Checking Baby for Fever During the Night

Hey mamas, you would think by the third baby a mother would know how to handle a simple fever!! But the thing is I have typically let my children sleep all night even with a fever bc I always believe sleep to be very helpful and in five+ yrs of having kids none of my kiddos have ever had a crazy high fever to worry over. Well not so now, a week or so ago my 2 yr old got up to about 104.7 and so I was very dilligent to check him and medicate him all night and he is fine now. But now the baby has fever, not as high thank goodness, but since it seems to be the same junk, I am a bit concerned. So here is the actual question. I gave my 11 month old infant Tylenol at 6 pm and he was down to sleep by 7ish. Now normally I would give Infant Ibuprofen at 9 (per my docs recommenation) but I am thinking of waiting until like 11 or midnight so my little one can get more sleep at a time. I was debating if he didn't feel overly warm giving him another couple hrs, but I don't know, I don't want that temp to spike suddenly he is so little, what would you do? Thx mamas :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Checked him at 11:30, he was fretful and fever was 103.5, poor baby.... Gave him meds, put him in cooler clothing, gave him a drink, rocked him and he was already feeling cooler at midnight, guess we are back on three hour rounds of meds till this thing breaks...thanks mamas

I would not wake him at all unless the temp is 103 or above. If he happens to wake up due to coughing or something, then I would give him some, but otherwise let him sleep. Rest is what he needs the most.

Even if it did spike, you would be watching him so you could give the ibuprofen right away if you need to. Also, I know as a mom you worry about fever etc. But there isn't anything to worry about as long as the fever isn't over 106.---Besides a febrile seizure. Unless baby has history of this, I wouldn't worry and let baby sleep until next dose of ibuprofen.

I put a Vicks stick on thermometer on my DD and treated her according to the temp on the sticker. It's supposed to be pretty accurate. I would honestly let a sick baby sleep, though. Unless the fever is 104 or something, he'll be OK.

I never woke any of my kids up, just never had to. I never slept well when they were sick so when I woke up I would check their temp, never went above a hundred when they were sleeping.

If the temperature is not already erratic it isn't going to suddenly become erratic just because you are sleeping.

I got a pack of wear-able thermometers that you can put in a place in the baby where u could read easily. I have not used them yet. Hope your LO is feeling better soon.

Be careful with that girl!! That's scary when those temps get high... Especially babies!! I would def watch them close! A rhyme my aunt taught me when I was young with my 1st and not much experience! 104 and your out the door... Its sounds funny but its the truth because as soon as a fever goes over 104 then brain damage can occur! That rhyme has been helpful to me a plenty!! And sometimes u can sneak the motrin in there mouth when there sleeping!! Your the momma whatever makes u more comfy if its giving baby motrin to put your mind at ease so u can rest peacefully for a bit or gettin up every once in a while to check on baby!!!

I find that this is the perfect reason to have an in-ear or temple thermometer. Sure they are not as accurate, but they work pretty nicely for determining whether you are going to wake your baby to medicate or let them sleep.
We have an in-ear thermometer and it takes 3 seconds to take the temp of a sleeping kid without waking them. So yeah, if the fever was high all day long I check at night, if it's just a low grade fever (stayed under 101 all day) then I don't.
Good luck!

I teach sp. ed and see the results of people letting fevers get too high. It can cause brain damage and convulsions and all kinds of issues.
For one thing why is the baby having such high fevers repeatedly?
Tylenol and the like are just masking what is really wrong. There is obviously some kind of infection??
I would seriously monitor my child's fever and never let it get that high. We would be at the emergency room.
