We are planning on taking our son on a train ride to Chicago for his third birthday.

What do you do about carseats in cabs?

What can I do next?

Depending on his size, I would at least get a booster seat to be used. Safety first.

I know this isn't the best solution, but I would just make sure he is in the middle of the back seat of the cab and buckle him in. We never took car seats for short cab rides in Chicago. You can't really use car seats or booster seats in most cabs because they don't have shoulder/lap belts in the back, just lap belts.

I took one of the small booster seats with us. It's not really the right seat, but it's much more mobile than dragging the full blown carseat around. My thought was it was better than nothing.

Bring your car seat or rent one. Seriously! A child that is not properly secured in a child restraint can be seriously injured or killed in a minor accident. Would you put him in your own car unrestrained for just a short ride to the corner store? I would not! And I would not put my child in a cab without a proper restraint.
Just imagine how you would live with yourself if something happened to him.... it's a high price you may pay to avoid a little inconvenience.
Good luck!

BTW we have taken a bunch of cabs to and from the airport, most have LATCH nowadays and you can secure a convertible seat ith just a lapbelt if needed. Bring along the instructions or practice in your own car.

Call the cab companies and ask if they have cabs that have car seats in them, I can't imagine you are the first traveler not having a car seat with them. Some of the taxi vans have integrated car seats that just fold down. It's a 5 point harness and they work very well.

When I called and asked they said, they can not drive us. I would call to see what the cab companies you would be taking have to say.
