Certified Prenatal Massage Therapist Wanted

Hey there! I'm 29 wks pregnant and in pain! My husband is a certified massage therapist and thank God he really helps me a lot! But he tells me that there's a specific certification you get to be a prenatal massage therapist, and they're licensed specifically in prenatal massage and have special tables so you can lie on your stomach and get a great massage cuz the stomach part of the table actually has like a belly hole or dent or something. I'd love to get one of these prenatal massages, but all the places I've looked into-- even at my hospital believe it or not-- are given by regular massage therapists like my husband without any specific prenatal massage certification. If that's all I'm gonna get, there's no point in payin for it since I have it at home for free!

Does anyone know of a therapist somewhere licensed specifically in prenatal massage? I live in the Jefferson Park area.

What can I do next?

Aimee Duddles at Central and Devon is a prenatal massage therapist. She is excellent. I went to her when I was pregnant and I still go to her now. She doesnt use the special tables because there is research that it is bad for you but she has other techniques to give you an awesome massage despite the huge belly. Google Balance Massage Therapy Chicago and you should come up with her website.

Urban Oasis has therapist that have been certified in pre-natal massages and have the nice tables with the belly cut out. They have locations in Lincoln Park and the Gold Coast. Sally at the North Ave. location is excellent.

Hi M.,
A friend of mine is certified in prenatal massage and also infant massage (which is great once you have the baby). She currently works at a spa but also does home massages on the side. She has a table and special pillows she brings along with her. She lives in Elmhurst and her rates are reasonable although I'm not sure about what she charges for travel. She did many of my prenatal massages and it was a blessing! Please email me if you would like her information and I will let her know that you will be in touch.
Best of Luck!
J.

I am a certified prenatal massage therapist! I can't come to your area, however. What I would advise you of is two things: do NOT lie face down on either a table hole (the stress on your ligaments supporting your belly are already in great strain, this could cause severe damage, ignore the marketing) and do not lie on a pillow face down that semi-supports your belly (too much pressure on your belly).
Sorry, just not a time for lying face down. I understand, I'm sitting here with my 3 month old!

I am so happy your husband knows you could use a LMT with prenatal certification! I went through Kate Jordan seminars, perhaps you could contact them for a qualified person in your area 888-287-6860 http://www.katejordanseminars.com/? I learned a lot from her and received massages from a fellow classmate who works at 1000 Waves Spa on Belmont (Heidi).

Good luck!

Hi there - check out Urban Oasis spas here in the city (one on North and Sheffield) - they are awesome! I had a few massages there during my third trimester and they were absolutely wonderful. Also - check on their website and you can get ~ $10 off for your first massage and often times they send you coupons for discounts later. http://www.urbanoasis.biz/
Good luck with your pregnancy! It is AWESOME being a Mom!

Hi M.,

I can recommend a great massage therapist who is certified in pre-natal massage. She gave me many great massages before, during and after my pregnancy. She was also able to show me pressure point to reduce nausea and did manual lymph drainage to help with headaches and sinus problems. She doesn't have one of those tables with a hole in it, but she does have a lot of props and knows how to position you so you're safe and comfortable. Her name is Madge Lockwood and her web site is http://www.chicagomassageworks.org/about.html. Enjoy!
