Changing from One Formula to Another

My baby girl is currently on soy formula per doctor, however the doctor told me tuesday morning that we can change her back to regular enfamil if we want. They had put her on soy while running some blood work, just in case she had galactosemia. My big quesiton is that when we changed her to soy the first few days she vomited a couple of times and was very irritable, then after about 3-4 days she is fine.
If I change her back to regular enfamil should I slowly alternate the formulas to try to avoid the vomiting and irribility or cold turkey change her over?

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
My daughter was on soy too. Regular milk made her very gasy. At her 9 month appt the doctor told me to try regular. With Soy she would spit up after each feeding. When I put her on regular she never spit up again. I had planned to gradully put her on regular but when she tasted the regular she refused the soy. She is almost 2 now and is fine with regular milk. Good luck.

She should be fine. I would change her over, if she continues with some difficulty you may want to try similac sensitive. Its much easier on their tummies. It thickens when its in the belly wich will help with less spitting up its really good formula and would never hurt to try.

I agree completely with Nikki. Don't just start her on new formula. Mix it with the the soy. After a few times doing that increase the new formula and decrease the soy. In a short amount of time she will be completely on the new stuff. Best of Luck. I went through the same thing with my son.

Is there any reason she should not stay on the soy? If she likes it why change back. If you really do want to put her on the other I would try maybe mixing it at first rather than one of the soy and then one of the other. I have no idea so I am asking. Does the soy taste different? Maybe she threw up becuase she just didn't like the taste. Not to put her in the same basket but cats and dogs will throw up if they change food cold turkey. You always mix some of the old with the new to transition they. Just a thought.

My twins were on soy formula until I switched them to soy milk. I guess I don't understand why your doc is saying to switch her now. Soy is good to have. If you do decide to switch her knowing she did that before I would go very very slowly. I would take as long as a few weeks. Only adding a little bit of the new formula at a time. Goodluck!

Hi L.,
This is kind of similar, I think. My dr. told me that when introducing milk to my daughters (when they were at the correct age), we should introduce it an ounce at a time. When making bottles do all formula & an ounce of milk. After a couple of days do all formula & 2 ounces of milk, etc. It worked well. Actually we were nervous about our younger daughter b/c she had a very sensitive stomach, she was on soy & we weren't sure if she could digest milk.
Good luck!

Hi L.,
Either way she will probably be irritable and vomit maybe even diarrhea for the first 1 or 2 days..you could try alternating them if you think it will make a difference gradually reducing the amount of soy you give to her..
Good luck

You don't have to switch her over if you do not want to....just a suggeston. Soy is perfectly healthy for her.

You probably shouldn't just switch her over. You should mix the old with the new for a few days. For example, if you were making 6 oz bottles you would mix 4 oz of old with 2 oz of new for the first day, then do 3 oz of old with 3 oz of new for the second day, then do 4 oz of new with 2 oz of old for the third day, then on the fourth day you could make the whole bottle the new formula. A baby's digestive system is very sensitive so you don't want to make an abrupt switch like that. That could be why she was vomitting the first time. Good luck!
