless

Talking to his doctor may be what you need to do. However, could it be that he is constipated? I know my son does not eat when he is constipated on occasion. If he is constipated maybe trying some foods that help with digestion. More vegie related or fruit related items. Get him foods he likes to eat and allow him to pick his foods out at the store. Making him part of the process. He might be more apt to eat especially at daycare.

Another thing... I know my son's doctor told me when my son was younger that he will eat when he is hungry and not to sweat it. I noticed the older he gets the more truth to this there is. That was hard to hear then, but you know I think the man was pretty smart. My son has never been under weight or over weight except at birth. LOL! He was 10 llbs. He's pretty healthy.

One last thing I would make sure he has lots of liquid if he isn't eating. Maybe protein shakes and of course lots of water.

Good luck...to rest your mind though I would call the doctor and talk to the nurse or the doctor about your concerns.

L.,
My son recently started preschool too - and I think he too had something similar to the croup (or at least his cough resembled such). After 3-5 days, he is now over it - but still has not gotten his full appetite back yet. I think that is very typical considering. Give him time, he will regain his appetite. My son didn't take anything to get over whatever virus he had; perhaps some of the meds he was/is on is contributing to the loss of appetite. As another post said, he will not starve himself, so try not to worry too much.....

Sounds like you have gotten some good advice. One thing I want to add is, he will get hungry and want to eat soon. Be sure to have healthy food ready for him when he does. His blood sugar is going to be low, so he may demand candy or junkie snacks like little debbies or a cookie. Don't give in to that. Offer him a banana, piece of toast, or maybe apple sauce. Something that won't hit an empty little tummy like a ton of bricks. You don't want an upset tummy on top of all of this. His little brain will not let him starve himself, so just go on with normal routine and he will eat. When you leave the house, be prepared with a wholesome snack. My son, at 9, still goes through appetite ups and downs.

Kids go through eating spurts along with their growth spurts. Also starting school is a big change for kids and they feel a bit out of control. Eating is one of the few things a three year old can control in their life. Once he gets settled into his new routine his eating habits will return. Just be glad he isn't expressing his control in the form of potty training regression. Mine refuses to go poop on the potty and he will hold it all day at school. Then he goes shortly after getting home. I have to put him in a pull-up as soon as we get home or suffer the clean up. Good Luck, but I think he will be fine.
