I wouldn't do it before baby is crawling after reading about John Travolta's son and the carpet cleaning chemicals. I guess some of the mental problems he had were traced back to the Travolta's cleaning the carpets too frequently when their son was little and crawling. Just think, those chemicals are laid on and then dry on and then your little one will have his face right there and his hands there too - even after they dry, the chemicals will still be there. Any germs from previous families will be gone after a month, so I would just vacuum the carpets well. Anyways those germs are probably a lot safer for your baby then the chemicals they use in carpet cleaners - whether your hire professionals or rent a machine.

You can do it yourself...it isn't much more complicated than renting a machine at Home Depot, mixing solution with water and "vacuuming" over an area a couple times.

Otherwise, if you want to call someone it generally costs between 50-125 per room...though sometimes they have deal where you can get a whole house for $100+ depending on who you call.

It doesn't generally take a long time to dry...unless you use a machine that leaves a ton of water, and doesn't suck it up.

You do not have to be out of the house...you just will want to stay off the carpet until dry (or you can put newspapers down to walk on)...and/or it might smell depending on age of carpet and what is underneath.

Chemicals are fine as long as the carpet is dry...and you can shop around for different options. I personally would rather spend the $150 and buy myself a home unit I can use whenever needed...but that's just M..

We had Zero Rez come out and they do 3 rooms for $150 right now. They get rave reviews - however we were underwhelmed. They were clean, but when I ran my home carpet cleaner over the traffic area, I got a VERY dirty bucket of dirt.

You can rent a Rug Doctor from Home Depot or Cub for about $25 plus cleaner. Look online for homemade solutions too. I often use Simple Green and a couple drops of Dawn. (which ran circles around the Zero Rez on my carpet.)

We also bought a $200 carpet cleaner from Target. It has a smaller tank than the rug doctor, so you need to empty and fill it more often, but then it isn't as heavy. (always a give and take.)

My experience is that if you can do the work yourself, you'll be more careful and do a better job at less expense. However it will take more of your time and effort. Buying one means that you can clean your traffic areas more often and then it's not a big job to have clean carpets.

p.s. in winter, the humidity is low so the carpets will dry faster. Any of the ways I mentioned will be damp afterwards until they dry.

I suggest you hire certified professionals to get your carpets cleaned as they have many effective methods that can make your carpets look cleaner and healthier.

When I was a kid my younger brother had Kawasaki Disease. They have since found a correlation between the chemicals used to clean carpets and the disease. They of course won't say it causes the disease, just a correlation. I have cleaned my carpets since having children. However, I leave town with the kids for the weekend and my husband stays home. I've heard its best to keep kids off the carpet for 48 hours. We use Stanley Steamer and I think in our area it's about $110 for 2 rooms and a hallway. (I think that Travolta's son also had Kawasaki's).

I have used several ways and at one time years ago had my own machine. I now am a firm believer of steam cleaning. Not only are there no chemicals involved, because of the heat - the carpets dry much quicker! Watch your local papers and flyers and you will be able to find coupons most of the time to help with the cost.
