So, DD just turned 4 years old. She has always expressed interest in cheerleading. I'm curious what all it takes, now and as she gets older to be a cheerleader. I was not a girly-girl, so I have no idea how to raise this girly-girl. I've seen cheerleading camps around. Is that the best way for her to try it out and see if she likes it? What kind of total costs/yr are we talking about?
Have you had good/bad experiances with cheerleading? A friend of mine said her daughter needed to learn to do certain things beefore she could compete. She is 6 yrs old I think. When do they start competing? Is this something I should encourage, or shield her from? Please share, I could use all the help I can get. Thanks.

What can I do next?

Cheerleading can be costly and she will be expected to eventually compete. Try her out in noncompetetive YMCA cheering or tumbling then go into competetive cheerleading. In competetive cheering, the uniforms, travel, etc consume alot of time, money and energy. If she turns out to be good, you'll want to fine tune her talents with special coaches. I guess what I am trying to say is... don't get sucked into all of the expensive coaching and uniforms until you know that she will stick with it...unless of course, money is not an issue.

I used to be a dance instructor and now my daughter is a competitive cheerleader. As long as YOU let her progress at her own level, then there is no issue. It's the stage moms that think their daughter is the best the mess it all up. Find a good school..if at all possible, I recommend Stars in Schertz. Yes, that's where my daughter goes, but since I am a former dance teacher, I recognize the talent and love they have for the kids...

Email me if you want to talk more...I was part of the competition circuit for years

I'm a former cheerleader and my daughter is a cheerleader. She started at around age 6 or 7 in first grade. If you are homeschooling look to co-ops in and around you. She was homeschooled for a while and our co-op had a cheerleading group. :) It is VERY athletic, contrary to some beliefs. My daughter also does volleyball and softball and believe it or not the cheerleading keeps her in condition all year long. It can be quite expensive if you go with league groups especially. The camps can be quite fun. I would definitely also look into places like the dance schools. Most of them also have cheer sections. It is a great experience and TONS of fun!

My oldest granddaughter was in to competition cheerleading with a cheerleading group and was also a cheerleader with her high school. She loved it and it gave her such confidence. It is very expensive with all the costumes, traveling etc. so you want to really make sure that is what she wants to do. My other daughter has recently put one of my younger granddaughters in a tumbling and cheerleading group at Alamo Gym at Huebner and Bitters. I think she is paying something like $60 a session which is something like 6 weeks and she goes one day a week. She is doing this to let her get the feel of tumbling and cheering and see if she likes it or not before she makes any further decisions. You certainly don't want to push her in to something she may not like and spend all that money as well. I would do like one of the other girls mentioned. Try the YMCA or even something like Alamo Gym just to try it out and let her get her feet wet.
Now as a grandmother I was always worried about injuries and they will happen. Sometimes serious ones but you want to make sure they have a good coach and practices safety in their routines.
