Can't Seem to Get Pregnant - Leander,TX

Does anyone have any information on fertility testing? My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for 1 1/2 years now and have not been able to conceive. It is really frustrating to see everyone else around you with happy families, or pregnant and you can't seem to get pregnant. I just thought it would be easier I guess. Anyway, I just don't know anything about the testing. Is it expensive, does insurance cover it?

I know that everyone says that it will happen when you stop trying. I guess those people don't know how hard that is to do.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for all the encouragment and advice. It does make me feel better to hear from all of you and know that I am not alone. I have an appointment for an annual pap with my obgyn on the 13th. I plan to take all of your advise and ask her what my next step should be. I know that my husband and I will be amazing parents, we just need God to bless us with the opportunity.

Have you tried the clearplan fertility monitor or are you way past that step? It worked for us helping to target the most fertile days of my cycle. We had tried for about 10 months when I bought it and conceived in the 2nd month. Good Luck.

There is a really good fertility specialist here named Sandra Bello. She was great. My husband and I tried to get pg on our own for 3 yrs and then we went to her. We only tried for 2 months, then we were blessed through adoption. I know how you feel about being frustrated.

I am not sure how old you are but usually the doctors recommend getting some testing done after a year of trying to conceive. I have been doing ivf for 4 years now. It is very expensive and very exhausting. Houston IVF is a wonderful place. Look them up on the internet- doctors Timothy Hickman and Laura McKenzie.

My husband and I tried for over a year to get pregnant with my first child as well and Clomid worked for us. My hubby was never tested.....it was determined that I was not ovulating (and if I was, it wasn't predictable). Start with your OB/GYN if you haven't already and then contact your insurance to find out what is covered. It's different for every policy, so you will want to know since it can get quite expensive for some things. The Clomid was cheap and it worked for us the first month on the lowest dose, so I was glad to have had an easy fix, but I have several friends that have been through IVF, so I know what it's like to go down that road too.

When my husband and I decided to start trying to get pregnant with #2 this summer, we assumed I would have to get back on Clomid, but lo and behold, I got pregnant the first month while on vacation in Ireland. I ovulated very early in my cycle, so I was shocked when I found out I was actually pregnant, but just so you know....just because you have to use Clomid once doesn't mean you will definitely have to again if you decide you want another child.

It can be a long, frustrating road and I wasn't very good at relaxing through it, so all I can say is to take a deep breath and try not to obsess about it like I did! I will say a little prayer for you. Best of luck!

C., hi,
I'm afraid I can't give advice concerning the US (we just moved here) but I did go thru fertility testing and treatment. I now have 2 beautiful children! It can take time and money, but it's worth it. I was "old" (38 for the first child, 41 for the second), but I still beat the odds (statisticaly, it is harder after 35 and many clinics wouldn't consider me after 40).
From my experience, the first "testing" you might want to try and that is not expensive, is to establish your temperature pattern. You have to take your temperature every day before you get out of bed every morning, for 2 months. This will help your doctor see your pattern.
Then we did hormone testing for both of us. These are blood tests on particular days of the cycle. I'm sure there are web sites with information.
I agree with you, when people give you advice, you have to filter. When you desire a pregnancy that doesn't come easily, you can't just turn your brain off. Try not to let the stress get you down!

I go to a fertility specialist in San Antonio, Fertility Center of San Antonio, Dr. Gregory Neal###-###-#### or 1-800-708-1869). Everyone has different problems but it would not be a bad idea to have yourself and your husband checked out. That's the first step. Both my husband and I really love them and we have a 2 year old and another one on the way thanks to them.
Good luck!

Im sorry. It took us over a year to get pregnant with our first, so I know how you feel and Im sorry!

I have recently had trouble with my hormones being out of balance (same problem I had when trying to get pregnant the first time). Pregnancy balanced everything out and I got pregnant immediately with my 2nd, but that pregnanacy threw everything out of wack again. Someone on this post recommended Dr. Weine in Austin. Here is her web-site. http://www.drteneshaweine.com/ She might be able to get to the cause. Also, talk to your OB...they will generally test your husband first, since it is easier and cheaper to start with him and insurance will cover generally.

Good Luck!

I know exactly what you are going through. It depends on your insurance. If you have regular periods then you need to see a fertility specialist. But if you have irregular periods then you can start out and see an endocrinologist. I tried for 8 years so it is best to start working on it now. In 2005 I had my terrific son!!!!

We dealt with fertility issues as well. Under our insurance plan, testing to determine the cause was covered, fertility treatments were not covered. You need to check with your insurance company to know the details of your policy. It can get very expensive. The treatments can be as inexpensive as a few hundred dollars a month (for Clomid and a few ultrasounds) up to tens of thousands of dollars per cycle (IVF and so on).

My biggest recommendation, check your policy to see what's covered. Then, before you start even a single thing, talk with your husband about the limits you are setting. How far are you willing to go? What procedures are you willing to do and how much money are you willing to spend. This is so much easier to do now than when you are in the midst of the procedures and the money is flowing out and the emotions are in full swing. This is what we did and we are so glad for it.

Then, find a quality doctor. Don't waste your time with an OB if your policy covers testing. Go to the Plano/Dallas area and find a high quality reproductive endocrinologist (fertility doctor). We had an incredible one that was kind, compassionate, listened to us, cared about our thoughts and feelings and is known as the second best in the state (he went to med school with the first best in the state, but that guy wasn't on our insurance).

No, it doesn't always happen. Many times couples need help. I don't know what city you live in but I would go to a fertility specialist. (please make sure you go to someone very qualified with much experience not just an OB.)Make sure the doctor deals only in fertility. If he delivers babies too, move on to someone who only deals in fertility issues. It can be something as simple as your thyroid being off. Go get tested. And...unfortunately depending on what you need insurance does not cover everything. Good luck.

Hi there C.

I can empathize with you. I tried for a year with treatment before conceiving naturally. I had a great doc. Dr. Robert McWilliams. Typically insurance with cover the cost of diagnosis of infertility. Some insurance covers treat of infertility if you are lucky. If you have not been diagnosed as infertile yet, you are in luck and can see someone who will try different treatment protocols on you to determine what you need to do.

The sooner you start, the sooner you will have your bundle of joy. Also, during the infertility treatment, I found the site www.resolve.org very helpful. It is a site dedicated to women undergoing infertility treatment. There is lots of helpful info there and lots of suppor. It can be very emotional.

Good luck.

I know you say those people don't know how hard it is to stop trying BUT...I am one of those people that did and got pregnant.

It was very frustrating for us because we had one child that we got pregnant with before being married. So here we are, married, everything going well and 4 years of trying and only a miscarriage to show for it. I do blame my problems on the depo shot I took very shortly after having my first son. The one month we stopped trying and just gave up, we got pregnant. The stress can cause problems.

Since you guys have never conceived, it wouldn't hurt to get your fertility health checked out. It also documents how long you have been trying for insurance purposes as well. Sometimes, you walk in and say you have been trying but the insurance can hold out on you to try other methods because to them you haven't been trying long enough. (like weightloss- you may have dieted all your life, but insurance will make you diet again before allowing surgery). I can't say this from experience as far as fertility goes, but going to the doctor can document it for you.

I am sure you will find more answers from here than I can offer, but I wanted to assure you those people telling you to stop trying aren't just saying it out of jest...my second child is proof it works. :)

Good luck to you!

Make an appointment with your regular OB/GYN to voice your concerns. You may be surprised with what your he/she can do for you. Also, typically it is required to have to have a referral from your doctor in order to see a fertility specialist. Insurance coverage varies greatly with fertility specialist depending on your specific plan and can be costly.

My husband and I delayed going in to a doctor because we had the same questions. But now most insurance policies will cover the basic tests for both of you, as well as some of the basic procedures to evaluate or correct conditions such as endometriosis (via laparoscopy).

The kind of specialist you'll want to see is a reproductive endocrinologist. You can use the web or your ob-gyn to narrow the list of who to see. There is often a wait of 6 weeks to get in to see someone.

In the meantime, you can use an ovulation test kit (available next to the pregnancy test kits in the store) to see if you are ovulating. Another method is basal temperature reading, but I found that impractical. The more data you have (how long your menstrual cycles are, whether you are ovulating, etc.), the faster they can help you by ruling out certain things. If you don't already have that information, start tracking it now.

In our case, our policy covered office visits, ultrasound scans, a surgery, plus some medication. They would not cover IVF (which can get very pricey), but we didn't end up needing it. I got pregnant within a year of seeing the doctor, and now have a lovely girl almost two. I am now starting it all over again, though, trying for #2.

Folks who haven't been through infertility, or don't know someone well who has, can be unintentionally cruel. It's hard, but you have to learn to do what's best for you. For a while I had to avoid baby showers, for example, but sent gifts with friends. Now I'm find going to them, even though I'm struggling with infertility again.

When folks meeting us asked if we had kids, I finally learned to say "Not yet." That usually got across that we wanted them, and most didn't question too much after that. It also expressed my desire to have children, somehow, someway, even if it was via adoption.

Best of luck to you!

Hi C. -

You should definately go get tested as well as your husband. Most insurances will cover the cost for both of you. You can start with your OBY or go straight to a Fertility Doctor (that would be my recommendation). If you are in Austin the Texas Fertility Center (Dr. Kaylin Silverberg - male) is GREAT! Your husband can go there as well for testing.

GOOD LUCK! Parenting is a hard job, but well worth it! :-)

It took 2.5 years to have our 4 month old. I understand your frustration. We went through all the testing and a few rounds of Clomid. Talk to your gynecologist and get a referral to a fertility doctor (the fertility dr does clomid so different than your regular gyn will). Our insurance covered most of the testing, but not the treatments. I recommend you have your husband tested first. Make sure it is a reputable lab, though. My husband was told he was fine when we tested though our doctor's office, but when we had him tested at the fertility clinic he had a low count. Since he had been previously told he was fine, I went through a lot of tests that would have been unneccessary had we known. A urologist performed an outpatient vascular surgery and I was pregnant within 5 months. If you are in the Houston area, I recommend Dr. Sonja Kristiansen with the Houston Infertility Clinic. They will do a consultation and then call your insurance company and find out exactly what is covered. Your husband's test will not be covered and will cost $150.00 but it is so worth it! Most of your tests will be covered and within a couple of months you will have a good idea of where you stand. Oh, and start charting your basal body temperature to find out when you are ovulating as soon as you start your next cycle. Your gyn can tell you how. Check out Fertility Friend Online to help and get you started. Good luck!!

I am so sorry to hear of your troubles. I became pregnant with my first son the first month after getting off of The tPill (after 17 yrs on it) but have been trying for almost two years now for baby #2.

Have you tried charting your cycle? I used the method in the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" for our first child but have been lax about using it this time. I currently live in Sweden and travel a lot so taking my temps is tough. But if you can, this is a great way to test a few things on your own. You can learn more about charting and use a free chart online at www.fertilityfriend.com. It is really easy.

I saw Dr. Ortique, OB/GYN in Austin during my last trip home(Austin Diagnostic Clinic) and took the few charts I did have. We realized my luteal phase is too short and thus I am losing pregnancies very early on. (I also had a miscarriage in July here in Sweden at 10 weeks and another at 6 weeks last month). I am now taking prometrium to help my hormone levels in the hopes that I can sustain a pregnancy again.

I would highly recommend looking into charting your cycles as well as seeing your OB as soon as possible. I agree with others, most doctors recommend a visit after one year of trying. Even less if you are over 35 (as I am now).

Best of luck to you!
