Chickenpox or Rash?

My baby is 11 months old and I noticed small red bumps (almost like small bites) on the back of his neck and this was the day before yesterday. This morning, still the same, not getting any worse. However, at the end of today, these bumps have spread to his trunk and a little on his legs. They are red bumps, varying in sizes, and some have just very small pustules, I mean very small. Is this chickenpox or a rash? How do you really know? He is not running a fever or acting any more out of the ordinary. I know some kids get very mild cases, but I just don't know if this is truly chickenpox. Any advice or comments?

What can I do next?

My daughter had similar and it was an allergic reaction to some medicine she was taking. I gave her benadryl (on advice from the dr. on call) and the rash was gone in a few days of taking benadryl.
I'd call the dr. if I were you to be sure. Good luck.

P.-
Not a physician, but it sounds like the allergic reaction my son used to get: tiny bumps that look like prickly heat. Has he eaten anything new? Have you switched up brands of laundry soap, baby wash, shampoo, fabric softener, diapers? New diaper service, etc. My son was allergic to a couple of really odd things: powdered eggs and zythromax (antibiotic).
If it doesn't resolve fairly soon, call your pediatrician. You could probably call a hospital nurses line and they might be able to help you. They're great, they can answer some questions over the phone and will make recommendations to come into emergency or call your pediatrician.
Best of luck, S.

In my experience, you can't know unless you have the Dr look at it. My son has had rashes that I thought were nothing, that turned out to be more serious and vice versa. With rashes, I've learned to just not second guess. Definately call your Dr. It could be lots of different things -- prickly heat, allergic reaction, strep/scarletina/scarlet fever, chicken pox, etc. The list could go on. It's good that he's not feverish or uncomfortable; however, that still doesn't mean that it doesnt need to be treated. Good luck. I hope it turns out to be just prickly heat and nothing bad for you.

I didn't read all your responses so if I repeat sorry, we had Chicken pox in Feb... no fever just bumps and they came up suddenly (my son is older so risk is different) but we have also had rash with strep throat, no fever, better get it checked before the holidays, better safe than sorry and sitting at an ER somewhere when you can't get to the DR...

Hard to tell Chickenpox is going around. I know three kids in our neighborhood who had it two weeks ago.

It is hard to advise, especially on a forum like this. It could be either or.

From experience...my daughter was vaccinated at age 2 when the pox vaccine was very new. When she was in 5th grade, we had just returned from Hawaii and she went back to school. A day or so later, she had a little rash but it was not itchy, no fever, etc. I assumed it was from the tanning products, etc.

The school nurse called me and informed me that we had exposed the school to chicken pox. I had NO IDEA it was possible to be chicken pox because she had the vaccine.

This is around the time when most kids who were vaccinated, starting having mild cases. We parents did not know our kids could get the pox after a vaccine. Now, a booster is required around age 10 if the child did not have a case of the pox.

Lesson learned for me. It was at that point, I got very turned off to new vaccines. My daughter did have a very mild case but she got the pox even after a vaccination.

Good luck!

Do you have a pediatrician? You could call and talk to the doctor or nurse on call, which is what I would do. Does sound like chicken pox to me. I'd let the doctor guide you.

Definitely take him to a pediatrician. My daughter at the same age had the same symptoms, but it turned out to be hand, foot, and mouth disease which is not bad (he said that everyone at one point has had it, but few realize it because the "rash" doesn't show on the outside of the skin). It's not bad, but it is very contagious to those who have never had it. Be safe and get it checked out since it really could be anything.
