Cats Litter Box

I'm looking for recommendations of a good litter box for 2 cats. We've had cats for many years and I love our cats, but am tired of cleaning a litter box so often. We have the standard type with a lid on it. We use standard litter as I don't like to have to scoop. After a couple of days the litter box smells and the cats continually track litter all over the floor. A friend recently bought the automatic Litter Maid Elite, for $150. I don't mind paying that much (but not much more) if something really works well, however, online, there were many, many negative comments about that litter box - motor quit working after short time, litter stuck to blades, etc. I found NO positive remarks about it. I would really like an automatic or semi-automatic one, and am not opposed to using the clumpable litter, however, I don't want to have to physically scoop the poop. No pun intended. :)

What can I do next?

There is this kind I have and I got it at walmart, I have also seen it at Petsmart. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=27544... You just roll it, and roll it back over then pull the drawer out and dump it in the trash. You have to use clumping litter but no scooping necessary. You will have to completely change the litter over sometimes, the screens will miss small pieces. I would love an automatic on too, but this isn't much work, and no motors or anything to break.

The automatic ones do tend to have issues. I haven't found a single person who was happy with them in the long run. I actually foster cats and kittens for a local rescue group in addition to having 2 of my own. I've had as many as 7 cats/kittens in the house at one time so I consider myself a bit of a litter box expert.

Get several litter boxes. I have 3 in use at all times. Instead of using a conventional litter box I use an under the bed storage bin without the lid. They are deep and have higher sides. Because I usually have kittens around I can't use the clumping litter (which gets like cement between their little toes) so I scoop every day. The key is to have everything you need by each litter box so it's a 2 minute job.

I keep a litter scooper, a roll of dog poop bags, and a dust pan and brush in a small trash can next to each box. That way I can scoop the waste into a bag and use the dust pan and brush to sweep up any stray litter dumping it back into the container. Very easy and very fast.

I have three cats and I use two big boxes (without lids) and I change them twice a week. I have heard the littermaid isn't worth the $$. One tip though: if you feed your cats a high-quality high-protein food (like Iams, Hills, Science diet -- ask your vet for a recommendation) they will poop less. Because they won't have to eat as much to be full.

I wanted to get one awhile ago and did a bunch of research. The one I came up with was this... http://www.petco.com/product/100502/PetSafe-Simply-Clean-...

Also, check out craigslist as there are quite a few on there for cheap.

So we just bought a motorized box and every now and then I do have to scoop something, but it is tiny and not every day. I ended up getting the "simply clean" box because it is in the bathroom attached to our room and I wanted something quiet. It seemed like the older littermate got much better reviews than the elite one and both are available on amazon (the cheaper one is better). So basically here is my view - all those reviews online expected a perfect product in which they would never have to clean it, never have to have any contact with poop. You will never find a litter pan like it and if want to have cats, you have to live with that. Its a machine and machines need maintenance. However if you think about these litter pans as a service, its kind of ok if they only last a year. I told my husband I wasn't sure about buying one because the reviews said they only lasted 6 months to a year before breaking and sometimes you still had to scoop - his response "I'd totally pay $3-6 per month not to have to scoop the pan every day". Oh and the self cleaning Omega pan freaks me out because as people pointed out you are rolling the gross litter around the side and ceiling of the box - the cat will then rub against those surfaces -ewwww. And just so you know if you are used to a closed box you will find that there is a lot more smell right away after the cats poop because both boxes didn't have lids.

I had my litter maid for 5 years before it broke down and bought a new one that had the motor go out. The company was very responsive in sending me a replacement (which broke and then they sent me an additional one). The secret is to know where the reset button is. If I would have been able to find the reset button on my other ones I probably wouldn't have had to get a different one. It is important to do a weekly cleaning of the scooping rake and the sides and at least twice a year totally empty and spray down to keep it in good working order. There are others such as the Scoop Free ($129) that has gotten good reviews and if I had a cat today (had to put mine down almost 2 years ago - she was 15) I would look at it. We have two boxes for two cats. Neither has a lid. I switched to the "crystal" litter and it's been the best thing ever. Yes, it's pricier, but I change it, and clean the box, once per month and it doesn't stink!! I scoop poops out daily, but the litter covers the urine oder like nothing else I've tried.
I use both the Tidy Cat crystals (they're big crystals, doesn't track) and Dr. Elsey's senior cat litter (more like sand, tracks a little). GL!!

We've had a Litter Maid for our two cats for at least 5 years now. It's the LitterMaid Plus version. Don't know if they still make that extact one or not. We're still on our first one. It does not completely ellimate you needing to clean the litter box, but we only have to clean it about twice a week... once midweek to clear out the waste container and add a little litter and garbage day we do a more thorough cleaning.

Don't just use the plastic boxes that come with it for the litter container. We put a plastic garbage bag in the plastic box and then swap those out. Over time the plastic boxes eventually break and you still need to replace them, but I think we've only ever needed to buy one package in all the time we've owned it.

Yes, it's still a litter box. Some residue will stick to the blades and the very bottom of the pan. But it's not a daily chore anymore. Ours is in a spare room, so the little bit of litter outside the box doesn't matter and we just peridocially vacuum. But otherwise, unless they've just used the box, I don't really notice the smell. (Or if we've skipped the midweek cleaning and the box is full enough the cover doesn't close, you can smell it a little.) I know when we bought ours, they did have a little tent cover that you could get to contain the litter, don't know if they still have one.

With two cats, we do still have a second basic litter box with a cover, but they hardly use it, mainly use the LitterMaid.

We've generally been using the ScoopAway multiple cat formula litter and have had good luck.

I am going to sound like a nut, but I did potty train my cat........it was kinda gross and messy at first bc you have to have this mini litter box thing on your seat so it is not for everyone but well worth it in the end.. If you have one bathroom it kinds sucks bc you have to share it wiht the kit until your cat is done, so it would be great if you had two, I did not. Oh and the mistake I made was rushing my cat you do have to go slow w/ each step or they wont complete the process. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3...
I used the first kit and once you cut out the holes you cant go back so if you rushed your cat you have no way to go back. the second kit is what I would recommend, wish they had it when I tried.
good luck I hate cat litter too!

I hate to tell you, but with 2 cats there will be lots of scooping. A healthy cat is very efficient.. so two will produce a lot of waste on a daily basis..

I cat sit for many people.. A few of them have had the Litter Maid and all of them ended up trashing them.. They are a pain and sometimes can make for of a bigger mess than a regular cat box...

The best thing I have seen was the covered litter box on an extra long mat that is easy to vacuum. This client keeps a hand vac plugged in right next to it.. This seems to allow the cats enough walking area to capture most of the litter from their paws.

She uses a metal long handled slotted spoon (almost flat) to scoop the dirty litter with. In the litter bag she keeps a wonderful plastic scooper so that she does not have to pour from the bag or bucket. She also keeps plastic grocery bags close by, so she can scoop into it and take it to the outside trash can...

She also keeps a Vanilla candle in that area and burns it when necessary...

Her family has a schedule so that there are certain days for each member to care for the pets.. They also have a huge dog, bird and fish....
