We have a puppy who has been great with accidents in the house, but recently went on the carpet. Any suggestions for an outside carpet cleaning service or a machine we can buy to do it ourselves?

Bissell Green Clean Machine is great for spot-cleaning. We have had cats for over 20 years, and I have lost track of how many green clean machines we have gone through. (I think it was 3 machines, so 7 years each.) It is important to clean it out after you use it, though, or it will get smelly.

Kids and pets works great!

If you want to invest the money, the spot bot works great. I think its by bissell.
You just set it over the stain and it is gone.
Its a small machine, great for stairs and stains.
What ever you do don't use hot water on pee stains. It sets the smell. Thats where the kids and pets comes in. It works great on smell.
Good Luck!

Sadly I have a lot of experience with pet stains. You want to make sure you stay away from a wet process (aka Stanley Steamer) unless it's specifically for pets. The water based cleaners actaully reactivate the urine crystals that are forever trapped in your carpet, thus making it more inticing for your pet to re-mark there. We used D&C Chem Dry--they have a special treatment for pet stains and were so helpful and sweet (including working AROUND my napping baby's schedule!). Colette was also really fair in terms of pricing since we had a very small area that was affected. Additionally, because it's a dry treatment (aside from the pet area), if you're having other carpets treated they'll be practially dry when it's done, which is nice.

This is their website:

Good luck!

I use a great product that I get online and it works better than any other product or machine I've used in the past. The products they have are safe for my family and pets so I'm not worried about the harmful toxins they could be exposed to. I would love to share the information with you. They offer so many other products that can make your home healthier. Email me directly if you would like to chat. My email address is ____@____.com - Talk to you soon :)

I bought the little bissel green machine. LOVE IT! works well. This way you will have it for other times you need to clean. I personally would not get a professional for one spot......good luck!

We have the Bissel carpet machine from Bed Bath and Beyond. Works very well and we use it all the time for dog issues and anything else that gets on the carpet. It was around 150-$200, i think, but worth it. BTW, you dont have to buy the special soap to go in it, we use Tide or any other liquid laundry detergent. Just dont put too much in.

We also have a puppy whose six months old now. We invested in a Kirby and use the dry foam attachment all the time. Our carpet would be black without it. We used to rent Rug Doctors 2-3 times a year, but sadly now that's not often enough. We shampoo the carpet at least six times a year now. My dog manages to find dirt/mud nearly every time we let him out to do his business.
We love our Kirby and would buy it again in a heartbeat. The Hoover Carpet Cleaners don't work.
Good Luck.

I don't have any, but please be aware of dangerous chemicals. If you watched the interview with John Travolta, they are convinced his sons disease was related to the chemicals in the carpets they had just had cleaned. I don't know anymore details, but just be careful. I have become very intune with chemicals in our house since my husband was sick we try not to bring them in our house, or use them to clean or on our bodies. good luck

Hi M.,
I would rent a carpet cleaning machine from Home Depot. It's very cost efficient and they even teach you how to use it. We rented one last August and my husband got the whole house done in no time! You'll be impressed by what comes out of your carpet...

Hi M.,

Why pay for a service to do it or buy a machine? You can rent carpet shampooers at almost any grocery store for about $50, surely less than your other two options. Home Depot may rent them too.

Hope this helps!

If you can touch base with a Kirby rep they come to your house and do 1-2 rooms to demo the vacuum/carpet cleaner. Then you can choose to buy or not. We did end up buying the vacuum and I am very happy with it. Its a Vacuum adn then you can just change the part to make it a dry foam cleaner. Its really nice and convenient!! However finding the time to Actually clean the carpets is still difficult!!!
I purchased a $400 steam cleaner, Bissel from Home Depot before the Kirby and it was ok but it got real gross real fast! I don't recommend it!! Call for the demo..l then youc an at least get your carpet done once for free! ;0)

This kind of stain needs the right PH to clean it. I use Claesson Carpet Cleaners. Matt, the owner, is wonderful. I've used him for years and have NO complaints. He can explain it all to you and give suggestions for cleaning, along w/ your free bottle of cleaning solution!

Your do it yourself machines are great for spotting, but you have to remember that you are indeed leaving a lot of residue(saop) on the floor. This is why you are consistantly cleaning thoses high traffic areas. For spills it is best not to scrub. You want to flush these spots so you can get the spot out of th padding. Pour water on area, step on towel, repeat a couple of times. After flushing then blot the spot with mild spotter pref. not spot shot. These bleach your carpets if not rinsed thoroughly. If done right your hair won;t go grey form reapearing spots. Good Luck Also you should have your carpet professional steamed cleaned at least once a year. No store bought machine has the power to steam and extract like a pros.

I CAN tell you that the best and easiest solution for accidents on carpet is a product called Kids N Pets. You can get it at certain Target stores. You saturate the area with it and when it dries, no smell! That should help in the mean time...

We have a 12 month old, a yellow lab and 2 cats - so I know a thing or two about stains.

I completely recommend the Hoover Steamvac. We had a spotbot, but it tended to only smear the stain into a circle. Then we bought the Steamvac a few months ago and the carpets look fantastic. It's super easy to use, and the carpets dry quickly. If you don't have wood floors, spend the extra $8 to buy the hard floor adaptor. Now I can use the same machine to wash the floors and the carpets.

The advantage of that over a service for the same price you still have it. The other day my daughter spilled a whole glass of cola on my light carpet and I just grabbed my steamvac and sucked it up. Then 2 cleaning passes and you can't even tell there was anything there.
