Chewing Finger Nails

Hello - I have a 2 1/2 little girl - Lauren - who has recently started a terrible and extremely annoying habit. About a month ago she started picking at her finger nail and toe nails. We are not sure where she saw this because my husband and I do not do it. If she sees any white on them, she picks it off and is completely obsessed until she gets it off. She does not bite them, just picks it with her hands. Has anyone else dealt with this and have any solutions? Please help.....it's driving me crazy and it's not good for her!

Thanks!

S.

If she is picking instead of biting she may have just temporarily gotten it into her head that they should not have that white stuff at the end. Who can tell what toddlers are really thinking. Get some kid friendly nail polish and try keeping her fingers and toes painted. Not seeing the white she may stop picking at them. After a few weeks leave her toes unpainted and see if she still has the thing about it.

My daughter is chewing her fingernails and my mom told me to buy some stuff that goes on fingernails and tastes nasty. That way when she bites her fingernails again she will get the nasty taste and won't want to bite them. This might help of the white stuff if she is biting it off.

Hi S., I really don't have a solution for you. Mother put everything on the market for me and none of them ever phased me. When I got a lot lot older I just quit. My niece is 52, works in a government office and her nails are as short as you can get them clear to the skin and she has never found anything either. Good luck and maybe other mothers can help.

have some little friends over for a manicure party. paint your nails together and make it really fun to take good care of them and make them beautiful. maybe get some books from the library to read about nail care and make it fun. seriously, the influence of peers is amazing, even at this age. we had a hair party for my 3 year old daughter and now she loves doing her hair... before we could never get her to sit still even just to brush it!
