Car Headaches

Try giving them each a pair of dark sunglasses. It could be the lightness mixed with the movement of the car that is causing this type of motion sickness.

Beyond that, I don't know what else you could try except giving them some children's motrin before getting in the car, or some dramamine, if they make a children's version.

It's called sensory discrepancy.
The eyes tell you you are moving but the rest of your senses say you are standing still, it creates a blood pressure imbalance in your head. The ice cools and restricks the blood vessels going to your head and eases the blood pressure problem. This also causes extreme drowsiness. Being able to feel air moving, sipping a cold drink, chewing ice and any of the normal over the counter head ache medicines will releave the pain. It is realted to motion sickness but does not affect the inner ear.
The only reason I know is because I have the same problem and love to travel, especialy by car.

Too bad they both get headaches because I used to sit up front when I was small and that stopped it. The movement in the rear of a vehicle was terrible so I still have to sit up front. God Bless!

My daughter and I both have this problem. It is very bad if I ride in the backseat (I don't know why). I avoid reading in the car, as well as looking out the side window. I find this helps. Also, my parents traveled a lot when I was young, and I found that chewing ice helps tremendously (I don't know why this is either; it's just something I figured out when I was 8 years old). I find that playing games that encourage my child to look out the front window helps her (like the ABC game--you know, looking on the signs for the letters of the alphabet). I also do not allow her to read in the car or play video games. We just do a lot of talking (which gives just ME a headache---lol, just kidding). I hope this was somewhat helpful.

I'm not sure if they're reading anything while in the car, but it makes me get car sick when I read something while in any car.

The VOC's fuming out in the car are very concentrated and that could cause the headaches. You may like to check your kids for chemical sensitivity. There is a hospital in Austin to contact.

My son complains of the same thing, it doesn't matter what car we're in, in a matter of minutes he's complaining of a headache. He says this car is giving me a headache,I don't like this car. Come to find out he had a sinus infection, but after he's finished his medicine I thought that he would be k but he is still complaining of headaches. He is 8 & this has been going on for a fee years now. I would like to know what causes this as well

My daughter has recovered from migrains that came on at the age of 7. She is now 11 and doing well.

Please by all means try to ommit any TYLENOLS, MOTRINS, and even prescription drugs. They are so damaging to the body. Our children are worth far more than just FDA approval.

Have you had their eyes checked in a while? I experienced this when I was young, and it turned out that I needed glasses. Don't let them read in the car, that could make them sick also.

I used to get those headaches as a kid myself, and sometimes still do. I've found that having eaten recently, blowing the air conditioning in my face, and looking straight ahead and far out in the car help to lessen the occurrence and the pain of those headaches. I learned in a biology class that our eyes are relaxed when we are looking at far off things. I tried to look at the skyline or far trees when riding in the car, and the relaxing of my eyes helped my head. Hope this helps!

My husband an Father in law both get headaches in the car as well as sickness if they arent driving the car they are in or sleeping. So it sounds like that is what ur kids have! Ive never personaly experienced it but from what my husband says the headaches really hurt and it makes him feel absolutly horrible! Id suggest maybe seeing a doctor who can prescribe somthing for motion sickness or maybe buying like the motion sickness wrist bands that they can wear in the car and see if that helps them at all! Well my child is only 2, so he hasn't yet told me if he gets headaches in the car or not. But this is something I experience often, especially if I'm not driving. As, for things that help... I haven't found a cure of motion sickness yet but if you are going on a long trip ask them to take Tylenol (or other pain reliever) before you leave, for short trips I wouldn't medicate them that much unless it is going to be a day of short trips, like you all are going shopping. Also, I have noticed that it gets worse the hungrier I am, so it might help to make sure they have a snack before getting in the car (but I know some may say the exact opposite). I know that you mentioned that you don't think that it is something in you car in particular, but sometimes even the smallest oder (it may not even be offensive) can give me a headache in the car, so make sure your car is aired out and there isn't any odder at all in it. As I said I've never found anything to solve the problem but just getting out of the car, I've even had to ask my husband to pull over before just so I can get some fresh air which it seems to help.

P.s I agree with the cold bit... keeping cool or eating/ drinking something cool, when it occurs I will always tend to stop and get a large drink somewhere with lots of ice!

I have personal experience with this problem because I, like Amy B., still cannot ride in the backseat or read (not even a map!) while in a moving vehicle. Air flow helps, as does having something to snack on and something to drink. Like Amy said, don't let them read or play video games (though I'm not sure how watching a DVD would affect it), and try to keep them focused on what's through the windshield, not out the side windows. If you're going on a long trip or will be driving on particularly winding roads, Dramamine works well, but I wouldn't recommend giving it to them every time you get in the car. Instead, make sure they've had something to eat before getting in the car.

My daughter is experiencing the same this as your two children. She is 12 years old and everythime we get in the car she complains of having a headache. I know it's not just my car because she also says when she is on the school bus she has car headaches. She also told me that a little while after she gets out of the car or off the bus, she still has a headache. I don't know what to do to help her.

I have a child who gets car sick. She is 8 and weighs about 50 lbs. I talked with both her pediatrician and our pharmasist who both suggested a half a dose of non-drowsy dramamine. It works every time. No more headaches and no more vomitting. For short trips (under 1 hour) I simply give her a half dose of Children's Motrin to help prevent a slight headache that might occur. Hope this helps!

My son gets the same thing.
I took him to his Dr and she put him on medicine for it.
IT is not just simple car sickness if they get it everytime.
30 minutes before getting into the car, give them something that you would normally give them for their headaches. That way you are preventing them.

my step daughter gets those....it's worse in the heat but she gets them often.... I find it helps to have the air on high and make sure plenty is getting to the back....also (as irritating as it can be) let them crack the windows a bit.... something about the air helps relieve the headaches... if all else fails it could help to give them a dose of children's tylonol BEFORE getting in the car (especially for long trips). I am in my 50s and have the same symptoms as your children do. Every time I drive or ride in a car I get severe headaches and fatigue that lasts for a few hours or more frequently for the rest of the day after driving or riding in any car. Sometimes I get a burning sensation and pressure behind my ears along with the headaches. I have been to doctors (neurologists, etc.) and have not found one that knows what this is. I have had MRI's, bloodwork, and many other tests. It is hard for me to convince these doctors that this is not simple motion sickness. I do not get dizzy or have motion sickness symptoms except severe headaches and fatigue. I know what regular motion sickness feels like. I take clonazepam for these headaches and it helps a little bit. I read online that a woman with these same symptoms takes lorazepam for this, and that it helps. I think lorazepam and clonazepam are similiar. Both clonazepam and lorazepam have bad side effects. I have tried all of the regular motion sickness medications and none of them help at all. I hope someone knows what these 'car headaches' are and how to treat them. It's horrible to not be able to go anywhere without a severe headache.
