Child Getting Hurt at Your House

Has anyone had an experience with a child getting hurt at their house (at a birthday party, etc.?). We had a birthday party yesterday and a child attending our party fell from the outside stairs and got hurt. His parents were not with him or watching him (the mom was inside our house). Even though I know it's an accident, I'm getting worried about liability (we are very good friends with the other couple). Should I be worried? Their son is in the hospital with a concussion. He is two years old btw.

So What Happened?

Thanks for everyone's advice. We are stopping by our friend's house tonight to check on everyone and bring them dinner. I doubt this will affect our friendship as they are still very good friends of ours and we are all vacationing together in 2 weeks.

I was on the other side of the fence, my child got hurt at someone else's house. The kids were playing in the backyard and we could see them out the window and suddenly the dog was dragging my 3 year old by his coat sleeve. We all ran out there and besides being scared out of his mind, my son was ok. The rest of the visit there was very awkward and our hosts even made a joke about calling a lawyer. We told them we wouldn't do that, but we never heard from those people again. We called them several times to have them over for dinner and they never called back.

A phone call to see how my son was doing or even if his coat was damaged would have been nice. He was wearing a new Gap down-filled coat when it happened and the dog tore holes in it, so I had to get him a new coat.

Keep in touch to see how he's doing and find out about your homeowners.

I'm very sorry to hear that he got hurt. Because you are good friends, I am sure she will not take any personal action. But, when she went to the hospital, they surely asked her where the incident occurred and this will be reported to her insurance. They will, in turn, try to get your friend's homeowners to pay. They will even ask for her address to track down the information. My son fell at my friends house and broke his collar bone. We went to the hospital and told them the truth about where we were. I did not know her address because she had just moved to a new house so that info was never given. The clerk wrote down the wrong spelling of her last name (thank goodness) and that prevented them from figuring out her information on their own. My medical insurance called me multiple times to try to get her name and insurance company's name. I argued repeatedly with several different people to get them not to proceed. I even offered to pay out right for the bill. (It was not ER, just x-rays ordered from my pediatrician.) Finally, they let it go and paid the money due to lack of information. I did not want my friendship to be compromised over an accident. I am sorry if your friend gave the hospital your info . . it could turn into a claim on your insurance. Good luck! The lesson I learned was that if you don't want your friends to be liable, tell them it happened at home. It's terrible to have to keep the truth a secret over an accident.

That's so sad to hear. I hope the little guy is ok!

Call your homeowner's insurance agent/company and put them on notice...just to be safe. Your policy should cover this should it come down to that.

My daughter got hurt at a friends birthday party. A trip to the emergency room and stitches. My husband wanted to try to have the friends parents pay for the medical cost but I refused. Accidents happen. Our medical insurance covered it with no problem.

Try not to worry we can't be every where at once. Call her to check on him often and see if she needs anything. She's probably worried sick. Hope he's ok. If she has medical insurance things should be ok. If not Toni made a good suggeston w/ checking w/your homeowners.

Happy birthday to your little

That is very difficult. Im sorry to hear this happened and I hope the child is ok. I would say you should make a call to your homeowners insurance and see what options you have just in case. Other than that give your support, ask if there is anything you can do, show good faith anyway you can.
