Latlely I've become very concerned about all the dangerous chemicals in sunblock. Have any of you Mama's found any products that are safe to use on your kids? I have heard a lot of talk about the California Baby line being safe. If you have used it, what do you think? Or does anyone have any other recommendations for a safe sunblock we can use for the whole family? Thanks in advance!!

To clarify what a previous poster said, you are looking for a sunscreen that provides a physical barrier instead of a chemical barrier, not a chemical-free sunscreen. I understood what you meant.

California Baby is a very good product. It is given a 1/10 hazard score by the Environmental Working Group, which basically the best score a sunscreen can get! I have used it, and it works well. However, it runs about $20 a bottle. Badger sunscreen has the same hazard rating and runs about $10 a bottle, which is the reason I prefer it. Badger is what my entire family uses, and it works very well - we just spent 3 hours at the zoo on a day that was waaaaay too hot and sunny for it, and no one was burned. Both go on to the skin white, but it can be blended by rubbing it in. Please don't forget to reapply it regularly, like any sunscreen, for the best protection.

If you ever have questions about the ingredients or safety of certain products, check out http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ which is a search engine provided by the EWG for different cosmetic products, and it is a wonderful website for those of us trying to avoid harsh or dangerous chemicals. Good luck.

I just looked at this website you (and other mamas out there) may find really helpful.

http://www.ewg.org/2010sunscreen/

I use Calfornia baby for our family and love it. Kind of expensive (ok really expensive) but I believe it is worth it. Our kids don't get burned. It is a pain to put on, very thick. But I guess that is why it works. I

The site I mentioned above talks about a problem they are seeing with Vitamin A in sunscreens and I think Ca Baby rated pretty high on the list. The nice thing about this website is you can look for the sunscreen you use and see how it rates or search what you need. Good Luck!

Teri said pretty much everything I was going to tell you! That website is super helpful. Both Ca Baby and Badger rate really well. I haven't tried Badger, but I like Ca Baby, and you can get it at Target. It goes on pretty well, not too chalky on the skin. Barrier sunscreens are going to be whiter and not soak in as well, that is how they work. But it is not too bad to me, goes on smooth and isn't too thick. And there is no reason you can't all use the Ca Baby, it isn't just for babies. I'll have to check the Kiss My Face brand on the website, I'd like to see how it rates and if it is cheaper.

Lots of sunscreens were found to be pretty useless, and the ones with vit A (retinol) can actually increase your risk of skin cancer. So it is definitely worth checking that site. They do have a few listed that are the safest chemical sunscreens too, if you find you can't live with the barrier type. The ewg site and cosmetic database are the same info- the cosmetic site is an offshoot of ewg. You can find the sunscreen article on either site.

All of the California Baby products are great and I love the fact that you can buy them at Target (which makes shopping a whole lot easier), but the sunscreen tends to go on a bit thick and doesn't blend into the skin very well. Currently, I've been using the Kiss My Face brand for both me and my children and it seems to do the trick. You can also go onto the Environmetal Working Group's website and check which brand sunscreen they rate as being safest to use.

**ADDITION: Just checked the EWG website and Kiss My Face sunblock didn't get a good rating. I'm tossing it in the trash right now . . .

I just did a lot of research on this and found Badger brand to be very natural and very safe for sensitive skin. I've used it just a few times on my 7 month-old and toddler and really like it! It's a bit harder to rub in than the more watery kinds, but I've tried it on my face and have had none of the burning I always get with other sunscreens. I think it's cheaper than California Baby, and it was more highly rated than CB too. Check out www.cosmeticsdatabase.com.

I just ordered some on Mercola.com called Natural Sunscreen. It's the best natural sunscreen I've found. Go to the site and Dr. Mercola explains all the ingredients in it and other sunscreens. He's been on Dr. Oz and other shows and is very passionate about using products that are nontoxic.

Since so many people referred the safe cosmetics website, I think you should know that they collected their "database" by letting visitors to the website input products & ingredients. I used to use them as a trusted resource but I have since found a lot on inaccurate information on there, ie. I've held the product in my hand & compared the ingredients that they have listed in that product with the label - they do not match! They are not what they seem. Also, their formula for rating products does not take into account percentage of ingredient used or the source.

I would stick with European formulated products as the EU bans over 1100 ingredients from personal care products (that part of their info is correct). Here in the US, only 9 of those ingredients are banned. Europe doesn't even allow most of our products to be sold over there due to safefy concerns. I would also make sure your products are not being manufactured in Mexico or Asia. Stick with products manufactured in Europe, US or Canada.

My daughter is allergic to California Baby and most sunscreens. Cal Baby has Titanium in which she can not use. I actually started my company, Nature's Baby Organics due to both my girls skin allergies. We have been diligently working on a zinc only formula that will apply easily for over 2 years. We hope to have one soon. Please check out my products at www.naturesbaby.com

Our pediatrician recommends that we make our own. There are a ton of chemicals in sunscreen that are VERY dangerous for small children. The best type of sunscreen is one without many chemicals and with zinc oxide as the primary ingredient. The zinc just sits on the surface of the skin and is not absorbed. Dr. Bar gave us a recipe to make it and it's quite easy. Check out her website: blog.drbar.org/page/3/

I am a Shaklee Distributor and This is what I use. I am allergic to most all other sunscreens. I'm not sure about what you don't want so you can click on the link and read the label:

click on "label" after you get there. It is okay for children over 6 months of age.

There is no such thing as chemical free sunscreen. Everything is made of chemicals, even you. That is just an advertising gimmick.

In sunscreen, it is a matter of which chemicals. Organic chemicals (such as PABA) are ubiquitous, but often cause skin irritation. Non-organic, such as nanosized particles of zinc oxide and/or titanium oxide block well and don't tend to irritate the skin (this is what CA baby sunscreen is). They are whitish in appearance, maybe not as pleasing to put on, but generally are considered better UV blockers and better for sensitive skin.

So, just check the ingredients.

We use California baby (the stick form) and Burt's Bees. It's a lot harder to apply and is pretty thick, doesn't smooth well, but I know it's safer that the easy spray on kind. I've seen a brand at Henry's called Jason's (I think) that's a pump form, but haven't tried it yet. Seems like it might go on easier. As far as protection, CB and BB work well. I use them for myself and my son who is darker than I am, and I am very pale.

I'd just read an article on this recently. See the following:

From the Environmental Working Group:

The best sunscreen is a hat and a shirt. No chemicals to absorb through the
skin, no questions about whether they work. But when you can’t get away from exposing your skin to the sun, use EWG’s top-rated sunscreens to provide broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB-sunburn) protection with fewer hazardous chemicals that penetrate the skin. Sunscreen makers are awaiting FDA approval for a wider selection of UVA-blocking chemicals. In the meantime, all top-rated products contain either zinc or titanium minerals to help cut UVA exposures for sunscreen
users.

Choose from among our top-rated sunscreens for broad spectrum protection with fewer hazardous ingredients. And follow our sun safety tips to protect your skin for a lifetime.
