We are going camping in a few days and I was wondering if anyone knew of a child safe insect repellant. Any suggestions would be wonderful! Thanks!

Avon has a wonderful repellant which I think has an SPF of either 15 or 30. It comes in spray form and is okay for kids...no deet.

Hi,
I was watching CNN Dr. Gupta he said anything with DEET in it is the best for protection. I am not so sure of what product is the safest for children. I use the family OFF and it seems to work great. I like all the other advice about this subject I will do the same about rubbing it on my children than spraying it on them. Happy camping!!!

I found some really great cloths made by 'Off'. They worked great for the little people because there was no meesy spray to get in their eyes, you just rub it on. I am sorry, but I can not remember the exact name of them, but I purchased them at Safeway.

The number 1 thing to keep in mind when putting anything on your kids is safety--you definately want something non-toxic! Anything applied to you skin is absorbed into the blood-stream, after all. I use all natural, non-toxic household products that are multi-purpose, including using the cleaners as insect repellent. However, this close to your trip, I would suggest Burt's Bees which is available at Longs Drugs or Whole Foods. Ingredients: Soybean Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, & Lemongrass Oil. It smells really good & works!

Dear A.,

I am sure that there are a lot of new things out there, but I just heard the other day that if you take Vitamin B-1 everyday for 2 weeks that the mosquitos will not like the way that you smell, and human beings do not notice it . Also, go to www.drgreene.com, maybe he will have a suggestion, and that health magazine, I cannot remember it right now, it is like um ....Prevention or somethig like that. C. N.

We use:
"OFF! Skintastic family"

and we also use eucalyptus oil

Eucalyptus is really good to rub in your hair. It repels fleas, lice, tics, and mosquitoes.

Also, if your child likes garlic, eat garlic and the mosquitoes do will not bite. Supposedly after you eat garlic, your sweet smells differently and the mosquitoes do not like it.

Have fun on your camping trip! Can I go? lol

Las summer, we went to Babie's R-Us and looked and found an insect repelant. I can't find the company name, but they had two or three there. We used one that was a cream which was pretty good. (The company also makes shampoo, exema (sp?) cream etc. The packaging is a teal-green color. It is not too expensive, but worked great---expecially against mosquitos!

I would just go look at Babies-R-us...medicine isles! Have fun camping! I am totally jealous!

The only place to check is Whole Foods, but I don't think there is any. Before I went on my camping trip I talked to my peditrician and he gave me lots of advice. What he told me about bug spray is to not put it on their hands, and for you (mom or day) to first spray it on your hands and rub it on your children. If you use the spray on them directly it could get in their eyes, hands, etc.

Hope that helps.

I used Avon Skin so soft, with spf 30 (i think that's the number) and it worked beautifully! I have a 2.5 year old and we went camping and I had heard horror stories about all those bug repellant sprays. I have a friend who swore by the stuff, so I baught some at a kiosk in the Meadows mall and used it. My daughter and I were the only ones who weren't eaten alive by bugs! :)

One suggestion, spray it on your hands first then rub it on your kids, that way it doesn't get in their eyes or mouth (wash your hands after...). Feel free to spray it on yourself. Hope this helps!

There has actually been research on the fact that deet is alright for your kids. So any of the products that say family on them, like OFF is OK even if it has deet in it. Just try to avoid the children's hands if they tend to put them in their mouth.
