My son is going to be 4 in January and I would like to get him into a daycare/pre-school program after the first of the year. My mom has been watching him when needed since I worked part time and my husband was a contractor so was home a lot. He recently got an 8-5 job (YAY!) in the Belden/North Canton area...we live in Canton City and my mom lives a good 30 minutes away. I was hoping to get some suggestions on what places to check into, maybe some to avoid. I would like to find something near DH's works since we don't plan to stay in the city.
I don't even know where to begin!

Thanks!!

What can I do next?

I took my girls to Campus Preschool for 6 years, and we loved it. The directors and the staff are great. They truly became part of our family. It's inside John Knox church...right behind The Strip on Frank Avenue.

When my oldest started school, I moved them to a center in our school district. It's called All About Childrens, and it's near the new Fishers in North Canton. We love it there, too. The teachers are all certified, and their preschool program is terrific. And it's a beautiful, cheerful environment. There is another All About Childrens on Frank Ave. I've never been to that center, but it might be worth checking out. Both are owned by the same person.

Visit some centers unannounced, and ask for a tour. It's a good idea to call ahead, and see when the Director will be onsite, but don't make an appointment. Just show up.

There is a great book called "How to Find the Best Quality Childcare". It's available at Borders. It provides great advice on what to look for, and what to avoid.

My best advice to you is that you will know the right center when you see it. It will just feel comfortable. The centers I mentioned were great for our family, but your needs may be different. Spend an afternoon visiting centers, and you will be able to quickly narrow the list to just a few.

Good luck! The right preschool program will provide so many benefits for your son.

Portage Collaborative is a good idea but you can't get your child in there in the middle of the year and it's hard to get them in if they don't start from the beginning (age 3). If you are in Canton City though there is more chance because they need more kids from Canton City in general. A lot of parents from Plain, Jackson, North Canton school districts apply but not as many from Canton City and their quota for kids from Canton City is quite large. I think their application/lottery is in April.

My kids go to the Canton Jewish Community Center on Harvard right off 30th. They have a great preschool program (age 4 is 9-12) and they have a day care program as well so you can really build your own hours as you need them.

I did a lot of research since we just moved to Canton but didn't find many part-time preschools around. There is another in North Canton at a church just across from the Y, but I forgot the church's name. It's North Canton Preschool, I think. I visited there and liked it OK.

WHEN I LIVED UP THAT WAY MY SON WENT TO PORTAGE COLEBORATIVE MONTESSORI SCHOOL. IF YOU QUALIFY JOBS WILL PAY FOR IT AND IT IS A WONDERFUL PROGRAM. IT IS BEHIND THE NORTH CANTON LIBRARY. IT IS ONLY HALF DAY BUT THERE IS A DAYCARE NEXT DOOR THAT THE CHILDREN CANGO TO BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL. IT HAAS CLASSES FROM PRE-K TO 8TH GRADE AND ONCE THEY HIT K IT IS FREE. SO ALL THE KIDS CAN GO. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GREAT SCHOOL AND A GREAT EDUCATION FOR YOUR CHILDREN THAT IS THE PLACE TO GO.

I second the portage collaborative which is by the YMCA daycare. For a Child on North Main is a highly recommended center also..
