Cavities in Baby teeth...to Fill or Not to Fill?

Just wondering on everyone's opinions on this one. My 7-yr old son was taken to the dentist last week, and we found out he has 2 cavities in his baby teeth. They suggested we have them filled. Is this necessary if they are just going to fall out? Although I wouldn't want a rotting tooth to cause more problems in a tooth next to it. Thoughts?

After reading one of the previous posts, I am going to take him to a Pediatric dentist instead, so THANK YOU for that post and all the comments!!!

What can I do next?

Yes - I would take him to a pediatric dentist. But if they recommend they be filled - do it. It's really an easy procedure. And if the cavity in the baby tooth can start to affect the permanent tooth under it if the cavity gets bad enough. Both my boys have had cavities filled. (Yes - I know - we HAVE to get better about brushing and flossing :) But the teeth they had done are ones they will still have for awhile. My youngest just got a cap on one. Didn't take the dentist 30 minutes and my son talked the entire time !

It's important to maintain the health of the baby teeth because they help maintain the shape of the mouth and position of the teeth so when the adult teeth start coming in they are in the right spot. Also, you don't want teeth with decay causing a bigger problem like an abscess that will require medication and more extensive dental work. An abscess in a baby tooth requires more than just antibiotics. Maintaining his oral health now promotes overall good health and good oral habits for a lifetime. And yep, a pediatric dentist is the way to go!

Don't hesitate take him in have them filled or caped my son is 6 he will have 2 molars pulled by Friday this will be his 2nd he has 6 caps all on molars crazy I know I have asked ?'s why this he is healthy he never ever had a cup to bed he didn;'t take a bottle with juice or soda he was drinking in cups fully by 8 months started sippy cups @ 6 months.i'm scared for him I hate having the needle into my gums but it has to be done.I even started taking him to a pediatric dentist @ 1 yr of age but they never cleaned his teeth they tried but all I got was bring him back in 6 months all looks fine now ok so I went with the flow he was very scared refused to cooperate with them that didn't help matters much now I feel horrible becasue I did everything I possibly could to prevent this from happening to him let alone anyone of my kids ,baby teeth are important I hate it when parents say they fall out anyways & ignore the dentist or brushing teeth. My son has cavaties it was a hard pill to swallow 4 caps on top 2 caps on bottom now 2 teeth pulled becasue of abcesses the roots became infected from the toothe decay so to prevent this from spreading & effecting his adult teeth they have to be pulled. He is losing teeth he has 4 more loose teeth that won't fall out for a while. He doesn't have crowding on his baby teeth all the cavaties are in between the teeth so having to floss daily is crucial to get trapped food. These cavaties spread so fast by the time I noticed a speck on them it was to late

Well ...here's my thoughts...
You are concerned with the decay 'transferring' (for lack of better word) to the tooth next to it. I think you should be MORE concerned about the decay transferring to the tooth underneath! (the permanent one) The other concern (to me) is that the children HAVE to be taught, from a young age) they need to have a very proactive and darn near relentless attitude when it comes to thier oral health.
I just went to the dentist and they have told me it will cost $35,000 to fix my mouth. Not feasible. I'm paying for the children's oral health care and orthodantia right now. I wish anyone would have taken care of my teeth when I was young.
(crying) Now...at 35...I'm going to have to have all my teeth pulled and get dentures. So please...please do take him.
