I recently found out that both of my boys and myself have celiac disease. Any moms out there going through it too? I would love to share recipes and get advice on how to do things like eat out. For those of you that dont know what it is, it is basically an allergy to wheat, rye, barley and oats. Thanks so much!!!

What can I do next?

Hi H.! I personally don't have celiac disease but I used to take care of a woman that did. I know her daugther got us some special gluten free flour to use when we cooked for her and there are gluten free cake mixes and such too. I would look online I know that is where the lady got a lot of her products. I know also she got some from Trader Joes and some of the other health food stores carry products to use in place of flour and such in meals. Hope that helps.

Dear H.,
I just talked to a mother at my preschool that has celiac disease. She has started a support group and I would love to put you in touch with her. She is a really nice person and has two young boys who right now do not have celiac disease. Please let me know if you have interest. She has been dealing with the disease since age 18 and her sister has it as well. I think she would be a wealth of information. Take care.

Wow H.- that is quite some news to find out you all have celiac dz. Ihave a daughter- now 5 1/2, who has it as well. We found out when she was just under 3 years old. It took a long ruling out process of other causes but we now know it is celiac. She tested a vert hi positive after a gliadin antibody test. We were scheduled for an endoscopic biopsy test of the small intestine to confirm it as this is the gold standard to determine 100% accuracy of the diagnosis, however, she always seemed to get an ear infection prior to the test and subsequently we would have to cancel due to antibiotics and fever. Now 2 1/2 years later, we still haven't had the biopsy, but the diet, as usual, stopped all of the symptoms. It is very difficult to follow the diet, especially for me since I don't bake much. I can tell you for sure, it helps to have a dietician give you a list of the vast names that wheat gluten hides under, such as: modified food starch, PHVP 9partially hydrogenated vegetable protein), MSG, anything with malt, etc... I have found that Trader Joes has a large variety of foods that you can purchase. Alos, if you live by or shop at Raley's supermarket, they sell a bread called tapioca loaf. it is sliced bread. i have found it to be the lightest and most tolerated by my daughter, and believe me, we've tried all kinds that she hated. The breads tend to be very heavy (like a brick) made from rice flours. There are breads that have a combonation of potato flour, rice four, tapioca flour that as far as taste, she can stomach. The tapicoa bread is good for french toast, peanut butter, ham sandwiches etc... you can buy cornflakes and crush them to bread a meat- this is very good. my daughter eats honeycomb and fruity pebbles for cereal- made of corn. They have not caused a problem and are much cheaper than buying the expensive Gluten free cereals that she semi-likes. Pamela's gluten free cookies are in stores everywhere- she likes the lemon flavor or the vanilla ones- kind of expensive. They do sell cake and cookie mixes if you bake. When we go to fast food- I have them serve her the hamburger and cheese, no bun- just like a low carb burger- oh and the fries are ok. After awhile, you will get the hang of it. it does take forever to shop though. watch out for candies because many of them have modified food starch in them. 3 Musketeers are ok. hope this helps. oh, and the great news for us is my daugher love Mexican food and corn tortillas are a major food staple for her- love those enchilladas! Best wishes to all of you.

The current People magazine has an article in it (I think). I've read the last 2 weeks and know it was in one of the two. I wish I could remember the info they provided, but I left the mags on the planes. I'm sure a google search would yeild some good info, too.

Oh, wow you are not alone. My 3.5 yr old son has it, well not offically diagnosed because we never did the biopsy but he has pretty much all the symtoms of it and has had a positive blood test and genetic testing (through enterolab). Anyways, joining a local celiac support group helped me. Reading Danna Korn's books have helped too (she's the one in the June 11th issue of People mag pg 144). Joining an online message board for celiacs has helped tremdously.
www.glutenfreeforum.com and www.celiac.com

They have a ton of articles and product lists. For recipes I have found a ton of yummy ones at www.gfcfrecipes.com

Mostly I cook our same ol food just make sure I use gluten free baking stuff/spices. I'm not good at making bread so I buy that and then for the extra treats I buy some premade cookies or cake mixes.

Good luck. We've been eating mostly gluten free for a year before we got the celiac dx for my son, now we've been 100% gf since March.
