Chapped Lips - New Braunfels,TX

My 3-year old seems to always have dry, chapped lips. We put chapstick on him constantly, I even put it on him every night after he falls asleep to make sure it stays on longer, this has helped some but they are still chapped. We have tried increasing his water intake thinking he may be dehydrated. We have tried every type of chapstick and nothing really seems to make a big difference. Has anyone else haad this problem or had any success treating chapped lips on a toddler?

Petroleum jelly. This is the best solution to help chapped lips. Put it on him before he goes to bed at night and again, first thing in the morning. You will notice a huge difference. PJ is also helps for sensitive noses after a cold, when you have to use tissues all the time. Put some PJ on their nose at night and they will not have a problem with sensitivity the next day. :)

I hope this helps!

I know you said that you tried increasing his water intake, but I would work more on that. I am a flutist and keeping my lips from chapping is important to my ability to play. My opinion is that the lips chap from the inside out. I drink lots of liquids and if my children's lips even look dry I take that as an early sign of dehydration and offer them something to drink. Give him juice, chocolate milk, what ever you can to get him to drink more.

I would also suggest vaseline. Not only is it inexpensive, it seems to work better for my kids. A cold water humidifier in the room at night may help as well. good luck~

The problem with many things like chapstick is that it is loaded with chemicals. Vaseline is a petroleum product, & not really safe to ingest. I try to avoid such things as parabens, petroleum, lanolin, and propylene glycol in any of the products used on the body (as all of this is absorbed into the system). I have been using extra virgin organic coconut oil. A 16 oz container is around $9 at Sun Harvest or Whole Foods. I place it in a smaller container and carry in my purse and have one on my nightstand (I store the rest in fridge). It is completely safe to eat of your lips and tastes pretty good. I am also using it as my moisturizer and body lotion. I don't have to worry about not putting it on my lips or under eyes. I figured it is economically a good deal and will eliminate many regular products. It is eco-friendly, and has no reason to be tested on animals. I hope this helps. C

I went through this with my son when he was the same age. I did use a chapstick on him. I bought some at Target that had Disney characters on the tube itself and he loved using it. It eventually went away. Beware of what you use and how it will affect your son's body if he licks it off hos lips and gets it in his body.
Good luck.

I would try plain old vaseline. It's true, for somereason chapsticks have a way of just making things worse. Keep up on the water intake and put the vaseline on whenever his lips are dry.

We used Aquaphor and it works great. A little more expensive but it works. My son would get dry lips and than at night while he was sleeping would chew on his lips and Aquaphor helped reduce the chewing greatly and his lips healed quickly. Best thing out there.

Hi,
My kids all have very chapped lips. I have found that aquaphor lotion works very well. It is a little on the pricey side but you do not need to use a lot so it goes far. I was told that chapstick actually makes it worse. It kind of looks like vaseline. I love it. You can buy it at any store. Good luck!!!

Hi R.-

I don't have a good answer for you, but I will say that using chapsticks too much can actually cause the lips to become even dryer. Some chapsticks contain alcohol, menthol or camphor which are all drying agents.

I would suggest that you run a humidifier in his room at night while he sleeps.

Good luck,
K.

My almost 4 year old nephew has had this problem for as long as I've had him (going on two years). What makes it worse is the fact that he picks his lips when they are dry and cracking, which subsequently makes them bleed... Makes me cringe to think about it. I've tried several different lip therapies, and I've found that Neosportin (spelling?) LT works very well. I know you can find it in the chap stick area of Wal-Mart, but I don't know what other stores carry it. It's a little pricey for chap stick, around $3-$4, but it is worth it. I put it on him in the morning before he goes to school and at bedtime at a minimum, and it has completely cleared up his chapped lips. I hope this helps you out!

The reply from Karen B is correct. Too much chapstick can make your lips dryer. I had a friend addicted to it with no happy ending to her dry lips. Mary Kay has a lip mask that exfoliates dry skin and a lip balm that moisturizes the lips for up to 10 hours. I use the mask once a week and the balm daily. If Mary Kay Cosmetics is not your choice; then my suggestion would be to try a gentle facial scrub on his lips evry other day along with a lip balm or vaseline other than chapstick. Feel free to visit my website www.marykay.com/M. and I will be happy to help you and your son. Good Luck! Many happy kisses to your son.

Chapstick is good for protecting the lips from getting chapped, but once they are chapped, it really doesn't help. Vaseline, as others have suggested, is better, but I would recommend Carmex. Put it on at night and it will heal the chapped lips while he sleeps. It may take a few nights, but it will work. Humidifying the room is also a good idea. After his lips are healed, continue using the Carmex at night and his lips won't get chapped again.

My son had the same problem and it got so bad the skin around his lips started to crack and bleed. I used the Lansinoh Lanolin that I had left over from when I was breast feeding. I figured that if you could put it on your breast and still feed, it was safe to put on his lips and the skin around it.

Another time, I used bag balm. It worked like a charm and I only needed to do it for maybe three nights. It may have been faster if I did it during the day but I was certain that he would just lick it all off and maybe make it worse. Bag balm can be found in a square green tin and was originally designed for animals' udders--I know, I know, that seems weird but I use it for my hands in the winter time to avoid damage.

I read most of the responses and din't see this mentioned anywhere. Neutragina hand cream works very well on the checks, nose and lips. My dd thinks is taste "good" also - in other words she doesn't object to the flavor when I put it on her lips. Many chapstick types, especially Carmex, can be addicting - read the packageing and fine print on Carmex sometime. Many times they will put mentholatum in chapstix to give you that tingle feeling - it also has something in it that makes it addicicting so instead of solving a small problem, you are actually creating a bigger one. Granted, putting Carmex on constantly will probably slow the chapped lips, it isn't really the best solution. I have a friend that has been "addicted" to it since he was 9 when his mom gave it to him on the ski slopes - he is now 37 and can't go with out it - it's worse than his snuff addiction!!!!

In the past, I've found that any kind of lip remedies I use, only make the chapping worse. I had some Lanolin left over from nursing, and thought, if it works on chapped nipples (and is safe for infants to ingest), why not lips?
I put it on before bed, and in the morning, there's no sign of chapping. I've even used it on painful cracked heels (you need to put socks on to keep the sheets clean), and it worked wonders. My girls now know it as "the lip stuff," and I even keep a travel size (I got it at Special Addition) in the car.

Good luck!

I found after trying different things, I noticed that it happened most often after I ate oranges. Try making a list of everything that your child eats or drinks. See if there is something that is had every day. Then try not having that one thing. It could be something that your child is alergic to, and that may be simple enough to stop having. Also is your child a finger or thumb sucker this could also be the problem. Good luck.

Be sure you're using Burt's Bees or Vaseline or something more natural (less harsh) on his lips. There is an article (I think it was in Oprah's magazine) about how some products like caramex slough off the top layer of skin so you constantly need to reapply. My husband was addicted to his caramex and when I told him about the study we threw away his and the kids' and bought burt's bees. Just look at the ingredients and make sure you know what they all are.

The Body Shop has a 'chapstick' called Mentha that is amazing. My brother who has chronic chapped lips has had the best results using this product (black tube w/ green writing) It actually has the same ingrediant as Vick's and works wonders! I would try either of them (Vicks or Mentha) because you will find the results with either to be amazing.

FYI: They DO tingle a bit and some kiddos aren't fond of the sensation.

Best wishes!

During the first few days after my daughter was born we noticed her lips getting chapped. I wasn't sure what would be safe for her in case she injested any of it. I was using the Lansinoh lanolin for nursing at the time and read on the bottle it was safe to use without wiping off before nursing the baby. We used this and it seemed to help. We thought if she could have it in her mouth from me using it, then it would be fine on her lips. (We've also used it while she was sick with a runny nose and the outside of her nostrils got red. It seemed to help get rid of the irritation there too.)

Hi R..

Using Chapstick, or worse, Carmex masks the chafing that's already there and only makes the lips worse.
I use and LOVE Boudreaux's Baby Kisses. The box specifies chapped lips and cheeks. I find it in the diaper rash/ointment area in the Baby aisle at Target. It's in a squeeze tube and comes in a yellow box. I've tried everything else and this really cleared up my twins lips and cheeks.

Hi R.,

My little boy has a bad habit of licking his lips during the winter season and he would get very bad chapped lips and would get that red ring around his lips....aside from constantly reminding him not to lick his lips, we bought his some Carmex.....that is some awesome stuff.....you will immediately see a difference....you can find this in chapstick, gloss tube or a little hard wax in a small round container....you can find this at any gas station or at Walmart in the paying aisle or in the pharmacy section....hope this helps him, like it has helped our little one.

Have you ever tried the Melaleuca brand of lip balm? I am a customer of this company and they have a great lip balm with tea tree oil in it. I would be willing to send you one to try as long as you let me know if it does the trick.
This company has great products for your health and also offers a way that Moms can work from home without stocking any products or buying any inventory. I happen to have extra lipbalm at home because I like to have one in every room.
