Hello all!

I am looking for some recommendations of good alternative high school options for a friend who lives near South Mountain. His son is struggling greatly in 9th grade in public school (being bullied, doesn't have a good support group of friends, struggling with academics). I think he would do much better in a smaller environment where he won't be lost in the crowd. Do any of you have recommendations for a good high school program?

Thanks for your help!

The one I would recommend is not a charter school but a private school. Its ALA,( Az Lutheran Academy) located at 27 and Southern. Its a Lutheran school but you don't have to be Lutheran or really even religious to go there, but that does help because they do pray and have chapel. The whole school has 160 kids. They have athletics, drama and several of the programs other high schools have. They will work with you in whatever ways they can with tuition.
You can drop in anytime and they will give you a tour.

Paragon Science Academy High School on Chandler Blvd. just east of Kyrene is a small school with high academy expectations. You can see more at www.paragonscience.org.

I've heard great things about Veratas. Also, Metro Arts Institute is a small charter. My daughter is in the 8th grade there and I have some carpoolers in the high school (if your child is into visual and performing arts). Villa Montessori may be starting a high school in the next year or two.

A great High School is Summit High School... 7th St and McDowell.
Sorry not sure how close that is to where he lives.
It was a much better place for my stepson to go to.
I do not think he ever got picked on nor in trouble.
