Cerclage

I had a cerclage 11 1/2 yrs ago for triplets. I had extra pressure and the doc checked to see if possibly I was softened or anything. She sent me over to be checked in the hospital because there was a little shortening. My preferred doc from the practice was on duty that day and suggested the cerclage. There is always a chance it will not work. But I wanted to at least try to make sure we saved them. When they were putting it in, it turned out I was dilated 1 cm so it turned out to be the best thing I did. I did not have a problem with the water level or location of the sac though. I would follow the doc's advice to the letter if at all possible. I know what you mean though by feeling lost. You have no control and it really is so hard to have that feeling. After the cerclage I did not have strict bedrest but I rested as much as possible because I did not want to take any chances. I delivered at 36 weeks due to infant distress-my daughter did some sommersaults and got her cord stuck. Now they are 12 and driving me nuts with their tween angst.

I think the prudent course is to keep to strict bed rest and see if that halts the dilation. I would avoid the cerclage if possible, since your OB is telling you it brings additional risk.

That's scary and I'm not sure what I'd go with! I have a cerclage (second one, second pregnancy) but I got mine put in at 14 weeks.. the best time to do it is 14-16 weeks so at 22 weeks I'd be scared too. Did he say he'd do it vaginally or abdominally? That's a big difference.. if he could still do it vaginally then the stitch would be farther away from your bag of water.. does he have you on progesterone? I get injections weekly to prevent this exact thing from happening and from what my OB has talked to me about this has done wonders for a lot of women who would otherwise not carry to term or not carry to viability.. But I also started the progesterone shots at 16 weeks.. I guess since you said your risk for preterm labor was high (and you've known that) why didn't the doc put you on the progesterone? From what I've seen on here and through friends it's a pretty well known treatment and it's getting a lot of attention.. Has your doc done anything as far as prevention goes? I'd be a little concerned.. keep us updated!

Did your doctor give you an idea of what is less risky - bedrest or cerclage? This may sound like a dumb question, but can you wait to have the cerclage procedure until after you hit your viability date? That would be my question to the doctor. You need to do everything in your power to keep those babies safe and sound until at least 24 weeks.

I will pray for ya'll!!!!! I havent dealt with your exact situation, but I did have twins 8 months ago. so if you ever have any twin questions i'm here for you!!! I would pray about it and dont do anything you dont feel comfortable doing!!! Lots of women get partially dialated early, just keep up with the bed rest and doc appts. Good luck and God Bless!!!!!

Never been in your situation but had another situation with twins. I was seeing a perinatologist when pregnant with them (my OB was the one who referred us to him, as she had little experience with our problem). If you are not seeing one, I would suggest going to see one for a second opinion. They are likely to have more experience with your situation than a regular OB. You live near Houston so I'm sure there are some great ones available. If you don't know what a "peri" is, they are high risk pregnancy doctors.
