I was recently diagnosed with celiac.I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for books or websites. I am not to concerned with being able to follow the diet. I have plenty of experince with special diets. My daughter was allergic to milk and corn, my other daughter is a vegetarian(use to be vegan), and my mother was diabetic. I am more concerned about the hidden gluten, like in soy sauce. I would have never thought about it being in soy sauce.
I am looking on the good side of this... maybe I will finally lose those last 15 lbs!
Thank-you!

Elisabeth Hasselback from "The View" just wrote a book about a gluten free diet. I think its called "The G Diet". I saw the book at target. Good Luck

It's hard to believe it, but it can be in the personal care products that you use too! I have a source for GF products if you'd like to know about them. Luckily this is a BIG issue now and there are many places to get information. You are not alone! Your daughter will be happy to know that these products are not tested on animals or have animal by products in them either! Yeah!! Here's to your family's health!

My maternal grandmother and mom were diagnosed with Celiac. (I guess it's probably just a matter of time for me...)

Anyway, not sure where you live but there is a GF store in Northbrook (actually called The Gluten Free Store: http://www.glutenfreestoreusa.com/). Also try a Web search to see about online stores you could shop.

Meijer and Whole Foods also have a good line of products. My mom has had good luck at a health food store in Niles on Milwaukee by Golf Mill - so see if there is a mom and pop health food store near you that carries a line of GF products.

When you eat out, ask to speak with the chef -- restaurants are FINALLY getting it and chefs can make modifications/recommendations to foods that are delicious and GF. Our recent experience at Maggiano's (Schaumburg) was fabulous!! The chef came out and talked with my mom and made recommendations and offered to make modifications. They also carry a GF pasta on the menu. But the chef really got it. Plus he was cute so bonus! : )

Also, the University of Chicago is an INCREDIBLE source of information: http://www.celiacdisease.net/

While manufacturers are required to list wheat as an ingredient in their products, a lot of their products end up containing some kind of gluten protein. If you have favorite processed foods that you're unsure of (or even condiments for that matter) call the company directly or visit their Website for a list of their products that are truely GF. Having this list will make your shopping trips go more smoothly and quickly in time.

Thankfully Celiac is becomming more widely known and understood. My grandmother was diagnosed about 15 years ago - it was rough.

Good luck.
Jen

There are so many stores now that have the "g" label for gluten free. Trader Joes has a list that you can download from their website or have the lists in their stores. Whole Foods carried much of it as well. I have a friend that specializes in it and has a wealth of information and if you would like her email send me a message.
