Caring OB That Actually Delivers Their Own Babies

Help! I'm relocating suddenly from a plan to deliver in Mountain View and would now like to deliver at Mills-Peninsula because I'll be in Burlingame instead of Palo Alto at the end of my pregnancy. I'm new to this website after being introduced to it by Kristen S and this is my first request. Any help or direction is much appreciated.

After spending much time researching and asking for referrals three months ago, I now have an OK doctor who told me at my first visit last month that she is one of 17 doctors who may be on call to deliver my baby in Mountain View. Needless to say, many women would actually like a better chance at having someone deliver their baby whom they've at least known for the duration of their pregnancies...and I"m one of them.

I haven't been able to find any referrals or questions about doctors on this site and I don't know if that is intentional or if its just my pregnancy brain, but I really need a referral to a kind hearted OB. I'm not the type that takes wells to dismissive or cold characters and have a hard time trusting doctors like that due to past experiences, so hence the focus on a warm personality.

Thank you for any names you might have, I'm having dead-ends with the few leads my doctor gave me to research because they've been given bad bed-side manner reviews by other local folks.

What can I do next?

Unfortunately I think this the way OB care is practiced now--there are no guarantees for whom will be at your birth. You could try to find a very small practice with only a few folks who would be on call for your delivery, so you'd be sure you met all of them. For the better bedside manner, this is a big generalization, but you could find a practice with lots of midwives and see only them for your prenatal visits, and then take a chance on who's going to be on call when you deliver. The other thing you might consider is hiring a doula, who would have prenatal appointments with you as well to talk about your pregnancy and provide support and warmth during the labor and delivery that you frankly probably will not get from an OB. Note that in the hospital, the OB does not stay with you for very long anyway, they come in at the very end. Up until then you are mostly with the nurses anyway, who you probably will never have met. Good luck!

Hi E.,

My ob/gyn is Dr. Henry Hamilton in San Mateo. ###-###-####) He's been my gynacologist for over 15 years and delivered my son two years ago at Mills Peninsula. Aside from occassionally being out of town, he delivers all his own babies. He came to the hospital at 1am to deliver mine by emergency C. He also helped me with my fertility issues. I had such great care while I was pregnant, was able to call with questions 24 hours a day and his staff is wonderful. Can't say enough about them. Also, I was 39 when I was pregnant, if that helps. Good luck with your move and new baby!

Hi, E.!
I am with the mom who recommended a doula. They are invaluable! They spend time with you before the birth, preparing you for what to expect, etc., I had 2-3 visits with mine before and they can take calls from you whenever you want to talk to them about anything regarding the pregnancy. Such a great support! And like that other mother, I, too, had the experience of barely seeing the person who actually "delivered" the baby. The doc came in the last minute, before the baby slipped out (head was already almost out) and she was just there to stitch me up. Most of the labor and delivery was done by a nurse who happened to be on duty. So if cannot find an OB/GYN that can guarantee to be there for your birth, don't worry too much about it. They are not there for very long at all. The first time I laid eyes on my OB that delivered was when she sat down to stitch me up!!!
